Description

. ENITED STATES PATENT OEEIOE JOHN SOH WEOHLER, OF PHILADELPHiA, PENNSYLVANIA; ASSIGNOE, BY
f 'MESNE ASSIGNMENTS,
-To-aZZ whom, iv may concern:
TO H'YGIENIC SOAP GRANULATOR COMPANY,
A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY. y CAKE oF soAP.
'Specification of' Letters Patent.
. lI atented June 26, 1906.
Application led May 3, 1901. SerialiNo. 58,568.
Be it kno-wn that I, JOHN SOHWEOHLER, a-
`citizen, of the United States, :residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cakes of Soap, of which thefol owing is a specification.
This invention relates to a cake of soap,
and more especially to a cake of soap adapted for use in a soap-dispensing machine.` 4
f It has for one of its objects to provide a' cake of soap so formed that a portion thereof will engage a coperating portion'ofthe dispensing-machine, whereb v relative movement is insured between t e cake and a device employed to dispense the soap in relatively smal articles. y
-Another o ject is to provide a cake of soap -so constructed as to allow the entire body vthereof to be disposed of without waste, said calie by reason of its peculiar-construction also'simplifying and rendering more eicient the o eration of the dispensing-machine.
Ot er objects will be inpart obvious and in rpart appear hereinafter.
he invention accordin ly conslsts in the features of construction, W ch will be exem- 1 plified in a cake of soap hereinafter descrlbed drawings.
Before entering into a description of the specific features of vmy invention and as conducing to a clearer understanding of some of the objects thereof it may here be noted that the indiscriminate use of cakes of toilet-soap is for hygienic reasons extremely undesirable, and especially is this true in places artaking of a public character, as diseases o ,a serious` nature often result by reason of the contamination of soap used therein. For the above and other reasons it is desirablethat cakes ofsoap used in such places be kept from conobjections s tact with the hands of the users, and one of the remedial 'methods roposed is to provide a machine capable o .dispensing the soap from a bar or cake vin a comminuted state, whereby the soap is not only maintained free from contagion, but is reduced to Such form i as to insure a more ready reduction to lather.
To the end, therefore, of eliminating the ecified and securing the above and other a vantages I have found it desirable/to provide a cake of soap which by reason of its shape is especially adapted for -use in a machine of the above character, as will be apparent from the following description thereof.
Referrin now to/the drawings, 1 denotes a bar or ca e of soa constructed inl accordance with one embo iment of my invention, which,as shown, is `substantially cylindrical in shape, but is provided with a flat side 2, adapted to engage with a coaoting portion of a dls ensing-machine, and is further-providedp withka longitudinally-extending central opening 3.
In order to render my invention easier understood and the advantages thereof better appreciated, I have illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 one lform of dis ensing apparatus designed -to operate upon t ebar or cake of soap formmg the subject-matter of my present inven- Y tion. It will be understood, of course, that the machine about to be described is but one of many in which the cake is capable of being used and is embodied herein merely for illustrative purposes.
In Fi s. 2 and 3 I have shown at 4 the container of the machine, showing cake 1 located therein with the flat portion 2 engaging a cooperating portion 5 of the container. The
`machine is furnished with a supportingmember 6 and a cover-section 7, carrying an operatin spindle or shaft 8, which extends downwar ly through the opening 3 in the cake of soap and has at its lower end a cutter, grater, or other soap-comminuting device 9. An o erating s aft 8.
In the operation of the machine it will be seen that o ening 3 in cake 1 accommodates shaft 8, an thus provides for the operation of the machine from a position convenient to the user, While the cooperating portion 2 of saidcake engages porti-on 5 of container 4,
crank or handle 10 is provided for;
IOO
insuringlrelative movement between the cake vided a cake of soap wherein the objects of my invention are achieved and wherein also l the above and other advantages are secured.
An important advantage inherent inthe construction of the bar of soap, above described .resides in the fact that when a cutting or grating device is rotatively mountedfor operation beneath said cake without the operating-shaft the centrally-arranged opening insuiles the utilization of the ent-ire body of the ca e.
As many changes could be made inv the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments ofmy invention could be made without departmg from the scope thereof, I intend that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is-
l.v As a new article of manufacture, a cake of soap having a curved side and a flat side, and` an opening extending longitudinally throu h the central portion thereof.
2. s a new article of manufacture, acake of soap, portions of which are comprised by curved and flat surfaces, and an o ening extending longitudinally-through t e central portion-of the same.
3. As a newarticle of manufacture, a bar i or cake of soap substantially cylindrical in shape, but having aI fiat side and a circular bore extending longitudinally from end to end therethrough.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a cylindrically-shaped bar or cake of soap of reater length than diameter, and having a at side and a bore extending lon itudina ly throu h the bar and o en from en to end.
5. cakeofsoap adhpted for use in a soapdispensing machine having a central o ening therein provided for the use of a-spin le operatin la-cutter, a portion of said cake being shape -toengage a retainin member to hold the cake in positionduring 51e process of cuttin (I As a newarticle of manufacture, a cake of soap adapted for use in a machine which dispenses the same in fine particles and having anv openingextending longitudinally therethrough, saidcake being also provided with a portion adapted to be engaged by a cooperating portion of the machine whereby the soap is maintained in operative position during the operation of the machine.
