Description
PATENTED APR. 10, 1906. x
M. H. WINN.
TAG 0R LABEL.
APPLICATION FILED APR.26.1905.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 10, 1906.
Application filed April 26, 1905. Serial No. 257,537.
T0 on whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARJORIE H. WINN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tags or Labels, of which the following is a specification.
In libraries it is common to label the books both for classification and ready reference. This is usually effected by affixing the labelslip to the books by means of an adhesive, such as paste or gum. It is difficult to remove such labels when required for any purpose without marring or otherwise defacing the books.
The primary object of this invention is the provision of a label or tag which may be attached to a book in conspicuous position for prominent display of the designating matter and which may be readily and quickly detached therefrom to admit of reclassification or for other purpose. v
The invention also aims to utilize the label as a protector to prevent the usual wear on the lower end of the book incident to sliding the same upon shelving in vertical position.
The invention further provides alabel comprising a clip having a display member and a slip held to the clip by means of one of the tongues of the latter and said dsplay member, said slip bearing the designating or other matter desired.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a book provided with a label constructed in accordance with and embodying the essential features of the invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the label. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the blank from which the clip portion of the label is formed. Fig. 4 is a detailview of the clip-blank with the label-slip holder bent into operative position. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the clip complete, the label-slip being omitted. Fig. 6 is a transverse section of the label, showing the parts 011 a larger scale.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The label as a whole comprises a clip 1 and slip 2, the latter bearing the designating or other desired matterto be displayed. The clip 1 is preferably constructed of metalsuch as aluminium, brass, copper, German silver, or the like-or may be formed of any suitable material, such as celluloid or any of the pyroXyli-ne compounds.
In the formation of the clip 1 a suitable blank is provided, as shown in Fig. 3. This blank in the first step of manufacture is cut longitudinally, as shown at 6, producing three tongue portions, (designated4 and 5.) After being thus cut or slit the next step in the manufacture is the bending of the middle tongue 5 upwardly or returning it against the main portion of the blank, as shown at Fig. 4, and the neXt step is then to bend the tongues 4 upon themselves, so as to produce the structure illustrated in Fig. 5, wherein is illustrated three upwardly-extending tongues namely, a middle tongue 5 and the two side tongues 4, the latter projecting above the former, as shown. Preferably the tongues 4 are bent on a lower lane than the tongue 5 for a purpose present y described. This constitutes the clip.
Coacting with the clip to produce the com plete label is a label-slip 2, which is preferably secured to the clip by having one of its ends turned over the upper edge of the tongue 5, thence around underneath said tongue, with its other end turned over around the upper edge of the portion 3 to face the first-named end. This is best seen in Figs. 2 and 6. After the slip has been placed around the clip 1 as just described it may be secured firmly by pinching together the edges of the parts 3 and 5, so as to clench the slip, or if the clip is made of resilient material spring action thereof may be depended upon for this purpose. In securing the label to the book the tongues 4 are passed into the binding, and the latter is received between the middle tongue 5 and the outside tongues 4, the three tongues constituting the clip members and serving between them to securely hold the clip to the book. The part 3 is disposed outwardly in operative position, and thus forms a display member which has the additional function of coacting with one of the tongues 5 to securely hold the label-slip in place. To prevent lateral movement of the slip, it is preferably the width of the space between the two side tongues 4, so that the latter serve as side retaining-walls therefor. While the label may be secured. to the book at either the upper or lower end thereof, it is preferable to secure it to the lower end, for in so doing the lower ends of the tongues 4, being in a plane below the lower edge of the tongue 5 ,constitute feet u on which the book may be slid into and out of shelves on its edge, thereby protecting the binding, and at the same time this construction also avoids any frictional wear on the labelslip, as the latter is held clear of contact with the surface of the shelving.
It will be seen that I have provided a label which in its complete form comprises a clip of integral construction formed with three tongues-namely, a middle tongue 5 and two side tongues 4between which tongues the back edge of the book-binding is inserted to secure the device to the book, and also formed with a lip 3, which not only constitutes a display member for the slip, but coacts with the middle tongue 5 to securely hold the slip in place, as before described.
It is to be understood that the label is provided in various sizes to adapt it to books of different pro ortions. It is also to be understood that W 1ile the label is particularly designed for use in connection with books it is not the intention to restrict its application, as it may be employed in a general way for afiixing tags, labels, and kindred indexing articles to merchandise or goods of any character whatsoever.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is--- 1. A label comprising a clip provided with three upwardly-extending tongues, the two outer of which have their lower ends in a lower plane than the middle tongue, and means for securing a slip to the clip.
2. A label comprising a clip provided with tongues and a display member and a slip having its ends retained between the opposing edges of one of said tongues and said display member.
3. A label comprising a clip provided at its sides with retaining portions, and a middle portion, the side portions at their bends be ing in a lower plane than the lower end of the middle portion, and a slip secured to said middle portion and extending around underneath the same, the bends of the retaining portions constituting feet for the purpose of protecting the slip from abrasion.
4. A label comprising a clip provided with tongues and a display member and a slip having its end portions held between one of said tongues and said display member.
. 5. A label comprising a clip provided with a middle and two side tongues and a display the opposite edge of the clip and retained therebetween.
8. A label comprising a clip provided with a middle tongue and two side tongues projecting above the first-named tongue and a display member whose edge is parallel with the edge of the middle tongue and a slip having one end turned over the edge of said middle tongue and passed around the same with its other end turned over the opposite edge of the clip, said slip being retained between the two.
9. A label comprising a clip provided with three upwardly-extending tongues, substantially in linewith each other and a display member also extending upwardly substantially parallel to the tongues, and a slip passed around the middle portion of the clip with its ends pinched between the middle tongue and said display member.
10. A label comprising a clip provided with three u wardly-extending tongues, the two outer 0 which have their lower ends in a lower plane than the middle tongue, and means for securing a slip to the clip over the middle tongue for the purpose specified.
11. A label comprising a one-piece clip formed with an upwardly-extending member or lip 3, a middle upwardlyextending tongue 5, and two outer upwardly-extending tongues 4, all of said tongues facing said display memberv and a slip having one end turned inwardly over the upper edge of the tongue 5 passing around underneath said tongue and upwardly over the face of the lip 3 with its up per end inturned around the upper edge of said lip, the two ends of the slip being held between said coacting edges.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARJORIE H. WINN.
