AN, rLLi N018, Assumes TO THE PULLMAN COMPANY, or enrcaeo. ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION: or ILLINOIS. v
, PLATE AND sraugarnudrdsnms enoee. Application filed Bepte To all whom it may concern. Be it known that I, ETHAN I. Donns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pullman, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plate and Stake Structures for Gondola Cars, of which the following .is a specification. i c In order to rovide a metallic car. with sheet-metal si es or ends and 006 crating stakes possessing great "strength" and a neat appearance, I have invented a car of the gondo a type wherein the sideor-end' lates and sta s are integral, 'the stakes being hollowand pressed out of the planes of the metalsheets; To still further strengthen the structure, if desired, I insert in each hollow stake a bar properly fastened to the side or end of the car. In addition the metal side plates 20 are extended across the ends of the transverse beams of the underframe and are re.- vided with to and-bottom flanges w -ch may be ihtegra with the plates or ma com prise bars'riveted or otherwise secured t ereto.
A n the accompanying drawings I have illustrated several embodiments of my invention, wherein I Figure lie 22. plan view, partly in section,
.of a portion of a gondola car embodyin my 0 invention. Fig. 2 is aside elevationo the structure illustrated in Fig 1. [Fig 3 illustrates a modified form of combined late and stake. Fig.4 is a plan yziew, partly in section, of a portion of a car, showing amodified form of my invention. Fig..5 1s a similar new showin adiflerent modification. Fig. 6 is a vertica transverse section of a car emfploving side plates with integral tapered. ,stakes. w Fig. 7'. is avertical cross-section of a ci'tion of a car, showing amodified construcion of'to andbottom flanges for the'side; g..8 is a vertieal-cross-section of a part-of a car,' illustrating the. use of a bar .withinthehollow stake ,aandfiig. Referring first to Figs. 1 and 2, 10 characterizes the centersill, and 11 the bed -bolster.. 5o 12 is the floor of thegar-body, 13 ein the end thereof, and 14', 14 the sides, eadhofl which latter comprises a number of alternate f speisc tion or pessimism.

in conjunction with 'al- Fig. 3 have illustrated a modified construcan integral hollow rib '17, plate 16 overlapping plate 15 and being seour-ed thei'eto by rivets 18". l

are provided with a coping ,ang1e-iron34, riveted thereto, and with a tension angle-bar 3 The construction illustrated in F'g. 1 all res ects like that shown in Fig. 6, except that t e top and bottom flanges 3d and 35, extended outwardly and inwardly, respec tively, are integral with the side plates 32'.'
, In Figs. 8 and 9 I have shown a still further modification in which reinforcing-bars are inserted in the hollow stakes. In the present instance I ha e shown such bars 'l"-shaped in cross-section but it will be obvious that bars of other shape may be employed. These ba s 36,. which are of uniform transverse diniensions if their corresponding ribs are so formed and which are tapered if thetiihs tapered, are secured by means of rivets 37 passing through their flanges to the-i nie2 one of the overlapping side plates and 39, the rib on the outer plate forming the st fitting neatly about the T-bar, as i clearly shown in Fig. 9. It will be that such a plate with. integral st f; used on the sides or ends of the ca modifications may be made in. the c. tion without departing from the su istau my invention as set forth in the ap enowi claims.
This patent is intended to einbraci: only so much of the disclosure made herein as is covered by the claims.
