Be it known that 1, JOHN FRANcIs Wise, a subject of the King of Great Britain, of 37 Claude road, Scylla Road, Peckham, in the county of Surrey, England, have invented a new and useful Adjustable and Automatic Book-Marker, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to book-markers in which the marker is inserted between the leaves of the book between any two pages which are to be indicated; and the objects of my invention are, first, to enable the marker to be readily transferred from page to page of the book as desired; second, to insure the retention of the marker at the page which has been reached when the book is laid aside, and, third, to allow the marker to remain attached to the book when not in use without offering any inconvenience. I attain these objects by the devices illustrated in the accompanyin drawings, in which 1 Fi ure 1 is a face view of the inner side of the device, showing the hinged arm turned down against the inner branch of the body forming the hook. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a back view of the device, showing two spring-pieces for holding it upon the outer cover of a book. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a side view showing the hinged arm turned up to a horizontal position and the pivoted strip in the slide turned to a similar position. Fig. 6 is a face view, and Fig. 7 a side view, of the pivoted strip. Fig. 8 is a side view showing the device applied to a book. Fig. 9 is a face view, Fig. 10 a side view, and Fig. 11 an end view, of the hin ed arm; and Fig. 12 is a side view of the sli ing piece which carries the pivoted strip. Fig. 13 is a view of another side thereof. Fig. 14 is an end view of said piece.

a is the body or clip of the device formed of a strip of elastic metal bent round at the top, so as to form the front I) and back 0 and forming between them a recess which can be fitted over the outer cover g of a book, as

shown in Fig. 8. It will be noted that body a is of substantially U shape. (1 d are two strips punched out of the front I), to which they are left adhering at their lower ends, so. that they form springs which hold the device firmly when it is fitted upon the book g.

The hinged arm f has its central part removed, so as to leave a space f between its two parallel sides, as shown in Figs. 1 and 9, and in this space is fitted and move a hollow sliding piece i, in which is pivoted the end of the pivoted piece j, which when turned down, as shown in Fig. 8, serves as a marker between the leaves of the book, while when turned up it fits against the inside of the arm f, which can then be turned down against the inner side 0 of the book, so as to occupy little space, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4.

The sliding piece i has the central part of its sides punched out and bent over upon the edges of the parallel sides of the arm f, on which it slides, as shown at k, Figs. 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 12, 13, and 14, while the end parts of its sides are punched out and bent under the same edges of the parallel sides, as shown at 1, so that the sliding piece is firmly held and guided when it slides along the arm.

The sides of the sliding piece 1'. below the central bent-down part are carried down, so

as to form ears m, in which are pivoted pins n, formed upon the edges of the pivoted piece 7', which forms the book-marker proper and is adjusted between any two leaves of the book which are to be marked, as shown in Fig. 8, or is turned back against the inside of the arm f, as shown in Fig. 4.

A small spiral spring 0, fitted into a recess in the sliding piece '5, acts against a bent projection p at the upper end of the pivoted piece 3' to hold the latter sufiiciently firmly in either its closed or open position, and small projections 1' upon the ears m serve as stops to prevent the marking-piece from moving round too far. The leaves can be turne over as required without altering the device.

The device is used in the following manner: The body a is first fitted upon the cover g of the book, Fig. 8, where it is held by the springs d d. The arm f is turned up at right angles, Figs. 5 and 8, where it is held by the spring e, and the sliding piece i is moved to the position where the pivoted markingpiece 1' will be (when turned down to the position shown in Fig. 8) above the page to be marked. The sliding piece 'L can be moved to a fresh position as required.

The edges of the marking-piece j are preferably rounded to prevent injury to the pages.

The details of construction may be varied as may be found desirable, and the device may be made of any size and of any suitable materials.

Having fully described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In an adjustable and automatic bookmarker, the combination of a U-shaped body, a horizontal arm hinged to one member of the body, a sliding piece fitting u on the horizontal arm, pieces upon the sli ing piece some bent down upon and others under the horizontal arm, a separate marking-piece ears upon the sliding piece receiving pivots upon the separate marking-piece, a spring retaining the pivoted marking-piece in either its vertical or horizontal position, substantially as set forth.
