Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented May 15, 1906.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN C. BERMINGHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Locks for Ink-Table-Distribution Presses, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in bed-locks for inletable-distribution presses;

and my object is to provide simple means for quickly and reliably locking the chase containing the type in any desired position upon the type-bed of a printing-press.

The invention consists of a longitudinal bar for engaging one side of the chase, extensionbars for holding the transverse bar against the chase, keys for reliably locking the extensionbars .in place, and a pair of side lock-clamps adjustably arranged on the transverse bar and adapted to engage two opposite sides of the chase to prevent the latter from crawling or shifting on the type-bed.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, Figure 1 represents a plan view of a type-bed and ink-distribution table provided with myimprovements. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, taken 011 line II II of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the ink-distribution table, taken on line III III of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail transverse section taken on line IV IV of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the side lock-clamps. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of one of the keys employed for locking the extension-bars against accidental movement.

In said drawings, 1 designates the ink-distribution table. 2 is the type-bed, provided with the customary flanges 3, and.4 designates a pair of clamps secured to the forward end of the type-bed. All of these elements are in general use and form no part of the invention.

5 designates a pair of pockets in the under side of the ink-distribution table communieating at their forward ends with apertures 6, through which a pair of extension-bars 7, slidably arranged in the pockets, project, said extension-bars being provided at their upper front corners with transverse flanges 8, adapted to contact with either the front surface 9 of the ink-distribution table or with keys 10, and thereby limit the inward movements of said extension-bars.

Each extension-bar is provided at its longitudinal sides with alternately-arranged rectangular teeth 11-that is to say, the teeth on one side of the bar are arranged opposite the recesses 12 on the opposite side of the bar in order to provide a finer adjustment with the key, which latter has a centrally-disposed recess 13 for the reception of the extensionbar, and depending lugs 14 at its opposite ends adapted to alternately enter the recesses 12, and thus reliably lock the extension-bar from backward movement.

Keys 10 are held downwardly against accidental disengagement from the extensionbars by the upper walls 15 of recesses 16, which are longer than the keys in order that the latter may be shifted longitudinally to engage the recesses on either side of the eX- tension-bars. (See Fig. 4.)

17 designates a transverse bar, which is slightly shorter than the width of the space between flanges 3 and provided at one end 1 with a set-screw 18, which, when adjusted outwardly, presses against one of flanges 3 and forces the opposite end of the bar tightly against the other flange, and thus holds the bar against accidental movement. Said setserew is provided with an apertured head 19 for the reception of a pin or a nail, whereby it is turned, an opening 20 being provided in the bar to permit the latter movement.

21 designates a pair of side lock-clamps, each of which comprise a bar 22, provided at one end with a recess 23 for fitting over the transverse bar, a set-screw 24 for securing bar 22 at any point of its adjustment on transverse bar 17, and an adjusting-screw 25 at its opposite end for engaging one side of the chase 26.

In practice the chase is looked at any desired point upon the type-bed by placing,

transverse bar 17 against its rear side. (See Fig. 1.) Said bar is then looked from accidental movement by the proper adjustment of set-screw 18. Said bar is then positively locked from backward movement, in which direction the chase exerts its greatest pressure thereon, by the extensionbars, which are drawn out into contact therewith and reliably locked by the keys 10. The chase is then looked from forward movement by clamps 4 and one ormore filling-strips 2 6 pressed tightly against the front side of the case by said clamps.

The chase is held from lateral movement by the locking-bars 21, which are secured upon transverse bar 17 by set screws 24, after which the inner ends of screws 25 are adjusted against the opposite sides of the chase.

When a chase is used that is large enough to snugly fit the type-bed so that it may be reliably secured thereon by clamps 4 and a filling-strip, keys 10, transverse bars 17, and the side lock-clamps are removed and the extension-bars are pushed back in pockets 5 until flanges 8 contact with the vertical surfaces of recesses 16.

While I have shown but two extension-bars in the drawings, three or more will be used on presses having large type-beds to prevent the middle portion of bar 17 from springing backwardly under pressure from the chase. It may also be desirable at times to employ but one of the side lock-clamps, in which case one side of the chase will be held in contact with one of flanges 3 by a side lock-clamp abutting against the opposite side of said chase.

While I have shown the preferred form of the invention, I of course reserve the right to make such changes as properly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a type-bed, an inkdistribution table communicating therewith and provided with a pocket, the upper surface of said table being arranged in a higher plane than the upper surface of the type-bed, an extension-bar adjustably arranged in the pocket and adapted to be slid outwardly upon the upper surface of the type-bed, and means for locking said extension-bar from backward movement.

2. In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a type-bed, an inkdistribution table communicating therewith and provided with pockets, the upper surface of said table being arranged in a higher plane than the upper surface of the type-bed, extension-bars adjustably arranged in the pockets and adapted to be slid outwardly upon the up er surface of the type-bed, means for 100 mg said extension-bars from backward movement, and means on the forward ends of the extension-bars for limiting their backward movement.

3. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination with a frame pro vided with pockets, of extension-bars slidably arranged in said pockets and adapted to be slid into contact with an object to be secured upon said frame, teeth alternately ar ranged upon the longitudinal sides of said extension-bars, and keys straddling the extension-bars adapted to slide longitudinally and alternately engage the teeth upon the latter.

4. I11 an apparatus of the character described, the combination with a frame provided witha pocket, of an extension-bar slidably arranged in said pocket and adapted to be slid into contact with an object to be secured upon said frame, teeth alternately arranged upon the longitudinal sides of said extension-b ar, and a key slidably arranged upon the extension-bar provided at its ends with depending lugs for engaging said teeth.

5. In an apparatus of the character de scribed, the combination with a frame provided with pockets, of extension-bars slidably arranged in said pockets and adapted to be slid forwardly, teeth alternately arranged upon the longitudinal sides of said extensionbars, keys slidably arranged upon the extension-bars adapted to engage the teeth on the latter, and a transverse bar interposed between the extension-bars and the object to be secured upon the frame.

6. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination with a frame provided with pockets, of extension-bars slidably arranged in said pockets and adapted to be slid forwardly, teeth alternately arranged upon the longitudinal sides of said extensionbars, keys slidably arranged upon the extension-bars adapted to engage the teeth on the latter, a transverse bar interposed between the extension-bars and the object to be secured upon the frame, and means for securing said transverse bar to the flanges on the frame.

7. In an apparatus of the character described, a transverse bar, and a side lockclamp consisting of a bar provided at one end with a recess for the reception of the transverse bar, a set-screw at said recessed end for engaging the transverse bar, and an adjustibng-screw at the opposite end of the clamp- 8. In an apparatus of the character de scribed, the combination with a type-bed, a chase, and an ink-distribution table having pockets, of extension-bars slidably arranged in the pockets and adapted to be slid forwardly into contact with the chase, flanges on the front upper corners of the extensionbars, teeth on the opposite sides of the extension-bars, the teeth on one side being opposite the spaces between the teeth on the opposite side of each of said bars, keys having recesses to fit over the eXtensionbars, and lugs depending from the opposite sides of the keys adapted to alternately enter the spaces at the opposite sides of the extension-bars.

9. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination with a type-bed, a chase, and an ink-distribution table having recesses in its front surface and pockets in its under side communicating at their forward ends with the recesses, of extension-bars slidably arranged in the pockets and adapted to be slid forwardly into contact with the chase, and keys adapted to slide longitudinally in the recesses and alternately engage the teeth on the opposite sides of the extension-bars.

10. In an apparatus of the character de scribed, the combination with a type-bed having flanges at two of its sides, a chase, and an ink-distribution table, of extension-bars adj ustably secured to the ink-distribution table, means for locking said extension-bars from backward movement, a transverse bar adapted to be interposed between the chase and the extension-bars having an opening in one end, and a set-screw projecting through said end provided with an apertured head arranged in the opening of the transverse bar.

11. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination with a type-bed, a chase, and an ink-distribution tab1e,of extension-bars slidably secured to the table, means verse bar and adapted to engage two sides of the chase.
