Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. LANYoN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Shady Creek, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in toys.
The particular type of toy is one in which an aerial projectile is forcibly directed against a movable object.
The detail construction will appear in the course of the following description, in Which reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, like numerals designating like parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a bottom perspective view showing the operating mechanism. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the mechanism for moving the target upon the discharge of the projectile.
Referring specifically to the accompanying drawings, my improved toy comprises a base 1, which is supported upon side walls 2 and end walls 3. A receptacle is thus formed which is bottomless. Located at the rear of the base 1 is an ornamental setting 4, provided with an opening 5 approximately centrallylocated therein, through which projects a target 6 of any desired construction, the head of a human figure being shown.
The operating mechanism (shown in Fig. 2) embodies a longitudinal rod 7, mounted on the underneath surface of base 1, said rod 7 being formed with a bent end 8. The other end of said rod 7 is loosely united, as at 9, to a crank-shaft 10, fulcrumed in bearings 11, secured to the base 1. The crank-shaft 10 has loose and pivotal connection with a rod 12, extending vertically through the base 1, the said rod having pivotal connection at its other end with a block 13, upon which is mounted the target 6. Said block 13 is loosely supported u on a post 14, mounted upon the base 1. T e post 14 is formed with an inclined upper face 15, the edge of which, as at 15, serves for a loose fulcrum for the block 13, the latter being held in position by a retractile spring 16, having its ends secured to said block and said base. A substantially transversely-disposed rod 17 has loose and pivotal connection adjacent its end, as at 18,
with the bent end of rod 7, and the rod 19 is attached to said rod 17 and passes through the base 1, as at 20. A toy figure 21 is rigidly mounted upon the bent end of the rod 19, one arm 22 of said figure 21 being adapted to normallysupport the projectile or marble 23. The rod 17 has at an approximately central point loose and pivotal connection with a short-length longitudinal rod 24, extending through the front wall 3 of the base 1 and terminating in an enlarged head 25. The other end of the rod 17 has connection with the retractile spring 26, which is secured at its other end, as at 27, to the base 1. Mounted upon the underneath surface of base 1 adjacent to the end of said rod 17 is a catch 28, which is preferably constructed of sheet metal. The rod 17 is adapted to be moved upon its fulcrum 18 by the rod 24, and the movement of the said rod 17 in either direction is limited by a U-shaped bracket 29, secured to the underneath surface of the base 1. A button 30 is mounted on the base 1 adjacent to extremity of rod 17 and projects through said base, bearing against the extremity of said rod when the latter has been moved by the rod 24.
In operation when it is desired to set the figure 21 in position to discharge the projectile 23 from its arm 22 the rod 24 is manually drawn forward, swinging the rod 17 upon its fulcrum 18 until the extremity thereof engages the end of and is held by the catch 28. The bent end of rod 19 will likewise move so that the figure 21, rigidly mounted upon the extremity 20 thereof, will be set in the proper position. When the rod 17 is drawn forward, a slight reciprocating motion will be imparted to the rod 7, which will in turn move the crank-shaft 10, so as to lower the target in its position in the opening 5 by the depression of the connecting-rod l2 and block 13. When it is desired at this stage to discharge the projectile 23, the button 30 is depressed, so as to lower the extremity of the rod 17 until it clears the catch 28, at which time the spring 27 will act to draw said rod rearwardly and swing the figure 21, the force of which discharges the projectile 23. Simultaneous with this action the rod 7 is likewise moved rearwardly, the crank-shaft rotated slightly, and the rod 12 raised, thereby raising the target. The action of the rod 7 is further facilitated by the tension of the spring 16, acting through the several constituent elements.
It is obvious that several minor changes may be made Without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as defined in t e appended claim.
Having fully described my invention, I claim- A figure toy embodying a housing, a plate disposed at the rear thereof, a target proj ecting through said plate, mechanism mounted beneath the housing for raising and lowering said target, and mechanism for discharging a projectile against said target, embodying a toy figure constituting a movable projectileholder, a member movably mounted on said housing and extending therethrough and having rigid connection with said holder, means for locking said member against movement, means for imp arting movement to said member, and'means for releasing said member from said locking means.
