In the modied form of switch-stand shown in Fig. 3 the lock 10 is connected by link 18 to one arm of a bell-crank lever 19, the latter being provided with a do 20 for coperation with a notched standar 21, by means of which the workin parts areheld m normal or given position. n this form of switch-stand the switch-point 3 is adapted to be moved by means of a lever 22, which may be ,connected to the switch-throwing rod or bar 4 in any manner. It is to be understood that when 'the switch-point is locked the signal cannot be operated, and it is imperative that the switch-point be fully closed before the signal may be thrown from danger to safety The signal-operating mechanism is connected directly with the lock 10. Hence movement ol the lever causes a corresponding movement of the si nal, and the operator ma 1 be informed o the condition of the switc by observation of the signal. Should anything prevent the closing of the switch-point, the signal cannot be moved to indicate safety.
It is contemplated to operate the signal from independent switch-stands, and to admit of this result the construction illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7 has been devised. In these figures, 23 represents a Hat piece of metal running through a casing or closed metal box 24. Lugs or boxes 25 and 26 show a clear position and said signal 26, as stated, is adapted to be operated by means of two switch-stands independently of cach other. When signal is thrown to indicate danger, lug or dog 25 bein connected, as shown, pulls downward the at piece of metal bar 23, and said lu striking arm 27 throws arm 28 in a diagona position or opposite side of the casing or box. This is for' the pur ose that in case both switches and both ugs or dogs 25 pulled down the first switch reversed to normal position has no effect on signal, from the fact that arm 28 being in diagonal position throws lug 25 out of notch 29 in rod or plate 23 and lets it go to the top, where it passes between a sprin 3U and the part 23, and when the last switc 1 is placed in normal position said sprino` pushes said lug in the notch of the part 23. tit will be observed that when lug 25 is pushed to the top that the arm 27 and the arin 28 on opposite side of the box are returned to normal position, thereby permittingr lug 25 to be engaged with the plate or clement 23, whereby the signal may be caused to indicate safety" or a clear track.
[n Fig. 8 is indicated a different form of bracket where the handle portion 7 of the operating lever operates in. The handle portion 7 of thc operating-lever when rotated to open the switch and placed in the notch thereof to hold said switch in position, also enters notch 3l oll the bracket 32, so that the downward movement of handle will not interfere with the said clasp or bracket. It will be observed that the provision of the part 32 enables the part 16 to be dispensed with. This part also prevents closing of the switch and locks the same in position without first throwing the signal to safety With the open part 16 the operator is enabled to throw the handle portion 7 high enough so it will pass underneath the lower prong o'r' the part 1Q, thereby permitting the stand to be operated same as though the invention were not applied thereto, the difference being that the signal remains a? deugen This also appiles to the modified form of stand indicated in Fig` 5.
The' operating-wires 33 are suspended, as indicated at 34, thereby enabling the signal to be operated at a great distance from the switch-stand. A spririg-compensator 35 is interposed in thc length of each wire 33 to allow for contraction and expansion, the tension of the spring being such as to prevent any slack in the wire and yet prevent operation of the signal should the wire contract under a reduced temperature. A tension device 36 allows proper adjustment ofthe springcompcnsators. it is noted that aD-rail is operated by movement oi' levers and. that the invention may bc adapted to low and high stands now in use, thereby obviating the necessity of providingnewstands in the installation of the invention on any railway system.
At a convenient point in the track a trip mechanism is located to effect a sounding of an alarm on a train to apprise the engineer of impending danger in the event of the dangersignal not being observed either through fog or by oversight. This trip mechanism consists of a bar 37 and trips 38 attached thereto, the trips 3H normallv occupying an inoperative position, but w lich are thrown into a working position when the danger-signal is set. An operating-wire 33 is connected to one arm of a bell-crank 39, the other arm of said bell-crank being attached to the bar 37. l/Vhen the wire 33 is drawn upon toset thcsignal to danger," the bar-His at tln` same time operated and causes the trips 38 to project into the path of an operating device mounted upon the locon'iotive or other convenient portion of the train, so as to produce a signal and warn thc engineer of danger. When the signal returns to safetyf'the bar 37 likewise assumes a normal position and causes the trips 38 to be thrown out of action.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is-- 1. In a railway-switch, the combination of the switch-point, a bar arranged transversely of the switch and having an end portion cxtcnding beneath the switch-point and the rail adjacent thereto and provided with a stop, a bell-crank lever hawing one arm connected to said bar and its outer arm connected to a signal, and means l'or operating said IGO ITO
