Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. DOLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Weller, in the county of Monroe and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in apparatus for adjusting and holding sections of wagon-boxes, and comprises various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the application of my invention to a wagon-box. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 1L

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates one section of a box of a wagon, and B a second section when it is desired to build up a box for larger capacity, and C designates a guide-bar which is fastened to the section B and adapted to engage the plate C, held to the inner face of the section A of the box by means of bolts C Fastened to the outer face of the section A by means of said bolts C is a bracket member D, having mounted in registering apertures therein a bolt E, the inner throw of which is limited by the plate D held by said bolts and member D in a recess in the outer face of the section A of the box, and F designates a spring which is mounted upon said bolt and hearing at one end against the bracket-arm and at its other end against a washer N, which is mounted upon the bolt and held from movement in one direction by means of a pin Q passed through the bolt. The ofiice of said spring is to normally hold the inner end of the bolt adjacent to the face of the box.

J designates a bar, which is fastened to the upper section B and provided with apertures J, spaced apart and adapted to receive said bolt as one or another of the apertures come into registration with the apertures in said bracket-arm. By reference to the sectional view of the drawings it will be observed that said bar J is adapted to slide through an aperture D, formed in the bracket-arm, and when said spring-actuated bolt engages one or another of the apertures in the bar J the latter will be held in an adjusted position.

In order to retract the bolt from engagement with said bar J, a ring M is fastened to the bolt, whereby the finger of an operator may conveniently grasp the same. A brace P is fastened to the outer face of the lower portion of the box, and its upper portion is fastened to said bracket-arm.

In the drawings I have shown my invention as applied to both ends of the boxes.

From the foregoing it will be observed that by the provision of my improved apparatus as shown and described a simple and efficient means is afforded for holding the two sections of the box together and allowing the upper section to be held at diflerent locations, as may be desired.-

What I claim is- 1. In combination with the two sections of a wagon-box, a U-shaped bracket member, bolts fastening said member longitudinally with and to the lower section of the box, a spring-pressed bolt passing through the arms of said bracket member, one arm of the latter having an inwardly-bent portion forming a recess intermediate the bent portion and the face of the box, plates held by said bolts to the opposite faces of the lower section of the box, and a perforated bar secured to the outer face of the upper section of the wagonbox and adapted to enter said recess as the sections are fitted together, said bolt de signed to engage the perforations of said bar to hold the sections together, as set forth.

2. In combination with the two sections of a wagon-box, a U-shaped bracket member, bolts fastening said member longitudinally with and to the lower section of the box, a spring-pressed bolt passing through the arms of said bracket member, one arm of the lat ter having'an inwardly-bent portion forming a recess intermediate the bent portion and the face of the box, plates held by said bolts to the opposite faces of the lower section of the box, and a perforated bar secured to the outer face of the upper section of the wagonbox and adapted to enter said recess as the sections are fitted together, said bolt de- IIO signed to engage the perforations of said bar to hold the sections together, said plate upon the outer face of the lower section of the box adapted to limit the inner throw of said spring-pressed bolt, as set forth.

3. In combination with the two sections of a wagon-box, a U-shaped bracket member, bolts fastening said member longitudinally with and to the lower section of the box, a springre'ssed bolt passing through the arms of said racket member, one arm of the latter having an inwardly-bent portion forming a recess intermediate the bent portion and the face of the box, plates held by said bolts to the opposite faces of the lower section of the box, a perforated bar secured to the outer face of the upper section of the wagon-box and adapted to enter said recess as the sections are fitted together, said bolt designed to engage the perforations of said bar to hold the sections together, said plate upon the outer face of the lower section of the box adapted to limit the inner throw of said spring-pressed bolt,-and a bar'faste'ned to the inner face of the upper section of the box and adapted to engage the plate upon the inner face of the lower section of the box, as
