To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT WANNER, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing in Hoboken, county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference which form a part of this specification.

' My present invention relates to seating appliances, and it has reference particularly to opera and similar chairs which are permanently fixed in rows or other convenient arrangement, as illustrated, for instance, in the application of Edwin P. Wanner for application for patent for improvements in chairs, filed June 23, 1905, Serial No. 266,548.

My invention has for its object to simplify, cheapen, and render more substantial and compact the structure of each chair.

It also has for its object to provide means whereby a row or group of chairs may be adjustably connected together, so that the chairs may be capable of being applied to various floor-plan arrangements.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the improved chair. Fig. 2 is a rear view of a group of chairs like that shown in Fig. 1. Between each two back-supports of adjoining chairs and slightly forward of the same is the usual side standard f, which in the present instance comprises a pedestal g, rearwardly-projecting strut h, and arm i, all preferably integrally formed. This side standard has as one important function to brace the back-supports of two adjacent chairs against forward tilting, and to this end it is connected with the back-supports of said chairs in the manner hereinafter to be described. On the lower portions of the back-supports a, which in each instance are in the form of pedestals n, are arranged the sleeve portions 0 of studs 1), whose body portions 9 are arcshaped and are provided with horizontal slots r. The studs 19 on adjacent back-supports a are disposed in reversed arrangement, their convex sides bearing against the intermediate strut h and being clamped together and to said strut by the bolt Z and nut m, the former of which penetrates the slots 1" of the studs. It is preferred that the pedestals n be round in cross-section and that the sleeve portions 0 be of similar form, so that there may be a pivotal movement of the latter on the former.

The manner of connecting the several chairs together above described permits various chairs to occupy different positions with respect to each other, not only with regard to spacing, but with regard to forward and back adjustment. If desired, filler pieces or washers 8 may be interposed between each bolt-head and nut m and the corresponding stud, so that a flat bearing-sur face will in each instance be afforded.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

1. The combination, with a row of chairs having independent floor-bases, of adjustable means for locking or securing said chairs together comprising corresponding but reverse curved studs projecting from the chairs, and securing means penetrating said studs horizontally, substantially as 'describ ed.

2. The combination, with a row of chairs having independent floor-bases, of adjustable means for locking or securing said chairs toing) the chair from the side-that 1S and the vertical plane gether comprising corresponding but reversecurved studs projecting from the chairs and pivotally connected therewith, and securmg means penetrating said studs horizontally, substantially as described.

3. The combination, with a row of chairs having independent floor-bases, of adjustable said chairs tohaving independent floor-b ases, of adjustable means forlocking or securing said chairs together comprising corresponding but reversecurved studs projecting from the chairs and pivotally connected therewith, a fixed part interposed between complementary studs, and securing means penetrating said studs and the fixed part horizontally, substantially as described.

5. In a row of seating appliances, the combination, with two parts to be connected, of an adjustable connection between said parts comprising a curved stud pivotally arranged on one of said parts to turn on a vertical axis and having a slot in its curved portion and securing means penetrating said slot and clamping said stud to the other part, substantially as described.

6. In a row of seating appliances, a plurality of supporting parts having independent floor-bases, in combination with adjustable means for looking or securing said parts together in various relative dispositions comprising a curved stud pivotally arranged on one of said parts to turn on a vertical axis and having a slot in its curved portion, and securing means penetrating said slot and clamping said stud to the other part, sub- 3 5 stanti ally as described.
