CHARLES TQLLNER, OF 'PULASKI, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 81,844, dated September 1, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN SMOKING-PIPES.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, CHARLES TbLLNER, of Pulaski, in the county of Oswego, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Smoking-Pipes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, ref
erence being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, which drawing represents a vertical central section of this invention.
This invention relates to a smoking-pipe, which is madeof clay, mixed with some combustible material, such as wood or coal; then baked, and afterwards saturated with some unctuous substance, such as oil, grease, or also glue, and finally put into closed mufiles, and carbonized in such a manner that a pipe is obtained which combines the advantages of" a. common clay pipe with the absorbent qualities of a carbon pipe.
A represents my pipe, which may be made in any desirable form or shape.
It is moulded'of clay, which is mixed with ground wood, coal, bone-black, or-other combustible material,
and then baked in the usual manner. After the pipe has become perfectly hard, I saturate the same with some unctuous material, such as oil, grease, or also glue, and then I place the same into a closed mufile, and heat it so as to effect carbonization.
By these means a clay pipe is obtained, which is of superior strength and durability, and which combines the absorbent qualities of a common carbon pipe with the advantages of an ordinary clay pipe.
Having thus described my invention, I disclaim the invention patented by G. Lautenschlager and G. L. Gott, January 17, 1866, and reissued, February 11, 1868.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is g A smoking-pipeor bowl, consisting of clay, which, in the process of manufacture, is successively baked, saturated with unctuous matter, and carbonized, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
This specification signed by me, this second day of July, 1868.
CHARLES TOLLNER.
