Description

No. 819,061. PATENTED MAY 1, 1906.
H. J. GUTTMAN.
TELEPHONE SWITCH HOOK.
APPLICATION FILED NOV.25, 1905.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HARRY J. GUTTMAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR- TO AUTOMATIC ELECTRIC OOBIPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TELEPHONE SWITCH-HOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
i'atented May 1,
citizen of the United States of America, and
a resident of Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Iniprovement in Telephone SwitcliI-looks, of which the following is a s ecilication.
My invention contempl ates a simplified and improved form of switch-hook for suqporting telep honwreceivers in the usual an wellknown manner.
Objects of my invention are the provision of an improved construction and arrangement whereby the entire switch-hook may be constructed from a single sheetmetal blank. the provision of a strong and at the same time light and simple construction. of switch-hook, and the provision of certain details and features of improvement tending to increase the general elficiency and serviceabil i ty of a device of this )articular character.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1. a perspective of a telephone switch-hook embodying the principles of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of the sheet-metal blank from which the switch-hook is made. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line 3 3 in Fig. 2, but sh0wing the blank folded upon itself.
.he blank or stamping shown in Fig. 2 is first made in any suitable known or approved manner and out of any suitable material such, for example, as sheet-brass. The ends a a e perforated in the manner shown for the purpose of reducing the weight of the switchhoo and giving a. neat and ornamental a ipearance to the switch-hook. After the blank has been made its body portion 1) is then folded longitudinally, as shown in Fig. 3 and as shown more clearly in Fig. 1, thus providing a neck or arm which connects the .prongs or end portions a with the laterally ient attaching portion 0. After the blank or stamping is thus folded longitudinally the prongs or end portions a can be spread apart and given the desired curvature or shape, and then the rear end or attaching portion 0 can be bent around so as to extend at a right angle to the body portion b. It will be observed that this attaching portion 0 is provided with a couple of screw-holes or boltholes or rivet-holes (7, thus providing for the ready attachment of the hook to the balance of the hook-switch. After the hook has been properly formed in the manner described it is then subjected to a bulfing process and then electroplated, and the article is then read for use.
It is a matter of common knowledge that a metal article made as-described. is much more easily cleaned and prepared for plating than if made by casting or otherwise. In other words, it will be seen that I provide a telephone switch-hook which is constructed from a single integral sheet-metal blank.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. A telephone switch-hook constructed from a single integral sheet-metal blank bent and folded into shape to rovide a neck or body of double thickness, a hook or supporting prongs of single thickness, and attaching means of single thickness.
2. A tele hone switch-hook constructed from a blanlc having a main or body ortion 71 adapted to be folded longitudinal y, and having end portions a adapted to be spread apart to form the prongs of the completed switch-hook, together with a rear portion 0 adapted to be bent laterallv to provide the switch-hook with a laterally-projecting attaching portion.
3. A tale hone switch-hook constructed from a sing e integral piece of sheet metal folded longitudinally to provide a neck or arm portion, and bent or spread apart at its forward end for the purpose of providing the switch-hook with two prongs, and having a perforated rear and laterally-eatending attaching portion.
4. As an article of manufacture, a sheetmetal blank adapted to be converted into a telephone switch-hook, said blank having a body portion adapted to be folded longitud nally u on itself, and having end portions adapte to be spread apart and curved suitably to provide the com letcd switch-hook with prongs, together with a perforated portion adapted to oe bent at a right angle to gether with an attachin portion 0 integral Iq form an attaching portion for the completed Withone layer of the sai portion b and proswitch-hook. vided with screw or rivet holes d.
5. As an article of manufacture, a tele- Signed by me at Chicago, Cook county, phone switch hook comprising a neck or Illinois, this 21st day of November, 1905. body portion 1) consisting of sheet metal HARRY J. GUTTMAN. folded longitudinally upon itself, end por- Witnesses: tions (1 integral with the said portion 6 and EDW. D. FALES,
constituting prongs for the switch-hook, to- R. H. BURFEIND.
