To a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM OWEAVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabethville, in the county of Dauphinand State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints, of which the following is a specification.
This invention embodies novel improvements Ain rail-joints; and the essential features of the invention are comprised mainly in the special means provided to secure an eX-` tended bearing at the point of jointure of the rails, obviating the usual rounding of the ends of these parts and the noise and vibration incident to the passage of the wheels of the rolling-stock thereover and special means being provided for attaching the rail ends together and obviating the necessity of use of bolts and nuts and giving rise to other advantages of importance.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a rail-joint embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken through one of the transverse members securing the rails to the rail-chair. Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken through the ,double catch provided to engage the camlever.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
In carrying out the invention it is designed that the rails 1 shall be of substantially the same form as is most commonly in use at the present time-namely, T shapethe webs and bases of the rail ends being cut square and abutting against each other in the usual manner, while the heads are scarfed at the ends or cut away on a diagonal line, as shown at 2, in order that they will overlap and form a continuous bearing for the wheels of the rolling-stock to prevent the noise and vibration incident to the rounding-off of the rail ends in the usual formation thereof. The ends of the rails 1 are seated in the railchair 3, which comprises a base 4 and spaced wings or sides 5 to rest snugly against the opposite sides of the web of the rail.
If desired, the sides 5 of the chair 3 may be reinforced by suitable webs 6, connecting said sides with the base portion of the rail. The adjacent ends of the rails lare provided with transverse op enings therethrough,which are adapted to register with openings in the sides of wings 5 of the rail-chair 3.

The double catch. member 13 is introduced into operative position by being passed flatwise through the openings 16 and then turned upwardly to cause the lug 15 to assume a vertical position between the wings 5 of the chair 3, so as to prevent lateral play7 movement, or displacement4 of the catch. Such arrangement of the member 13 likewise so disposes the noses 14.- that said noses project upwardly in such a way that they may be readily engaged with the outer ends of the levers 11, as shown most clearly in Figs. 1 and Z of the drawings.
The invention is comparatively simple in its construction and is particularly advantageous by reason of the fact that it admits of quick application and detachment of the arts.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a rail-joint, and in combination with the meeting ends of rails, a rail-chair, transverse fastening members passing through the rail ends and the sides of the chair7 and cams connected with said fastening members and operable to engage the chair to prevent displacementof such members.
2. In a rail-joint, and in combination with the meeting ends of rails, a rail-chair, transverse fastening members passing through the rail ends and sides of the chair, said fastening members embodying a head at one end adapted to bear against a side of the chair, and cams at the opposite end of said fastening members and operable to engage the opposite sides of the chair in the manner specified.
In a rail-joint, and in combination with the meeting ends of rails, a rail-chair, fastening members for securing the rails to the chair and passing transversely through said rails and the side portions of said chair, a head at one end of each fastening member adapted to bear against one side of the chair, and a cani-lever applied to the opposite end of such fastening member and arranged to bear against the opposite side of the chair to prevent displacement of the fastening member.
4. In a rail-ioint, and in combination with the meeting ends of rails, a rail-chair, fastening members for securing the rails to the chair and passing transversely through said rails and the side portions of said chair, a head at one end ot' each fastening member adapted to bear against one side of the chair, and cam-levers detachably connected with the opposite end of each fastening member and having the cams thereof arranged to bear against the opposite sides of the chair for the purpose specified.
5. ln a rail-joint, and in combination with the meeting ends of rails, a rail-chair, fastening members for securing the rails to the chair and passing transversely through said rails and the side portions of said chair, a head at one end of each fastening member adapted to bear against one side of the chair, the opposite end oi.' each fastening member being provided with a pivot-pin opening, a cam-lever for each fastening member, a pivotpin projecting from the cam-lever and passing through the pivot-pin opening of the fastening member, and means for interlocking said pivot-pin with the fastening member, admitting of detachment of the cam-lever.
6. In a rail-joint, and in combination with the meeting ends of rails, a rail-chair, fastening members for securing the rails to the chair and passing transversely through said. rails and the side portions of said chair, a head at one end of each fastening member adapted to bear against one side of the chair, the opposite end of each fastening member vbeing provided with a pivot-pin opening, a
cam-lever for each fastening member, a. pivotpiii projecting from the carri-lever and passing through the pivot-pin opening of the fastening member, the pi vot-pin of each canilever having an elongated head to pass through the pivot-opening of its fastening member and adapted t-o interlock the canilever therewith, and catch means cooperating with the cam-levers to hold the same in operative position..
7. In a rail-joint, the eoml'iiiiation oil meeting ends of rails, a rail-chair receiving said ends, transverse fastening members passing through the rail ends and the sides of the chair, cam-levers applied to said fastening members for the purpose specified, and catch means coacting with said levers.
S. ln a rail-joint, the combination of meetiiig ends of rails, a rail-chair receiving said ends, transverse fastening members passing through the rail ends and the sides of the chair, cam-levers applied to said fastening members for the purpose speciiied, and a double catch attached to the rail-chair and having catch-noses to coact with the camlevers.
9. In a rail-joint, the combination of meeting ends of rails, a rail-chair receiving said ends, transverse fastening members passing through the rail ends and the sides ofthe chair, cam-levers applied to said fastening members for the purpose specified, and a double catch passing through opposite sides of the chair and provided with means for preventing displacement thereof from the chair, said catch having catch-noses to engage the cam-levers for the purpose specied.
