Description

No. 313,227. PATENTED FEB. 20, 1906. J. N. MILLER.
BOOK HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED MAY27, 1905.
WITNESSES: m v 1/ l/VVE/VTOR WM JASPER N.MILLER ATTORNEYS JASPER NEWTON MILLER, OF ASHLAND, OREGON.
BOOK-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Feb. 20, 1906.
Application filed May 27. 1905. Serial No. 262.625.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JASPER NEWTON MIL- LER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ashland, in the county of Jackson and State of Oregon, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in bookholders; and it consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The drawing forming part hereof is a perspective view of my improved book-holder.
In the practical application of my invention I provide a book-holder comprising a wire A, bent to form an arched back support for the book, having at the top of the arch a loop a. The ends of the wire are bent upwardly, as at 0/, to form edge supports for the book and downwardly'upon themselves, as at M, to a point directly beneath the edge supports, the free ends of the wire being turned into rings a and forming the front supports of the book-holder. A cross-bar B is bent at either end around the loops formed by the turning back of the wire upon itself to form the front holder supports. A rear holder-support O is provided, comprising a wire lapped around the wire of the arch on either side of the loop, as at c c, and having the portion intermediate the laps formed. into a loop 0 and engaging the loop of the arch for limiting the outward motion of the back support with respect to the holder. The free end of the wire is turned into a ring, as at 0 A spring book-leaf clamp D is attached to one of the edge supports by means of the chain 01. The clamp D is intended for separating a portion of the leaves of the book at a page to which it is desired to make reference during the course of the reading.
It will be evident from the above description that I provide a book-holder simple in construction, light, and occupying but little space on the desk. It may be cheaply constructed of any suitable material, and when folded up the holders may nest together.
The edges of the book are supported out of contact with the desk or table, and the arrangement of the front supports directly beneath the edges of the book insures a very stable position of the holder.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
1. A book-holder comprising a flexible strand bent to form an arched back support having a loop at the top of the arch, the ends of the flexible strand bent upwardly to form edge supports, and downwardly upon themselves to a point beneath the edge supports, and turned into rings for supporting the holder, a cross flexible strand connecting the loops formed by the junction of the edge supports and the holder-supports, a movable rear holder-support, comprising a third flexible strand lapping the flexible strand. of the arch on either side of the inner end of the loop, and having a portion intermediate the laps bent up to form a loop for engaging the loop on the arch to limit the movement of the holder-support with respect to the holder, a chain connected to one end of the edge supports and a spring book-leaf clamp attached to the chain.
2. A book holder comprising a flexible strand bent to form an arched back support having a loop at the top of the arch, the ends of the flexible strand bent upwardly to form edge supports, and downwardly to a point beneath the edge supports to form front holder-supports, a cross flexible strand connecting the edge supports, and a back support movably secured to the arch on either side of the loop on the arch, and provided with an upward extension for engaging the loop on the arch, to limit the angular open ing of the arch-support.
3. A book-holder comprising a flexible strand bent to form an arched back support having a loop at the top of the arch, the ends of the flexible strand bent upwardly to form edge supports, and downwardly to a point beneath the edge supports to form front holder-supports, means connecting the edge supports, a back support movably connected to the arch on each side of the loop, and means on the back support engaging the loop to limit the outward movement of the arch-support.
4. A book-holder comprising a flexiblestrand bent to form arched back supports having a loop at the top of the arch, the ends of the flexible strand bent upwardly to form 5 edge supports, and downwardly to a point beneath the edge supports to form front holder-supports, means connecting the edge supports, means movably connected to. the
arch for supporting the rear of the holder, and means engaging the loop for limiting the re outward movement of the said supporting
