EDWARD F. WRENCH. OF HARTWICK, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO BERNARD L. WRENCH, OF WHITESBORO. NEW YORK.
POLE-'AND-YOKE CONNECTION.
Application filed March 13, 1905- Serial N0. 249,788.
Patented July 17, 1906.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD F. WRENCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartwick, in the county of Otsego and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pole-and-Yoke Connections, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
y invention relates to an improved poleand-yoke connection for wagons; and I declare that the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description thereof sufficient to enable one skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to like parts throughout.
The purpose of my invention is to produce a cheap and eflicient means of fastening the pole of a wagon to the neck-yoke by parts which are simple in their construction and yet easily connected and at the same time safe and convenient. The invention is disclosed in one form inthe following specification and in the drawings therein referred to, and in which s Figure 1 is a side view showing the polehead, the yoke with its band, and link connections. Fig. 2 is a front view of the pole-head. Fig. 3 is a top view, and Fig. 4 is a bottom view, of the same. Fig. 5 is a bottom view of the yoke-band and link connection; and Fig. 6 is a view of the link connection inverted. Fig. 7 is a partial view in section, showing the manner of connecting the pole and the yoke members.
Referring to the figures more in detail, A represents the pole-head proper, which has upper band a and lower band a for mounting the same on the wagon-pole bymeans of bolts a. In the construction which I prefer this member is made up of separate castings, the part A and a and the part A and a being integral, the two being held together by bolt B; but the entire pole-head member may be made integral, depending upon the skill of the mechanic. The parts A and A when together form a head which is substantially hollow, having an opening 0 in the lower and front part, the lower end of which is flared outwardly, as shown at c.
D is the yoke-band encircling the yoke d and secured at the ends by bolts (2, passing through the yoke-band and the link E, which is flared at its upper end where the ends of the yoke-collar D are brought against it and is there provided with openings for bolt (2. form and arrangement of these parts is adapted to permit the yoke-band to be spread so as to receive a larger yoke and still bear against the sides of the link. The holes in the link are elongated or are made in the form of slots 65, Fig. 5, to permit of such an adjustment. Depending from link E is link bar or arm F, which has at one end a broadened head f, substantially as shown, which extends from one side of link-bar F and is recessed, as at f This link-bar is passed freely in the opening 0, the head f slipping easily through the enlargement c, as in position :20, Fig. 7. The link-bar F is then turned downwardly and then pushed up and its head passed behind the bolt B, as indicated in position y in Fig. 7. After this it is brought to the position shown at 2 in that figure, when the connection between the pole-head and the yoke is complete, as seen in Fig. l.
I illustrate my invention in a single conbut various modifications can be employed without departing from the inven- If the pole-head, for instance, is made in a single piece, it can be provided with an integral member to take theplace and perform the function of the bolt B in the drawings. I do not, therefore, limit myself to the particulars illustrated.
Having described my claim as new, Patent, is-
1. In a device of the character described, a pole-head member, connection therebetween comprising a flaring-headed link-arm, the pole-head being cut out to receive the link-arm in a vertical posiand desire to secure by Letters when in a horizontal position, in combination, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character described, a pole-head member and a yoke member, in combination with a link-headed member supported on the yoke member and adapted to be inserted and hooked into the and swung therein between the forwardlyeXtendin parts of the pole-head, substan tially as esoribed.
3. In a device of the character described, a pole member longitudinally recessed and having an opening on the under and forward surinvention, what I tion from below and lock the same therein face thereof flared at one end, a headed hooklike member adapted to fit into the said opening, means in the pole member to engage the said hook, the said hook being supported at its other end on the yoke member, substantially as shown.
4. In a device of the character described, a longitudinally recessed pole member provided with transverse bolt therein, a headed hook member adapted to engage the said bolt and to be slipped into such position from the under side of the pole member and be held rigid by the latter thereby supporting the ole on the hook member by engagement of the hook with the bolt, in combination, substantially as described.
5. A device of the character described comprising. a pole member and a yoke-engaging member with a link member and a 00k member adapted to connect the two, the said link member being flared at one end to engage the ends of the yoke-engaging member so as to permit the same to be adjusted to different sizes of yokes and to retain a close bearing on the yoke member, substantially as described.
6. In a device of the character described, a hollow pole-head with a cross-bolt therein, a hook member to engage said bolt and be held in the pole-head thereby and extend forwardly, and the pole-head being formed to engage the hook and prevent upwardand side movement, substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD F. WRENCH.
