cation.
This invention relates to improvements in pipe-couplings, the object of the invention eing to provide a coupling for the ends of two pipes which will not interfere with the iiow of water therethrough and in the use of which the pipes can be coupled and uncoupled very quickly.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is.
affront elevation of the device.
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the two coupling-sections. Fig.
4 is a broken horizontal section through the handle. I
Referring to the drawings, 1 2 indicate two pipes which it is desired to couple. Upon .the ends oi said pipes are screwed couplingsections 3 and 4, terminating at their outer Within the section 4 is inserted a short tube 7, which eX- tends into the section 3, its end abutting against an annular gasket 8, resting against a shoulder 9 in said section, and in the section 4 is also contained a spring 10, which presses against the ilangcdend 23 of the tube 7, so as to force the other end of said tube against the gasket 8.
Secured to the section 3 is a yoke 1 1, to one end of which is attached a bar 12, while at the other end is secured a tubular guide 13 `ior a disk or piston 14, which disk is placed around a rod 15, passing out through the guide and pivoted at its end to a lever 16, having a handle 17. A spring 18 is interposed between the flanged end of the tubular guide and the disk, so as to normally press said disk inward, and thus also press inward the pivoted end of the lever 16. Said lever has on its outer surface a groove or notch 19, which can be engaged by a tooth or hook 2() on the end of the bar 12, the upper edge of' the bar behind said tooth or hook sloping up ward, as shown at 21, and said lever 16 is formed in its lower edge with a recess 22,
which is semicireular in ferm in the upper portion, the ends of the semicircle. being continued downward parallel to each other to deepen the recess. This recess is of sul iicient width to pass over the coupling-section 4.
The operation of the apparatusis as follows: The two coupling-sections having been placed end to end, the lever 16 is passed over the coupling-section 4 and is moved downward until said section is in the recess 22 in said lever. The lever is then moved inward or toward the other coupling-section, so that its lower edge passes over the top of the hook or tooth 20 and behind the saine, and when it has so passed the lever is pressed further down, so that said tooth or hook engages the notch or groove in the lever and secures it in place. The spring 18 permits this inward movement of the lever to be iliade, for it permits the outward movement of the pivotal end of the lever` when sullicient pressure is applied. At the saine time it normally holds the two sections of the lever together by its pressure exerted upon the piston or disk 14. Also the spring within the coupling-section 4 presses the gasket 8 against the shoulder i) and makes a tight joint.
I claim- 1. A pipe-coupling comprising two coupling-sections adapted to be secured. to the respective. pipe ends, a yoke secured to one of said sections, a bar extending forward from one end oi said yoke and having at its l'ront end a hook or tooth, a device. inovably connected to the other' end of said yoke, a spring For depressing said device toward. said yoke, and a lever pivoted on said device and having a portion adapted to engage the other secs tion, and having also a groove or notch adapted to be engaged by said tooth or hook, substantially as described.
2. A. pipe-coupling comprising two coupn ling-sections adapted to be secured to the respecLi ve pipe ends, a yoke secured lto one oi" said sections, a bar extending forward from one end of said yoke and having at its front end a hook or tooth, a device inovably con--v nected to the other end of said yoke, a spring ior pressing said device toward said yoke, a lever pivoted on said devieeand having a port/ion adapted to engage the otherseetion,
ICO
and having also a groove or notch adapted to In Witness Whereo I have hereunto Set my be engaged by said tooth or hook, a washer hand in the presence of two subscribing Wtlo `A in the rst coupling-section, a anged tube in messes;
the second coupling-section, its edge resting against said gasket, and a spring for pressing said. Bange so that the edge of the tube rests Vtnesses: against said gasket, substantially as) de- FRANCIS M WRIGHT, scribed. BESSIE GURFINKET..
