Wi l'umaea' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 17, 1906.
Application filed May 10, 1905. Serial No- 259,714.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER V. JAooBs, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Salem, in the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brooders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to brooders for raising poultry; and it has for its object the improvement of devices of this nature, especially in relation to the arrangements forheating same and also the construction thereof, whereby the parts may be dismembered for the purpose of cleaning.
The construction and advantages of my invention Will be fully explained hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view in elevation of my invention, Fig. 2, a top view of the interior of the chick-chamber; Fig. 3, a cross-section of the brooder with the roof in position; Fig. 4, a detailed view, partly in section, of the heating-drum and lamp; and Fig. 5 a detail view showing a fragmental view of the brooder-casing with the platform and runway in side elevation.
In the drawings similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
My brooder i shown to be rectangular in plan view with the front wall A, the rear wall B, and side walls C C; but it will be understood that any other shape may be substituted, if desired, without changing the spirit of 'my invention. The front wall A is higher than the rear wall B, and the side walls 0 are formed with a slanting upper edge, as shown, so as to give a pitch to the roof D, which is provided with transverse cleats E, adapted to seat just inside of the walls A and B to hold the roof in place, said roof being supported in the middle by a transverse beam F, supported in side walls 0 by means of grooves c therein, so that the beam may be removed when it is desired to clean the brooder, as will be described hereinafter. A curtain f is secured to the beam F, as shown, to divide the chamber inclosed by the walls A, B, and G into two compartments G and G at the front and rear of the brooder.
H represents the floor of'the chambers, which is made in one piece and removably supported by means of brackets h, secured to the walls. This construction admits of the removal of the floor for cleaning when desired, a feature that is very necessary in such devices, as the life of the brooding chickens depends upon the sanitation secured in the construction of the brooder. That portion of the floor that is in the chamber G is formed with an opening I, in which is seated a heating-drum J, by means of an annular flange K, the part L thereof below the flange K and extending underneath the floor H being provided with a door M to admit of ac cess to a lamp N, the floor of the drum J being provided with holes to admit air to the lamp. The part of the drum J above the flange K is smaller in diameter than the part L below it, as shown at O, and has extending laterally therefrom pipes P.
Q represents caps slidably mounted in holes in the side walls 0 Oto fit over the free ends of pipes P and provided with o enings g to admit of egress of the products 0 combustion from lamp N. This construction of pipes and caps prevents the gases from the lamp from getting into the chambers G and G and at the same time provides for removing the drum when it is desired to clean the brooder, as above described. The Walls 0 C are also provided with openings R in the chamber G for ventilation.
S represents a Window in the front wall A, and openings covered by sliding doors U, opening to a platform V with runway W to the ground.
X represents a sliding door in the rear wall tocover an o ening Y therein opposite the door M in the ower part L of the drum J.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In combination with a brooder having inclosing walls, a heating-drum seated on the floor thereof, pipes leading from said drum toward the inclosing walls, and caps slidably mounted in the inclosing walls adapted to receive the free ends of said pipes and provided with outlet-openings, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a brooder comprising inclosing walls, a floor secured to said walls so as to leave a space above and below the same a heatingdrum secured in said floor and extending above and below the same, pipes leading from said drum toward the inclosing walls, caps slidably mounted in said walls and ada ted to receive the free ends of said pi es, said caps being provided with lateral out etopenings, and a flexible partition suitably suspended and dividing the chamber above IIO the floor into two compartments, substantially as shown and described.
3. A brooder comprising a front all, a rear Wall of less height than the front Wall, and side Walls having their top edges slanting from the top edge of the front Wall, to the top edge of the rear Wall, brackets secured to the said Walls, the floor mounted on said brackets and having a hole therein, the heating-drum seated on said hole, pipes extending laterally from said drum, caps slidably mounted in the side Walls to receive the free ends of the said pipes and having outlet-openings therein, said side Walls also provided with ventilating-openings and vertical grooves, a transverse beam mounted in said grooves, a curtain secured to said beam and extending to the floor aforesaid, a roof removably mounted on said Walls and beam and transverse cleats on said roof to seat inside of said front and rear Walls, substantially as shown and described.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
WALTER V. JACOBS.
