Be it known that 1, JOHN LANDAU, Jr., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Car-Fender, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to car-fenders such as shown and described in the Letters Patent of the United States No. 589,660, granted to me September 7, 1897.
The object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved car-fender ar ranged to safely land and retain any object struck by the fender-b asket, to permit of conveniently folding the fender when not in use, and to allow quick and convenient transfer of the fender-basket from one end of the car to the other.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement as applied. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of the basket locked to the lever-frame, the cross-bar of the link of the basket being shown in section. Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view of the hinged connection between the back and bottom of the basket and Fig. 5 is a sectional plan view of the locking device for locking the basket to the lever-frame, the section being on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3.
On the platform A of the car are secured brackets B, on which is fulcrumed a leverframe C, pivotally connected with rods D, mounted to slide in suitable bearings carried by the brackets B, the rods being pressed on by springs E to allow a rearward swinging motion of the lever-frame C. The arrangement so far described is similar to the one shown in the Letters Patent above referred to, so that further description of the same is not deemed necessary.
On the lever-frame O is removably held a basket F, consisting of a back F and a bottom F pivotally connected at its rear end at F to the lower end of the back F, as will be readily understood by reference to the drawings. The bottom F is pivotally connected at its sides with the side arms of a U-shaped brace F extending upwardly and rearwardly and having its middle portion adapted to engage recesses formed in bars F secured to the back F at the rear face thereof, thus forming parts of the back, at the same time reinforcing the back.
. In order to hold themiddleportion of the brace F against accidental disconnection from the bars F locking-catches F are provided pivoted on the 'bars F and arranged in the 'form of hooks hooking over the middle portion of the brace F, as plainly illustrated in Fig. 3. The bars F are provided with hooks F (see Fig. 3) for hooking onto pins C, projecting inwardly from the upper ends of the lever-frame C, and the lower ends of the leverframe O, as well as the lower ends of the bars- F", are provided with registering apertures adapted to be engaged by a locking-pin Or (see Figs. 3 and 5) for securely locking the basket F to the lever-frame C.
Each of the pins G is preferably hung on a chain G, attached to the corresponding bar F, so that the pin is always within convenient reach of the operator for placing it in position when fastening the basket F to the lever-frame C or for conveniently withdrawing the pin whenever it is desired to disconnect the basket F from the lever-frame O with a view to remove the basket from one end of the car to the other, it being understood that a lever-frame O and brackets B are arranged on each end of the car, so that one basket may suffice for use on either end of the car.
The bottom F of the basket F stands a desired distance above the track, as plainly illustrated in the drawings, it being understood that the spring-pressed rods D, con nected with the lever-frame O, on which the fender F is hooked, hold the fender-basket in the position mentioned.
To permit of setting the basket F into the desired position to bring the bottom F a certain distance above the road-bed, the follow ing device is provided: The back F is en gaged at its lower middle portion by a hook H on one end of a chain H, connected at its other end with a lever I, fulcrumed at I on a bracket J, secured to the under side of the car-platform A, at or near the middle thereof. The upper end of the lever I is provided with an elongated slot 1 engaged by a pin K, projecting from a hand-lever K, extending upwardly through a slot in the platform A, so that the upper end of the hand-lever K is within the control of the motorman or attendant of the car.
On the hand-lever K is secured a lug or tooth K adapted to be engaged by a notched foot-lever L, fulcrumed on the platform A and under the control of the motorman or attendant of the car. A spring N, attached to the platform, presses the lever L so as to hold the free end thereof in an u permost position within convenient reach 0 the foot of the motorman. In order to set the front end of the basket-bottom F farther from or nearer to the track-surface, it is only necessary for the attendant to swing the hand-lever K either forward for swinging the bottom F upward or rearward for swinging the bottom F downward nearer to-the track. It is understood that during the setting of the'basket F, as described, the foot-lever L is held pressed to allow free forward and backward movement of the hand-lever K, and after the basket is set to the desired position the footlever L is released to,lock the hand-lever K in position against accidental movement. In case the motorman notices an object in the path of the car-fender he swings the handlever K rearward in the direction of the arrow 0., (see Fig. 2,) so as to impart a swinging mo tion to the lever I, which by the chain H imparts a rearward swinging motion to the fender F and its lever-frame C against the tension of the springs E to bring the bottom F of the fender into a lowermost position, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, so that the front end of the bottom F is close to the track, and consequently even the smallest object struck by the car-fender is not liable to pass under the fender, but into the basket. In case the motorman does not pull the handlever K back, as described, it is evident that by yieldingly mounting the fender F and its lever-frame O, as described, the same will readily swing rearwardly when striking a person standing on the track, and the fender and its spring-frame will yield, owing to the connection with the spring-pressed rods D. Thus in either case the object struck by the car-fender is safely landed in the basket and is retained therein to prevent the object from being run over by the car.
When it is desired not to use the fender, the hooks or latches F are disconnected from the middle portion of the brace F and then the said middle portion is disconnected from the notches in the bars F 5 and the brace F is pulled up, so as to swing the bottom F up into a closed or folded position against the back F. The middle portion of the brace F is then hooked onto a hook O, secured to the dashboard of the car, as plainly shown in Fig. l, to lock the basket in a folded position. The fender takes u very little room when in a folded position, t us allowing the string of moving cars in a comparatively small space in the car-barn.
The car-fender shown and described is simple and durable in construction, is not liable to get easily out of order, and can becheaply manufactured.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A car-fender comprising a lever-frame fulcrumed on the car-body, a basket removably connected with the said lever-frame, spring-pressed rods pivotally connected with the said lever-frame, and a manually-controlled device for imparting a swinging motion to the said lever-frame and basket to bring the forward end of the basket the desired distance relative to the track.
2. A car fender comprising a springpressed lever-frame fulcrumed on the carbody, a basket having its frame removably hung on the said lever-frame, means for looking the said basket-frame to the said leverframe, and means for swinging the leverframe and basket to move the forward end of the basket to and from the track.
3. A car-fender provided with a basket comprising a back, a bottom pivotally connected with the said back, and a brace pivotally connected with the said bottom and removably connected with the said back.
4. A car-fender provided with a basket comprising a back, a bottom pivotally connected with the said back, a brace made U shape and pivotally connected at its side arms with the sides of the said bottom, the middle portion of the brace being adapted to engage bearings on the said back, and means for locking the middle portion to the bearin s.
T6. A car-fender comprising a lever-frame on the car, a basket having a back, the side members of which are formed with hooks adapted to hook onto pins on the said leverframe, and locking-pins engaging registering apertures in the said lever-frame and the said side members.
6. A car-fender provided with a basket comprising a back having side members provided with notches near the upper end, a bottom pivotally connected with the lower end of the said back, and a U-shaped brace having its side arms pivotally connected with the sides of the said bottom, the middle portion of the said brace being adapted to engage the said notches.
7. A car-fender provided with a basket comprising a back having side members provided with notches near the upper end, a bottom pivotally connected with the lower end of the said back, a U-shaped brace having its side arms pivotally connected With the sides of the said bottom, the middle portion of the said brace being adapted to engage the said notches, and a hook fixed on the car and adapted to be engaged by the said brace to hold the bottom in a folded position.
8. A car-fender provided With a basket comprising a back having side members rovided with notches near the upper end, a ottom pivotally connected With the lower end of the said back, a U-shaped brace having its side arms pivotally connected With the sides of the said bottom, the middle portion of the said brace being adapted to engage the said notches, and hooks hinged on the said side arms and adapted to hook onto the middle portion of the said brace to lock the latter in place.
