UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JEFFERSON D. METOALFE, OF DARRINGTOM MISSISSIPPI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE W. MATHIS, OF DARRINGTON, MISSISSIPPI.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 4, 1906.
Application filed September 3, 1904. Serial No. 223,221.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JEFFERSON D. MET- OALFE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Darrington, in the county of Wilkinson and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements in l/Vinding- Levers for Motor-Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to improvementsin winding-levers for motor-vehicles; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter de scribed, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a motor-vehicle, partly in section and showing the winding-lever in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the lever, its support, the shaft, and the ratchet.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the body of the motor-vehicle, which is hollow, as shown, and provided with a front axle 2 and a rear axle 3, carrying transportingwheels 4. Extending transversely of the body 1 immediately beneath the front seat 9 is a rotating power-shaft 10. This shaft 10 has one end projecting beyond the body of the vehicle and has mounted loosely thereon for oscillation an upright support 14, provided at its lower end with spaced-apart collars 15, which encircle and rotate on the end of the shaft 10. At the upper end of the support is provided a slot 14. Alever 16 is provided with an angular bend 16 at its lower end, which is constructed to provide a longitudinal slot 14 therein and a right-angular dog 17 thereon, said lever being also provided with an extension to form a bearing 17, ivhich extends outwardly from one side of the ever.
Between the collars on the end of the shaft is a fixed ratchet 18, which serves to contact with the dog when the lever is operated. The slot 14 at the upper end of the support is arranged between the lever and its bearing, and a pin 14 passes through the slot and is secured to the lever and its hearing. A slide 14 on the support serves to have vertical movement in the slot 14 of the lever.
Having described my invention, what I claim is A winding-lever for spring-motors comprising the lever havin an angular bend at its lower end to provi e a longitudinal slot and a right-angular dog, said lever being also provided with a bearing which extends outwardly from one side thereof, a rotatable shaft provided on one end with a fixed ratchet, a support having collars at its lower end which are movably mounted on the shaft at opposite sides of said ratchet, a slide on the support serving to have vertical movement in the longitudinal slot, the upper end of the sup ort having a vertical slot therein, said end eing arranged between the lever and its bearing, and a pin passing through the slot and secured to the lever and its bearing, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JEFFERSON D. METOALFE.
