To all whom it ma concern.-

Be it known that 1, JOHN M. S-ALvli, Jr., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan,'in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Gauntlet, of which the following is a full, clear, and

\ exact description.

The invention relates to a peculiar stiffened cuff, es ecially for gaunflets such as are em ployed y military officers, carriage, and automobile drivers, and for similar uses. The object of the-invention is to construct the cuff so that it or the gauntlet, if the cuff is attached thereto, may be conveniently folded into a small compass, enabling it to be placed in ones pocket when not in use.

Heretofore the cuffs of gauntlets have been made more or less rigid. so that it is inconvenient or impossible to compactly fold the gauntlet. My invention seeks to overcome this disadvantage, and in doing so I construct the cuff of the gauntlet of a number of longitudinally-disposed separate fiat st'ff ening sheets or pieces, preferably covered inside and outside of the cuff. When in use, the cuff of the gauntlet thus constructed" efiectually serves its purposes,and when the gauntlet is not in use the separate stifienin sheets or ieces in the cuff enable the cuj' to be fol ed compcx tly and the gauntldt to be placed in ones pocket. Further, the cuff of the construction referred to is more flexible than the usual cuff, and consequently allows greater freedom of movement to the wearer. Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the preferred manner of carrying out my invention, and in which drawings Figure 1 is a view of the gauntlet with part of the cuff broken. away. Fig. 2 is a crosssection through the cuff, and Fig. 3 is a section showing the gauntlet folded. The cuff of the gauntlet is provided with a number of stiffening stri s or sheets a, which may be of leather, card card, or any other flexible, semifle'xible, or stifi sheet material.

These stiffening strips or sheets a extend longitudinally of the cuff, and they are preferably covered inside and outside by leather 1). The leather is stitched together between the adjacent edges of the stiffening-sheets, as indicatcd at e, and is stitched together at the inner and outer edges of the cuff, as indicated at f, thus securely confining the stifieningsheets.

The gauntlet thus constructedmay be worn as'usual, and when not in use the cuff may be folded, as shown in Fig. 3', and the body of the glove folded back against the cuff, thus reducing the gauntlet to the most compact form. Further, by employing the separate stiffening strips or sections and stitching them together, as described, the end is given a more attractive appearance than in the gaunt-lets heretofore constructed.-

desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

,/ 1. A cufi formed of flexible material, a

number of separate fiat stiffening-sheets secured to the cud in the lane thereof, and with their side edges close y adjacent to each other whereby to permit the cuff to be folded into regular parallel folds, the stiffeningsheets tapering toward one end of the end to give a tapering form to the cuff.

2. A cufi formed with two thicknesses of flexible material, a number of separate flat stiffening-sheets laid flatwise between said thicknesses of flexible material and having their edges closely adjacent to each other, and stitchin extending through the said layers of flexible material and between the edges of the stifienin sheets, whereby to allow the cuff to be fol ed into fiat parallel folds.
