CONDENSER FOR CARDlNG-ENGINES.
T0 (1, whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EUGENE BERGER, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing in Evelon, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Condensers for Carding-Niachines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to condensers for carding-machines, and has for its object the provision of a device which will obviate the use of the usual rotary rubbers or buffs, which have the disadvantage of quickly wearing out and of being expensive, and to provide a condenser which not only serves to condense or twist the wool slivers, but at the same time to feed the same.
The invention also aims to provide a condenser by means of which a twisting action is imparted to the sliver passing through the same, so that said sliver will be condensed and possessed of necessary cohesion; and with these and other advantages in view the invention consists in the novel features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described, and finally pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a general diagrammatic view showing the relative position of the condensing device and the carding-machine, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the condenser.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout both views.
Referring to the drawings, 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 indicate the feed-rollers of the preparingmachine or finishing-head. The wool slivers after passing through these rollers are submitted to the action of a rotary co1nb5 and pass out between the drawing-roll 6 and the presser-roll 7. These slivers are then guided in channels 8 and 9 of a number corresponding to the number of slivers and after passing through the said channels reach the condensing device. This device consists, essentially, of two disks a b, which are adapted to rotate on a shaft 0, the faces of said disks being approximately parallel to' each other and said disks being longitudinally displaceable along the shaft 0. Arranged in proximity to the outer face of each disk is a collar or similar device fixed to the shaft 0, and oppositely-acting helical springs a b are interposed between these collars and the disks in such a manner as to cause said disks to be forced toward each other. A second independent shaft 6 18 disposed parallel to the shaft 0, and mounted rigidly upon same is a disk (Z, similar to the disks a b, said shaft 6 being arranged at such a distance from the shaft 0 that the disk (Z is disposed partially between the disks a and b in the manner shown. The wool slivers pass between either face of the disk d and the adjacent faces of the disks a and b. In order to impart a twisting action to the slivers, the shafts c c are caused to rostate in opposite directions, so that while a pressure is exerted in one direction upon one side of the sliver a pressure in the opposite direction is exerted in the opposite side of the same, so that the twisting of the sliver 1s effected and the same condensed to the desired degree, depending upon the adjustment of the springs. Owing to the rotary motion of the disks in opposite directions, it is also obvious that a feeding motion is imparted to the slivers, so that the slivers can be passed thence to the bobbins upon which they are to be wound. In order to permit of the introduction of the slivers between the disks 0 and (Z and (Z and I), the disks a and b are controlled by forks f g, by means of which they may be shifted along the shaft 0 and separated to the desired degree.
By my invention a condenser is provided which not only exerts an eflective twisting 0r condensing action upon the slivers, but at the same time effects the feeding of the same so that they may be readily Wound upon the usual bobbins. The device may be readily adjusted so as to be used upon wool slivers of different quality and of different size. The improved condenser also has the advantage of simplicity of construction and in practice is found to be more durable and economical than the rotary rubbers or buffs which have heretofore been used for effecting the condensing operation.
