Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NAPOLEON DU BRUL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Cutters, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates more particularly to the gage for the cutter; and it consists in so mounting the gage as to eliminate the vibra tion of the cutter to the gage, and thus obvi ate accidental displacement of the gage.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3, Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow.
Before my invention it was customary to fasten the gage by means of a screw in the groove of the frame of the cutter; but it has been found that the vibration of the constant working of the cutter in cutting off the cigars loosens the screw of the gage, such vibration being for the major part due to the rebound of the handle under the tension of its spring. This tendency of the gage to become unloosened is obviated by my invention by reason of the fact that the rod upon which the gage is fastened is for all purposes and intents independent of the frame, and therefore not subject to the vibration thereof.
I have for the purposes of illustrating my invention illustrated a cigar-cutter of wellknown construction, wherein 1 is the frame, provided with the usual groove 2, said frame having upon one end thereof a lug 3, upon which the handle 4 is pivotally mounted, said handle carrying the star-knife 5, which coacts with the knife-plate 6 in cutting the end of the cigar.
The handle is provided with a lateral-extending arm 7, carryin a cap 8 upon its outer end. 9 is a spring coi ed around the lateralextending arm 7, one end of which is firmly fastened in the cap 8, while the other end is attached to the lug 3.
10 is a gage-rod, one end of which is firmly secured to the lug 3 back of the frame 1 and spaced from said frame, the outer end of said rod bein free. 11 is the gage, having a perforated head 12, provided with a set-screw 13, said gage being slidably mounted upon the rod 10 and fixedly held in any position by means of said set-screw 13. The gage is is loosened by the action of the cutter-handle,
and it frequently happens that the cigarmakers are liable to cut the cigars different lengths before they discover that the gage of the cutter is loosened, which causes a great deal of trouble and annoyance in a large factory where they have hundreds of them in use, whereas by the construction of the gage shown in the accompanying drawings and above described the gage is not liable to be shaken loose at all, as the shock of snapping the handle against the frame does not tend to loosen the gage, inasmuch as the vibration from the frame is not transmitted to the. rod 10 by reason of the fact that the rod is fastened to the frame only at one end.
It will be seen from the above description and the illustration that by reason of the rod being secured at one end only it provides a flexible mounting for the gage, inasmuch as the outer end of the rod is free, whereby the rod is adapted to take up the vibrations of the machine.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a cigar-cutter of the character described, the combination of a frame, a springreturned handle mounted thereon, a rod secured only at one end to said frame, a gage slidably mounted on said rod, and a setscrew in said gage.
2. In a cigar-cutter of the character described, the combination of a frame having a groove therein, a spring-returned handle mounted on said frame, a rod secured only at one end to said frame, a gage slidably mounted on said rod and depending in said groove, and a set-screw in said ga e.
3. In a cigar-cutter o the character 'described, the combination of a frame, a springreturned handle mounted thereon, a rod secured only at one end to said frame and extending throughout the length of the frame and positioned parallel thereto, of a gage slidably mounted upon said rod and depending in the groove of the frame and a set-screw to lock said gage in the desired position upon said rod.
