T all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that JAMES D. PIoKLEs', deceased, formerly a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, did invent a new and useful Improvement in Paper-Making Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates more especially to that class of paper-machines employing a cylinder over which the web of paper passes in the operation of drying; and the object of the invention is to provide simple and effective moans for causing the uniform drying of the web of paper as it passes through the machine; and a further object of the invention is to provide a device which may be attached to completed paper-machines without in any way altering the mechanism of said machines. A form of device in the use of which these objects may be attained is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a paper-making machine, showing the improved regulator applied thereto and with the star-wheels inoperative. Fig. 2 is a detail, view in horizontal section, through the improved regulator on the axis of the driving-shaft and with one star-wheel in position to be engaged by a wiper. Fig. 3 is a detail view, in vertical section, through the same on the axis of the driving-shaft.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 1 dene es a portion of the frame of a paper-making machine. AThis frame supports, among other parts, anumber of dryingcylinders 2, two only of which are shown herein, and-about which the web 3 of paper passes in its travel through the machine and y which it is dried. A tension-roller 4 is mounted in the frame of the machine, as by means of hangers 5, depending from a hollow rock-shaft 6. This rod 6 is mounted at each end in the side parts or brackets 6'l on the frame of the machine, and preferably two of the hangers are employed, one located near each end of the shaft for supporting each end of the tension-1 oll 4. The hangers 5 are secured to the rock-shaft 6, which has a rocking movement in its bearings in the frame, so that the tension-roller 4 may be moved by the pressure of the web of paper 3 thereon, which pressure of course will depend upon the amount of moisture in 55 the paper at this point.
The tension-roll 4 has at one end argear 7 'meshing with a gear 8 on a shaft 9, extending through the rock-shaft 6. A regulatorframe 10 is secured to the hollow rock-shaft 6o 6, preferably outside of the frame 1 of the machine. This frame has a gear-case 11 at one end and an extension 12 therefrom and a pendulum-support 13, extending upward. A pinion 14 is secured to one end of the shaft 9 Within the gear-casing 11, this pinion meshing with a pinion 15, which in turn meshes with a pinion 16, located within the gearcasing 11. The pinion 16 bears a wiper-arm 17, on which is secured a wiper 18, arranged to strike star- wheels 19 and 20, mounted on a screw-threaded shaft 21. This shaft 21 is suitably mounted in the frame 11 in extensions therefrom, as shown, and bears a threaded nut 22, meshing with the thread on the shaft 21. This nut bears a pendulumactuator 23, which is in the form of a slotted plate, the slot in which receives the pendulum 24. A cord 25 extends from the nut 22 around suitable pulleys or sheaves 26, that may be arranged in any desired manner to a valve-lever 27 of a valve 28. This valve 28 is located in a steam-pipe 29, which conducts steam or heating medium to the cylinders 2. The connection to these cylinders is of the usual well-known form common to machines of this class, and further illustration and description therefor are deemed unnecessary herein. A weight-support 30 depends from the frame l0, on which are located weights 31 for holding the roller 4 against the web 3.
The pendulum 24 is pivoted to the pendulum-support 13, depending therefrom and having at its llower end abob 32. The penlulum 24 extends on opposite sides of the screwshaft 21 and engages a sleeve 33, that has a lengthwise sliding movement on the shaft 21, but imparts rotative movement thereto. The star-wheels 19 and 2O are secured to this sliding sleeve. As the frame 10 moves under the influence of the pressure of the web of paper 3 on the tension-roller 4 the bob 32 will cause the sleeve 33 to be moved along the shaft 21, causing one or the other of the 105 star-wheels 19 or 2O to be placed in the path of movement of the wiper 18.
The operation of the device is as follows:

As the web of paper 3, traveling through the machine in the direction indicated by the arrow, Fig. 1, passes the last drying-cylinder it is tested until `found to be of the proper degree ol dryness, when weights 31 are so placed upon the weight-support 30 that the pendulum 24 will be so located that the wiper 18 will strike neither of the star- wheels 19 or 20. l/Vhen the web of paper passing the cylinder is of the proper degree ol: dryness and the pendulum 24 is in the position described, the
regulator is in proper adjustment 'for controlling the heat ol" the cylinders 2 to keep the web of paper at the proper degree of dryness. The condition of the web at the point of location of the tension-roller 4 of course governs its condition as to dryness when it leaves the j last cylinder, and should the web become too wet at said roll 4 by reason of an insuiiicient supply of heat to the cylinders or by thickening of the web or for any other purpose the tension thereon and. pressure on the roller 4 will become decreased. This will allow said tension-roller to swing to the right from the position shown in F ig. 1, rocking the shaft 6 and lowering the end of the frame 10 opposite the end connected to said rod. This lowering of the outer end. of the frame 1() will move the pendulum-support 13 to the left and likewise the pendulum 24 and the sleeve 33 and star-wheels 1 9 and 2O in the same direction. This will cause the teeth oi' the starwheel 2() to be located in the path of movement ol the wiper 18. This wiper rotates in the direction of the small arrow shown in Fig. 1, so that the star-wheel 20 and the shaft 21 are rotated. The thread. on the shaft 21 is a right-hand thread, and the rotation of the shaft in this direction causes the nut 22 to travel to the right, the nut being held against rotative movement. This draws upon the cord 25, operating the valve-lever 27 to admit steam to the cylinders, causing more heat to be applied to the web 3. In order to prevent travel of the nut 22 along the shaft 21 to an undue extent, the end wall of the slot in the pendulum-actuator 23 will engage the pendulum 24, swinging` it and the sleeve 33 to the right, thus moving the teeth of the starwheel 20 out of the path of movement of the wiper 18. It will be-understood that the cylinders may not becomeheated to dry the web to a suflicient extent before the nut 22 has moved to this point, but that the arrival of the nut at this point will have opened the steam-valve to a sui'licient degree to eventually cause the web to be properly dried. Should the web become too dry, a reversal of the operation just described will be the result and the amount of steam supplied to the cylinders will be reduced. lt will be noted that the rod or support 30 for the weights 31 is secured to a nut 31a, adjustable along'the' threaded shaft 32a, having a hand-wheel 33a. This is for the purpose of securing a Aline adjustment of the weights to regulate the pressure upon the tension-roll, the coarse adjustment being determined by putting on or taking oli weights and the finer adjustment by means of the threaded shaft and hand-wheel, locating the weight nearer or farther from the pivot oi' the frame.
What is claimed as this invention, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-

In a machine for drying a web passing therethrough, a tension device to engage said web, a swinging frame rigidly connected with said device, means for supplying heat to said machine, a movable member mounted on ply means, and a weighted device operated by the swinging movement of the :trame to determine the direction of movement of said movable member.

In a paper-making machine or the like, a rock-shaft, a tension-roller to impart movement to the rock-shaft, a regulator-frame secured to the rock-shaft, means for controlling the supply of heat to the machine, a movable member located on the regulator-frame and connected with the means for controlling the supply of heat, connections between the tension-roller and movable member for operating the latter, and means mounted on the regulator-frame for determining the direction of movement of the movable member dependent upon the pressure upon the tension-roll.

In a paper-making machine or the like, a rock-shaft, a tension-roll to engage a web traveling through the machine and rigidly connected with the rock-shaft, a regulatorlrame secured to the rock-shaft, means for controlling the supply of heat to the machine, a movable member mounted on the regulator frame and connected with the means for controlling the supply of heat, gearing between the tension-roll and movable x member for operating the latter, and means IOO said frame and connected with the heat-supy IIO ISO
mounted on the regulator-frame for determining the direction of movement of the movable member dependent upon the pressure of said web upon the tension-roll.

A regulator for paper-making machines including a tension-roll to engage a web traveling through the machine, means for controlling a sup ly of heat to the machine, a movable mem er to operate said means for controlling the supply of heat, means for operating the movable member, and a weighted device operated by pressure on the tensionroll for determining the direction of movement of said movable member.
7, A regulator for paper-making machines including a tension-roll to engage a web traveling through the machine, means for controlling the supply of heat to the machine, a movable member connected with the means for controlling the supply of heat, connections between the tension-roll and movable member for operating the latter, and a weighted device for determining the direction of movement of the movable member dependent upon the pressure upon the tension-roll.

A regulator for paper-making machines including a tension-roll to engage a web traveling through the machine, means for supplying heat to the machine, a regulator-frame rigidly connected with the tension-roll, a pendulum mounted on said frame, a movable member connected with the means for controlling the supply of heat, means for operating the movable member, and connections between the pendulum and means for operating the movable member to determine the direction of movement of the latter dependent upon the pressure upon the tension-roll.

A regulator for paper-making machines or the like including a tension-roll to engage a web traveling through the machine, means for controlling the supply of heat to the paper-making machine, a frame rigidly connected with the tension-roll, a movable member mounted on the frame and connected with the means for controlling the supply of heat to the machine, means for operating the movable member, and a pendulum mounted on the frame to determine the direction of movement of the movable member dependent upon the pressure of the web upon the tension-roll.

chines including a tension-roll to engage a web passing through the machine, a regulator-frame rigidly connected to the tensionroll, means for controlling the supply of heat to the machine, a movable member mounted` pressure of the .ply of heat to the machine, a movable member mounted on the regulator-frame and connected with the means for supplying heat to the machine, connections between the tension-roll and movable member for operating the latter, and a pendulum mounted on the regulator-frame and in engagement with said connection to determine the direction of movement of the movable member dependent upon the pressure of the web upon the tension-roll. A regulator for paper-making machines including a tension-roll to engage a web of paper passing through the machine, means for supplying heat to the machine, a screw-threaded shaft, a nut engaging the thread on the shaft and connected with the means for controlling the supply of heat to the machine, connections between said tension-roll and the screw-threaded shaft for rotating the latter, and means for determining the direction of rotation of said shaft dependent upon the pressure of said web upon the tension-roll.

A regulator for paper-making machines, including a tension-roll to engage a web of paper passing through the machine, a regulator-frame rigidly connected with the tension-roll, means for controlling the supply of heat to the machine, a screw-threaded shaft mounted upon the regulator-frame, a nut engaging the screw-threaded shaft and connected with the means for controlling the. supply of heat, connections between the tension-roll and screw-threaded shaft for rotating the latter, and means mounted on the frame for controlling the direction of rotation of the screw-threaded shaft dependent on the pressure of the web upon the roller. i 14. A regulator for paper-making machines including a tension-roller to engage a web traveling through the machine, a regulator-frame rigidly connected therewith, means for controlling the supply of heat to the machine, a screw-threaded shaft mounted upon the regulator-frame, a nut engaging the screw-threaded shaft and connected with the means for controlling the supply of heat to the machine, connections between the tension-roll er and screw-threaded shaft for operating the latter, and a weighted device mounted on said frame to determine the direction of rotation of the screw-threaded shaft dependent on the pressure of the web upon the roll.

web traveling through the machine, a rockshaft to which said roll is rigidly connected, a regulator-frame rigidly connected with the rock-shaft, a screw-threaded shaft mounted in said frame, a system of gearing mounted on the frame and transmitting movement from the tension-roll to said threaded shaft, a weighted device mounted on the frame and in engagement with said gearing to determine the direction of rotation of the threaded shaft dependent on. the pressure of the web upon the roller, a nut engaging the screw-threaded shaft, means for controlling the supply of heat to the machine, and connections between said supply-controlling means and the nut.

A regulator for paper-making machines including a rock-shaft, a tension-roller supported by the rock-shaft, a connectingshaft extending through the rock-shaft, gearing between the roller and connecting-shaft, a regulator-frame rigidly connected with the rock-shaft, means for controlling the supply of heat to the machine, a movable member mounted on the frame and connected with said supply-controlling means, connections between the connecting-shaft and said movable member, and means for determining the direction of movement of said movable member dependent on the pressure of the web upon the tension-roll.

A regulator for paper-making machines including a rock-shaft mounted in the frame, a tension-roll rigidly secured thereto to engage a web passing through the machine, a connecting-shaft extending through the rock-shaft, connections between the roll and connecting-shaft, a regulator-frame rigidly secured to the rock-shaft, a movable member mounted on the regulator-frame, connections between the connecting-shaft and movable member, a pendulum mounted on the regulator-frame and engaging the connections to determine the direction of movement of the movable member, means for controlling the supply of heat to the machine, and connections between the movable member and supply-controlling means.

A regulator for paper-making machines including a tension-roll to engage a web traveling therethrough, a threaded shaft operatively connected with the tension-roll, said connection including toothed wheels and a wiper to engage the same, means dependent on the pressure of the web upon the roll for moving the star-wheels into the path of movement of the wiper, a nut engaging the threaded shaft, means for controlling the supply of heat to the machine, and connections between said nut and.supply-controlling means.

A regulator for papermaking machines including a tension-roller to engage a web passing through the machine, awiper operatively connected with the tension-roll, toothed wheels movable into and out of the aaesso path of movement of the wiper, means for moving said wheels dependent upon the pressure of the web upon the roller, a threaded shaft connected to rotate with said toothed wheels, a nut engaging said threaded shaft, means for controlling the supply of heat to the machine, and connections between said nut and the supply-controlling means.

A regulator for paper-making machines including a supporting-shaft, a tension-roller mounted thereon, a regulatorframe rigidly connected therewith, a threaded shaft mounted in the regulator-frame, a sleeve bearing toothed wheels and movable lengthwise on the shaft but secured to rotate therewith, the toothed wheels secured to the sleeve, a wiper to engage the toothed wheels and operatively connected with the tensionroll, a weighted device mounted on the regulater-frame and connected with said sleeve, a nut engaging the screw threaded shaft, means for controlling the supply of heat to the machine, and connections between said nut and supply-controlling means.

In a regulator for paper-making machines including a movable member, means for moving said member, a pendulum for determining the direction of movement of said member, a pendulumactuator connected with the movable member to engage the pendulum, means for controlling the supply of heat to the machine, and connections between the movable member and supply-controlling` means.

Aregulator forpaper-making machines including a pressureeroll to engage a web passing through the machine, a regulatorframe rigidly connected with the pressureroll, a wiper mounted in the regulator-frame and connected 'with the pressure-roll, toothed wheels mounted on a sleeve movable lengthwise to cause the wheels to engage the wiper, a threaded shaft supporting said sleeve and receiving rotation therefrom, a nut engaging the threaded shaft, a pendulum mounted on the regulator-frame and in engagement with said sleeve, a pendulum-actuator secured to the nut, means for controlling the supply of heat to the machine, and connections between said nut and supply-controlling means.

In a machine for drying a web passing therethrough, a tension device to engage said web, a swinging frame rigidly connected with the tension device, a movable member borne by said frame, means for supplying heat to the machine, connections between the movable member and the heat-supplying means, connections between the tension device and movable member for operating the latter, and a weighted device mounted on the frame and connected with the movable member to determine its direction of movement.
