Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES EDWARD CHAPMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Fort Edward, in the county of Washington and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Pulp-Screen, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a construction of screen especially adapted for screening paper-pulp, wherein as the fluid leaves the pulp upon a screen the slivers will be constantly tossed up and down, separating and drying them.
Another purpose of the invention is to provide for such action upon the slivers through the simultaneous contrary movement of se-' ries of paddles located beneath the screen proper and independent thereof, which paddles operate in a body of water also beneath the screen proper.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal central vertical section of the device, showing the paddles in two positions. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the device, the paddles being in normal or straight position; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken practically on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
l A box-body A is employed which is given suitable dimensions, being open at the top, but otherwise closed. Said body is preferably of rectangular shape and is provided with an interior marginal flange 10, which extends along the back and at each side to the front a predetermined distance below the upper edge of the body, and said body is supported by suitable legs a.
An inner casing is provided for the body separated therefrom a desirable distance, and said inner casing consists of side pieces 11, extending down from the inner edges of the side flanges 10, stopping short of the bottom of the body, thus providing openings 12 at such points, and a rear member 13, which extends from the inner edge of the rear flange 10 to the bottom of the body, as is shown in Fig. 1, forming thereby a rear pocket 14, which is in communication with the spaces between the sides of the inner casing and the sides of the body.
A trough 15, open at the top, is erected at the upper rear portion of the body, having an overflow-opening 16 in its rear Wall, as shown in Fig. 1, connected with a pipe 17, leading to any desired point of discharge. An opening 18 is made in the rear wall of the body A, establishing communication between the pocket 14 and the trough 15, and the flow of liquid through said opening 18 is regulated by agate 19, mounted to slide in the trough 15, said gate being attached to a stem 20, having a threaded upper end, and this stem passes loosely through a bracket 21, located at the rear of the body. The gate is raised and lowered by the manipulation of a thumb nut 22, located on the threaded end of'the stem and having bearing against the bracket 21, as is shown in Fig. 1.
A screen B is suitably supported by the flange 10, and at the front of the body A, as is shown in Fig. 1, and just below the screen within the inner casing of the body vertical paddles or blades are located, having trunnions 23 at their upper ends, mounted to turn in the sides 11 of said inner casing, and'these blades or paddles extend nearly to the bot tom of the body A. The blades or add-les are in two series O and C, said paddles or blades of the two series being alternately placed, and preferably they are at equal distances apart. The paddles or blades of the series O are connected by pins an at their lower ends with an operating-bar 24, located at the bottom portion of one side of the body A between its side member and the opposing side member 11 of the inner casing, and the blades or paddles of the other series O are connected at their lower ends in similar manner With a second operating-bar 25, correspondingly located to the bar 24 at the opposite side of the body. Each operating-bar 24 and 25 is provided with an upwardly-extending stud 26, and the stud of the bar 24 is pivotally connected with a horizontal link 27, and the stud of the bar 25 is pivotally connected with a corresponding link 27 The link 27 is pivotally connected with the inner end of a second link 28, and the link 27 is likewise pivotally attached to a second link 28. The links 28 and 28 are passed out at the forward end of 5 tached to opposite sides of the center of disks 32 and 32, which disks are secured at the ends of a shaft 33, journaled in suitable bearings 34, located at the outer ends of arms 35, extending from the front end of the boxbody, and at the central portion of the shaft 33 a pulley 36 is secured, adapted for connection with any source of power. The pitmen 30 and 30 are connected with the disks 32 and 32 through the medium of studs 31 31 extending outwardly from the outer faces of the said disks, as is shown in Fig. 2.
It will be observed that when the shaft 33 'is rotated the pitmen 30 and 30 operate simultaneously in opposite directions, one pitman being forced inward while the other pitman is drawn outward, and thus alternately the one operating-bar is pushed inward and the other is drawn outward, thus causing the paddles of the two series 0 and C to operate to and from each other, as is indicated in Fig. 1. Therefore when the pulp in liquid form is poured onto the screen B the liquid passes down into the box body A, and the blades or paddles operating in this liquid causes first, for example, a suction drawing the slivers of the pulp to the said screenfand then said paddles create an upward current, which forces the slivers up from the screen, so that during the operation of the device the pulp is separated from the liquid, and at the same time the slivers on the screen are tossed up and down and kept constantly in motion. Any overplus of liquid will find its way out through the opening 18 into the trough l5 and from thence to any point of discharge through the connected pipe 17.
I Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a pulp-screen, a'box-body, a screen supported at the upper portion of the said body, paddles or blades pivoted in the body at their upper ends beneath the said screen, the said blades or paddles being in two series and the series being alternately placed, and means for reciprocating the series of paddles simultaneously in opposite directions.
2. In a pulp-screen, a box-body, a screen located within the said box-body adjacent to its top, a casing located below the screenin the box-body, comprising side sections which stop short of the bottom of the box-body and an end section which extends to the bottom of said boxbody, two series of paddles or blades pivoted Within the casing at their uper ends, the paddles or blades of the series being alternately arranged, and means for rocking the said blades or paddles simultaneously in opposite directions.
3. In a pulp-screen, a box-body, a screen within the said body located adjacent to the top, a casing located in the box-body below the screen, comprising side sections which extend to the forward end of the box-body from a point near the rear and terminate short of the bottom of the box-body, and a rear section connecting the side sections and extending to the bottom of the box-body, forming a rear pocket in communication with the spaces between the sides of the body and the side sections of the casing, a trough located at the rear of the box-body, an o ening leading into the said pocket, a gate or the said opening, said trough being provided with an overflow-outlet, series of blades or paddles pivoted within the said casing at their upper ends, the blades of the series being alternately placed, and means for simultaneously rocklng the blades of each series in an opposite direction to the other.
4. In a pulp-screen, a box-body, a screen located in the said box-body, arms extending from the said screen at one end, a shaft journaled in bearings carried by the arms, disks secured to the said shaft, a pulley also secured to the shaft, two series of blades or addles pivoted at their upper ends within t e boxbody below the screen, the blades or paddles of the series being alternatelyplaced, an operating-bar at each side of the body, one bar being connected to the lower end of one series of paddles or blades and the other bar being correspondingly attached to the blades or paddles of the other series, links connected with the said operating-bars, pitmen connected with the said links, said pitmen being pivotally attached to the said disks on the said shaft at opposite sides of the centers of the disks.
