Description
MONROE KOHN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FORTUNE-TELLING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 4, 1906.
Application filed April 28,1904. Serial No. 205.324.
To (1f/ZZ whom 'lit may concern,.-
Be it known that I, MONROE Koi-IN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, NArate of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fortune-Telling Devices and I declare the following vto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates in general to amusement apparatus, and more particularly to a combined game and fortune-telling device.
One of the most efiicient forms of advertising consists in inscribing the advertisement upon an article possessing attractiveness or affording' amusement sufficient to insi'ire its being kept by the person to whom given.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a device upon which an advertisement may be placed and which though simple in construction and inexpensive in manufacture is capable of affording amusement and entertainment, so that it will be retained by any one into whose hands it may fall, thereby constituting an efficient advertisemedium.
' A further object of my invention is to provide game device adapted for playing games of chance or for telling fortunes.
My invention, generally described, consists in a casing having a transparent top and within which is located a dial having spaces marked thereon containing inscriptions and numerals, a movable object supported upon the dial and adaptedto rest upon any one of the spaces thereon, and means for spacing the top of the casing apart from the dial to form a raceway for the movable object.
My invention will be more fully described hereinafter with reference to the accompanydrawings, in which the same is illustrated as embodied in a convenient and practical form, and in which- Figure l is a plan view, and Fig. 2 a sectional view, on line 2 2, Fig. 1.
The same reference characters are used to designate the same parts in the two figures of the drawings.
A indicates a disk forming the bottom of a casing and which may conveniently consist in a mirror. Supported upon the base A is a dial B, formed of paper, celluloid, or other suitable material, the surface of which is divided into spaces by radial lines, as clearly shown in Fig. l.
C designates the top of the casing, which is made of a transparent material, such as glass. Interposed between the outer peripheries of the bottom B and top C is a ring E, which serves to space the bottom and top apart.
D indicates a frame of any suitable material surrounding the peripheries of the top and bottom of the casing and inclosing the ring E. Inwardly-projecting 'flanges d and d2 are provided on the frame D, which extend over the top and bottom of the casing, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
Located concentrically within the casing and secured to the dial B is a disk F, upon which may be inscribed an advertisement. The disk F cooperates with they ring E in spacing the top and bottom of the casing apart. Between the ring E and disk F is formed a raceway, within which is adapted to roll a ball G, which may conveniently consist in a shot. Surrounding the disk F a circle is described upon the dial, which forms spaces between the radial lines, within which are placed numerals. Between the radial lines on the dial are placed various inscriptions, such as phrases commonly used in telling fortunes.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The casing is so moved as to causel the ball G to travel over the surface of the dial, 7 and when it comes to rest upon one of the spaces between the adjacent radial lines the inscription upon such face is the fortune indicated.
The device may also be used for playing games, the players taking turns in causing the ball to travel over the dial and scoring whatever number is inscribed within the circle around the disk and between the radial lines forming the space upon which the ball comes to rest.
From the foregoing description it will be observed that I have invented an improved device which is capable of affording entertainment and amusement and which is there- IOO fore well adapted for use as an advertise- IIO or render expedient, without departing from the spirit of my invention. y
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a casing, of a transparent top for the casing, a dial located within the casing and having spaces formed thereon by radial lines, said spaces containing inscriptions, a ball within the casing adapted to move over the dial, a disk located concentricallv upon the dial, a ring surrounding the dial, the'disk and ring being interposed between the top and bottom of the casing thereby forming a raceway for the ball.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a casing, of a transparent top for the casing, a dial supported upon the bottom of the casing and having radial lines forming spaces upon which inscriptions are placed, a ring surrounding the dial, a disk located concentrically upon the dial, the ring and disk being interposed between the top and bottom of the casing thereby forming a raceway, a ball located within the casing and adapted to travel in the'raceway, and a frame surrounding said ring and having inturned ilanges extending around the top and bottom of the casing.
3. In a fortune-telling device, the combination with a circular supporting-base, of a movable ball, a disk located concentrically upon said base forming the inner wall of a MONROE KOHN. Witnesses GEO. L. WILKINSON, CLARA C. CUNNINGHAM.
