Be it known that I, ALFRED BREDENBERG,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Champlain, Clinton county, New York, have invented certain new and usefullm- 'provements in Embossing-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to embossing-presses,- and more particularly to such presses as are used by bookbinders for embossing and similar work requiring reat pressure.
Machines of the c ass referred to have a stationary head or member, a movable head or to provide a power mechanism which will operate the movable head with uniformity and without subjecting the same to lateral forces, whereby accuracy and precision in the operation of the machine are obtained; also, to provide a power mechanism which is simple and compact in construction and at the same time powerful and efficient in operation.
These and other objects of the invention will more fully appear from the following description. 1
My invention consists in the novel parts, and combinations herein shownand described.
The accompanying drawings, which are referred to herein and form a part hereof, illustrate one embodiment of my invention and serve, in connection with the description herein, to explain the principles thereof.

An embossing-press constructed in accordance with certain features of my. invention comprises a stationary head,"a movable head, mechanism including members movin in opposite directions transversely to the ine of movement of said movable head for operating said head, a toggle device for moving said members, power mechanism for operating- A said toggle device, said power mechanism inof said toggle device upon said oppositely- I moving members.
In accordance with the best embodiment of the invention and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings the machine is provided with a suitable base 1, a stationary head 2,.
connected to said base by the pairs of tensionerods 3 and 4, and a movable head 5, guided to move vertically between the tensi'on-rods. For the purpose of guiding the movable head 5 accurately guide-blocks 6 and 7' are preferably secured rigidly to the pairs of tension-rods 3 and 4:, respectively, said guide-blocks being provided with ways in which elongated bearings of the head 5'are accurately fitted.
, The transversely-movable members for op erating the movable head may be of any suitable construction. In accordance with the best embodiment of the invention and as illustrated in the drawings said members are .in the form of tog les 8 and 9, said toggles being suitably seated on the base 1 and arranged to engage the movable head 5 near its opposite ends. Preferably the' distance between the bases of said toggles is slightly greater than the distance between the upper ends of the same, and said toggles are constructed to move inwardly to lower'the head 5 and outwardly to force the same upwardly. Any suitable device may be employed for moving the toggle members in opposite directions as I required to cause them to properly operate the movable memberof the press. In accordance with the best construction and as shown a toggle device consisting of the links 10 and 1 1 is employed, said links being pivotally connected together at their inner ends and ivotall connected at their outer ends to t e togg es 8 and 9, preferably, by inwardly-ofiset lugs formed on the lower members of the toggles 8 and 9, asshown. In ac-' cordance with one feature of my invention the device for operating the toggles 8 and 9 is positively controlled in its action by means qlililick movement of the movable independent of the power device, whereby accuracy and precision in the operation of the tog les 8 and 9 is insured and at the same time al undue strain is taken off from the power mechanism. As shown, the pivot-pin 12, by which the toggle members 10 and 11 are connected to each other, is positively guided to move in a vertical direction by means of the vertical guideways formedin the brackets 13 and 14, secured at opposite sides of the base 1, so that the action of the toggle device 10 and 11 u on the toggles 8 and 9 is positively control ed and both tog- ,gles 8 and 9 are caused to move in exact unison and to exactly the same extent.
Any suitable means adapted to cause a head t ough the reater part of its stroke and a slow owerfu i movement of the head at the end 0 its stroke may be provided for operating the toggle device 10 and 11. In accordance with the best construction and as shown a cam 16 is provided for this purpose, said cam being mounted upon a transverse shaft 17, solidly journaled on opposite sides of said cam in the base 1. An antifrictionroller 18 is preferably mounted upon the pin 12 of the toggle device and serves to communicate the motionof the cam to said toggle device with a minimum of friction and also to insure free movement of the pin 12 and the guides 13 and 14 independently of the operation of the cam.
The cam-shaft 17 may be driven in any suitable manner. Preferably, however, and as shown it is driven by power mechanism compactly mounted on the base 1 of the machine, the same consisting of a large gear 19, secured to one end of the shaft 17 and arranged to mesh with a pinion 20, fixed to one end of a counter-shaft 21, journaled in the base 1, and provided at its opposite end with a large driving-gear 22. As shown, the gear 22 is driven by a pinion 23, fixed to one member of a clutch 25, mounted upon a powershaft 26, journaled in brackets 27, secured at one end of the base 1. The power-shaft may be driven in any suitable way, as by beltpulley 28, a fly-wheel 29 preferably being provided to insure the uniform and owerful operation of the members. The c utch 25 may be operated in any suitable way, as by an arm 30, fixed to one end of a shaft 31, which extends through the base 1 from the rear to the front of the machine, where it is provided with a pair of foot-levers 32.
It will be seen that as the cam 16 is rotated the toggle device 10 and 11 will be moved up-- from friction or strains which are apt to resuit in loss of power. All the strains to which the toggle mechanism is subjected are practically confined between the toggles and to the power mechanism for operating the same, so that no lateral forces are applied to the movable head 5. The head 5 is thus left free to move in its guides without liability of dislacemen-t wit relation to. the stationary ead. and without undue friction or strain on the parts.
My invention in its broader aspects is not limited to the particular construction shown and described, as many changes may be made in the details thereof other than those herein suggested or indicated without departing from. the main principles of the invention and without sacrificing its chief advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An embossing-press including in combination, a stationary head, a movable head, mechanism including members moving in opposite directions transversely to the line of movement of said movable head for operatin said head, a toggle device for moving sai members, power mechanism for actuating said toggle device, said power mechanism including a shaft and connections between said shaft and said toggle device constructed to cause a quick movement ofthe movable head through the greater part of its stroke and a slow powerful movement at the end of its stroke, and means independent of said power mechanism for controlling the action of said toggle device upon said oppositely-moving members. 4
