Description

PATENTED 00130, 1906.
NOQ 834.494.
G. V. SA'NB0RN. GAME BOARD. APPLICATION FILED HA E. 1 1906.
Eat E- stmlrorn' I r album pa UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 30, 1906.
Application filed March 1, 1906. Serial No. 303,686.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GERTRUDE VICTORIA SANBoRN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Game-Boards; and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in game-boardsfisuch as checker-boards, chessboards,'and the likeand particularly with reference to the provision of means for holding the pieces around the sides of the board when the pieces are not in use and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed. 7
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the game-board embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the same, taken on the plane indicated by the line a a of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the same, taken on the plane indicated by the line b'b of Fig. 1. i
For the purpose of this specification the game-board 1 is here shown as a checker or chess board. It may be any other form of board, however, within the scope of my invention. The board is provided around its sides with recesses 2, which are open at their upper sides and at their outer ends and are of suitable size and shape to receive the pieces 3. In order to retain the pieces in the said recesses and at the same time enable the pieces to be readily taken out of the said recesses, I provide spring-keepers 4, which are provided with spring-arms 5, that enter the said recesses and bear against the o posite sides of the pieces. The said spring-l ee ers are secured to the edges of the boar at points between and contiguous to the recesses by means of tacks, screws, or other suitable fastening devices 6. Within the scope of my invention the spring-keepers may be of any suitable construction and may be secured in place by any suitable means, and I do not desire to limit myself in this particular. The game-board may be made of wood, papier-mach, or any other suitable material.
\ Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A game-board having recesses in its sides open at their u per sides and at their outer ends and of suc size and shape as to enable them to receive the game-pieces, and springkeepers having spring-arms in the sides of the said recesses to bear against the sides of the pieces to retain the latter in said recesses against casual displacement.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GERTRUDE VICTORIA SANBORN.
