Description
Elyria e, fr. Jonico, on new ironie, in in "lnnrnoveloen'l' in 'ri-io Anilieeoroee on leoni,
Speeilicntion forming port oi' Lettere Potent No. @9535?, doteil Sepiembor 16, i851.
To all whom it may vconcern e Be it known theol, SAMUEL T..Jc1-ine, of
the city, county, end State of New `Yorlglnere" iron. The ore celled Fronklioitef hithertoonly found in considerable 'quentiliesV in the vicinity of Franklin furnace, Seesexconnty, in 'the-State of Neevaierseyontains, according lo Berthier and according to Thompson: Berthier., Thompson.
Peroxide of iron 66.1 Oxide fzinc.. .1. .17 17,425 Seeqnioxide of mungeneee .16. 4 14.9530 einn. ...v V `weer Water ,1. l 0.56@
A portion of the oxide el' zinc is 'mechonically mixed with the ore, and hy the way oi' distinction is usually celled. free zinc,.while another portion is more intimately blended with the'iron and manganese, and ie coiled thechemically-combined pori-ion of the zinc.
Hithert'o the frnnklinite'hns'not been deemed of much vaine for smeliiugfpnrposos, owingio the diicultes attendin'giis reduction; hun i have found by experiment that when admired with other .impure ores of iron in the Camion forge, or with pig or crudo iron oi hotohort'or cold-short qualities arising from ndminlznreoi sulphur, phospliorus, silica, or' other imperi tiesin the paddling or-hoiiingfernoce, ihese imperfections may he wholl y removed', 'or oiheio wise thequnlity qi the iron frequently-belicht@ by it. 1
In effecting theprocess of' pnriiceiion Ihe so-cnlled chemically-combined portion oi'the zinc performs an important partgowing toite lesser tc'ndency't'o volatilize-than thotoi the free zinc under high temperature, whereby it is (le tained in contact with t-he 'ore or iron to he improved until a morey completeimprovement is e'eotedivhile ille other oxides oi' 'iron' and manganese coniriiinie their oid oleo by attackingthe cerboneceons metiers and combined carbon contoined in the pig-metal or otherwise mixed with the orea The fronklinitc moy be broken in nhont the size of o walnut; or less, and charged into ehe Ueialnn forge along with the iron ore io he improved. in proportions varying from iiiveper cent. or more, according io theeecio intended on the various qualities -oi the ores or ille resulting iron intended. to
be produced or improved by il).
' llnsonie kinde of ores-euch es bog orespnrtolring largely of phosphorus ond silica, i have found lire per oentonly to produce n. morkedimprovemeni, emi haii o furtheroddition, eqriol to @ineen per cenio in the whole, hos produced on iron oi' o remarkably superior quality, while einer ores. here required o larger proporiion, i
. lin the peddling or beilinglfnrnoce, when charged in along with the pig-motel, i have fennel niiet in onine kinds oi the letter which produce nielied iron of the hoi-short or cold.- ehori, onolieiee the fronkiiniieoliorged with iiI in elle proporlion'oi nre pennelliu io one weight hon ennirely removed alle initier leihen-while ien per com. ooe required io remove thcformer.' lin other inezunece Borge proportions, varying upto iirenly' per eeoia, or more here been re ooirednd il here iherehy frequently obtained from inferior pigeneiei ihe heel; quality of rehoed iron, erich-oe is adopted io ilse manufacture of horseshoe-nelle end orner purposesreqniring ihe heet onoiiiiee el iron.
The proportions lo he oppliell moet :lecce eerily depend in o groei; degree on ihe qnoliiiee of ihre ore' or pig-metal to be opernieilpgiipon,
onli which the experience oi lilo uorlrmiiii con orriveeoiae siete oi' fooien the leiter may he attended with a greater degree of economy.
The more thoroughly it is worked into or infor the improvement or galvanization of iron at high temperatures, there must be aconsiderable volatilization and waste of the-fumes in the state of oxide, &c. These may be collected and saved by vthe employment of suitable rcceirers in connection with the furnace.
Having thus ffully described the nature of myinvcntion, what I claim as new ltherein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The application of franklinite to the improvement of iron in the process of reduction from its ores and in the neryor paddling of coarseor pig` iron according to the method as above described.
