ADVERTISINGDEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 20, 1906.
Application filed June 18,1904. Serial No. 213,133.
T0 on whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PAULIN COUPETTE, chief engineer, a subject of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, residing at 11 Kaiser Wilhelm Ring, in the city of Cologne, King dom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented a certain new and useful Advertising Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to advertising devices; and it consists, substantially, in the details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter particularly described, and pointed out in the claims.
Though applicable to different purposes, the invention has reference more especially to devices employed in cars and similar vehicles for successively indicating the several stations lying along the route traversed by the car; and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is both simple in construction and effective in use.
A further object is to provide a device of the character referred to which comprises but few elements and which is reliable in operation, besides possessing the capacity for long and repeated service.
The above and additional objects are ob tained by means substantially such as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of an advertising device embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View thereof. Fig. 3 is a similar view of a modified form with parts broken out and also indicating the stop devices for the intermittently-operated drum. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view broken off at one side and indicating more clearly the construction and organization of certain of the operative elements employed.
Before proceeding with a more detailed description it may be stated that in the form of my improvements herein shown I employ a suitable casing, in the upper part of which is mounted a roller of special construction, suspended from which at intervals are a plurality of advertising-sheets, which are caused to be successively wound upon the roller and 'which are also successively dropped to vertical position, as and for the purpose hereinafter more particularly explained. I employ special means for efiecting the intermittent movements of the roller, as well as special stop devices therefor, and while I have herein represented my improvements in a certain preferred embodiment it will be understood, of course, that I am not limited theretoin precise detail, since immaterial changes therein may be resorted to coming within the scope of the appended claims.
Reference being had to the several parts by the designating characters marked thereon, a represents a casing of suitable dimensions having its side walls connected. by crossbars w and having in the front wall thereof an upper opening I) and a lower and larger opening 0, each of said openings being preferably closed by glass to enable the matter on the advertising-sheets to be readily observed or read from without. Mounted between the side walls of the casing at a suitable height is the shaft y of a rotatable drum, constructed of duplicate disks d, disposed a suitable distance apart upon the shaft, said disks being formed at intervals with sockets d receiving the reduced end portions d of a series of rods 6, preferably constructed of spring material. Each of the said rods 6 has secured thereto in any suitable manner an edge of a sheet f, on each side of which suitable advertising matter may be placed or printed. If desired, one face of each of said sheets may have printed thereon at the proper place the name of astreet or car-station, becoming visible through the opening I) in the casing, while the space of the opposite side of the sheet may be taken up by advertising matter of any other preferred character.
As shown in Fig. 2, the shaft of the drum has mounted thereon a ratchet wheel 9, which is engaged by a spring-pawl 9 carried by a lever Z, pivoted at one of its ends to the side Wall 1 of the casing a, as indicated at 1 while the other or free end thereof has applied thereto a rod 1 provided with a head Z working in a small cylinder 0, as and for the purpose hereinafter more particularly explained. Pivoted to the said lever Z is the upper end of a rod 'L, the lower end of which terminates in branches a, each provided with a shoe t the said rod & being formed with a slot i near its lower end and having projecting therefrom at a proper height a pin i A guide-pin 1' passes through the said slot and is secured in the said wall 1 of the casing a, while exerting a downward pressure on the pin 4& is the free end or extremity of a spring k, having its other end or extremity secured ments of the said rod 11.
to the wall 1 of the casing, as clearlyindicated in Figs. 2, 3, and 4. Working on a short shaft a mounted in the sidewall 1 of the casing a, is a two-armed lever 11,, to which an oscillating movement may be imparted by rocking the said short shaft 11. by means of a lever a connected thereto, the free end of the lever being moved by hand or automatically in any suitable manner. On imparting a rocking movement to the short shaft a the said arms of the said lever u will be caused to alternately engage the shoes i of the branches t" of the said rod i, and thus will the rod be reciprocatedvertically. On each upward movement of the rod the ratchet-wheel y will be caused to move a predetermined distance by means of the spring pawl 9 and the drum and shaft will be moved accordingly, retrograde movement of the drum being prevented by a pawl 9 which successively engages the teeth of the ratchet-wheel g. As the drum is intermittently operated the advertising-sheets f will be successively carried over and around therewith, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, to bring to view the advertising matter contained thereon, as will be readily understood. Each upward movement of the rod i is against the pressure of the free end or extremity of the spring k, bearing upon the pin i and consequently said spring operates to again carry the rod downwardly, it being understood that the lever Z partakes of both the upward and downward move- On each upward movement of the lever l the rod Z? is elevated therewith, and the said rod Z is also carried downwardly therewith, and in the said up and down movements of the rod 1 a steadying or regulating effect on the lever Z is had, due to the working of the head Z in the cylinder 4;, as will be apparent.
In order to retain the sheets f in proper relation about the drum and also to regulate the proper dropping of the sheets to vertical position, I preferably employ suitable pressure devices bearing upon the sheetssuch, for instance, as indicated at h h, Figs. 2 and 3the said devices consisting of a plurality of springs properly disposed within the up per part of the casing a, the free ends thereof being bent or beveled and arranged one behind the other and bearing upon the superposed sheets and yielding sufficiently to suecessively release the sheets as the drum is intermittently operated.
As shown in Fig. 3, I substitute for the spring-pawl g of Fig. 2 a spring-pressed pawl m, carried by the lever Z and I also employ another spring-pressed pawl n, successively engaging the teeth of the ratchet-wheel 9, so as to prevent retrograde movement of the drum. As also shown in Fig. 3, I preferably employ stop devices for preventing the drum from being carried around too far at each intermittent movement thereof, said devices comprising another gear-wheel 0, mounted upon the shaft of the drum alongside the gear-wheel g, the teeth of said gear-wheels being disposed in opposite directions, as indicated.
Mounted upon a stud r, secured to the wall 1 of the casing a, is an arm 8 of a pawl'g, said pawl being normally pressed out of engagement with the teeth of the ratchet-wheel 0 by means of a s ring p. Carried by the lever Z near the fiee end thereof, is a spring t, which as the lever Z is carried upwardly through the motion communicated thereto by the rod 6 effects a yielding engagement with the said arm 8 of the pawl (1, thereby causing the latter to swing upon the stud r and engage with one of the teeth of the ratchet-wheel 0 immediately succeeding each movement imparted to the drum by the actuating-pawl for the ratchet-wheel g.
I may sometimes employ an electric battery w, from which suitable wire connections may lead to an alarm device, as bell w which is sounded each time a movement of the intermittently-operated drum takes place. As shown in the drawings, a contact-spring z and the motion-transmitting lever I, carrying an electric contacting piece 2, are included in the electric circuit.
The rods e of the drum being formed of spring material are easily sprung to an extent suflicient to enable the reduced ends thereof to be inserted within the sockets in the disks, and the advertising-sheets are applied to the rods by simply loo ing one edge thereof, as shown, and then sipping the rods through the loops. This is an advantageous feature of construction, since the sheets may thus be applied and removed very readily, as is apparent. In order to hold the sheets taut when in a suspended or vertical position, each sheet may be provided with a rod at the edge thereof opposite to the edge at which it is applied to the supporting-rod, and by reducing the ends of rods 6 it will be seen that annular shoulders are formed, which prevent the rods from endwise displacement between the disks.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
