T e invention relates to locks and latches for doors and the like; and its object'is to provide a new and im roved lock arranged to prevent unauthorize persons from unlocking the door or other part on'which the lock is used, the main bolt of the lock being held against retractionwhen the door is in a closed osition unless the operator has the proper gey or can turn the knob on the inside of the cor.
The invention consists of novel features and arts. and combinations of the same, as wille more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a rear face View of the improvement, the rear cover being removed. Fig. 2 is a like view of the same, showin the main and auxiliary bolts in retracted osition, parts being broken out. In the casing A, secured to the door B at the inside thereof, is mounted to slide the main bolt C, normally held in a projected position by springs D for the beveled head of the bolt to engage a keeper or striking-plate. E, secured to the jam of the door, as indicated in Fig. 3. The main bolt C is provided. with arallel guide-rods C, mounted to slide in a hearing A, attached to the post A of the easing A, and on the said guide-rods C are coiled the springs D, abutting with their forward ends on the head of the main bolt 0 and resting with theirrear ends on the said bearing A. The rear ends of the guide-rods C are connected with each other by a yoke C adapted to be engaged by the retracting mechanism for the main bolt C, the said retracting mechanism consisting of a cam F on a cam-plate F, having its hub F journaled in the casing A, the inner end of the hub having a lug n fitting a recess in the'inner end of the hub of a manually-controlled knob G, as lainly indicated in Fig. 4., and the outer en of the hub F is provided with a recess F, adapted to be en aged by the cam or bit H of a key-control ed tumbler-lock H of any approved construction, preferabl however, 0 the construction shown and escribed in the a plication for Letters Patent of the United States filed by me undereven date herewith, Serial No. 230,905. When the main bolt C is in a projected position, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 3, then it is locked in this position b a locking-lever I, fulcrumed on the post tioned, and having its forward end I abutting against 8. lug C projecting rearwardly from the head of the bolt 0. somewhat in advance of the bevel of the head of the main bolt C, so that on closing the door the beveled head J of the bolt J is acted on by the keeper or strikinglate E in advance of the head of the main olt C, and during this retracting movement of the auxiliary bolt J a swinging motion is imparted to the locking-lever I to disengage the end I from the lug C to unlock the main bolt C for the latter to be retracted when coming in contact with the keeper or striking-plate Econ closing the door.
The auxiliary bolt J is provided With a guide-rod J fitted to slide at its rearend in a hearing A*, held in the casing, (see Fig. 6,)
and on the said guide-rod J 2 is coiled a spring J resting with its inner end on the hearing A and pressin with its forward end on the head J of the iolt J to hold the latter normally in a projected position. 0n the auxiliary bolt J is held a irictiomroller J adapted to engage a projection K into. which proformed on the locking lever I, so that when the auxiliary bolt J is retracted upon coming in contact with the keeper E then'the roller J imparts a swin 'ng motion to the arm K, which by the lug 2? engaging the lug 1 imparts a swingin motion to the locking-lever I to swing the co end I thereof out of engagement with the lug C to allow of the retraction of the main bolt C by the head of the bolt coming in contact with the keeper immediately after the head J of the auxiliary bolt J has been pushed rearward by coming in contact with the keeper. (SJee Fig. 2.) Both bolts 0 and J are moved in a complete retracted position until the head of the bolt 0 finally passes into the opening of the keeper to allow the springs D to project the mam bolt into the o ening of the keeper to hold the door in a locked osition. The head J of the auxiliary bolt remains in contact with the face of the keeper E and isconsa quently not projected after the door is closed, but remains in the retracted position during the time the door is closed.
When the main bolt C is projected-forwardly to engage the keeper E on closingv the door, then the locking-lever I inunedi-. ately swings back to its normal position by the action of its spring I to reengage the end I with the lug G to hold the bolt C locked in a projected position. When the locking-lever I swin I s back to its normal pos sition, as mentioned, it imparts an upward swingin motion to the arm K, it bein n11- derstoo that during the retraction .oi the auxiliary bolt J its roller J has passed the projection K, and hence the arm K swings the auxiliary bolt J, in retracted eiaeoe back to a normal position with the springpressed lockin -lever. As the lockin lever I remains in t is locked position while the door is closed, it is evident that the main bolt cannot be retracted by an unauthorized person trying to tamper with the look, as it is necessary to first project the auxiliary bolt J and this cannot be done unless the door is opened and the head J of the said auxiliary bolt moves out of engagement with the face of the keeper E.
It is under-stood that the main bolt G can be retracted by a person havin the proper key inserted in the tumbler-lock H or b. a person on the inside of the door mani nlhting the knob G, as previously explaine 0n the head J of the auxiliary'bolt J is formed a shoulder J engaged b the back of the head of the main bolt C, so t t when the latter is retracted by mani ulating either the knob G or the tumbler-loo H then the auxiliary bolt J is retracted with the main bolt, owing to the latter being in engagement with the shoulder J (See Fig. 2.)
The free end I of the lockin dever I rests against the under side of the ng G of the main bolt during the time the latter is retracted, (see Fi 2,) and as soon as the bolt =0 shoots out the ever I swings back to its normal locking position by the action of the 5 spring 1 and in doing so it swin-gs the arm K back to a normal position, the roller J being in the rear oi the rejection K, permitting such movement oi the arm K. The latter has the clan ated slot to allow lengthwise movement 0 the arm at the time the auxiliary bolt J is projected outward by its spring J the roller J F then engaging the projection it to carry the arm K forwardly and slightl downwardly for the roller J 4 to finally clear the projection K immediately previous to the return of the locking-leverl and'the upwand swinging oi the arm K to normal po sition.
A snapcatch L is provided for engagement with the yoke C tsee dotted lines, Fig. 2) to permanently lock the main bolt C, and with it ositions. The snap-catch L is fulerurned at on the inside of the casing A and receives a swinging too motion from the slide L, provided with a knob L extending to the outside of the easing A. A spring-pressed dog N, fulcrumed on the slide, is adapted to engage either side of a lug A", formed on the casing A (see Fig. 5) to hold the slide in either a forward or rearward position. When the bolt C and the auxiliary bolt J are retracted and the knob L is pushed rearward, then the catch L is swung in position on the forward face of the yoke (see Fig. 2) to hold the bolt C, and with it the auxiliary bolt 5 permanently in retracted positions, it bein understood that the shoulder J does not afiow the bolt J to shoot out as long as themain bolt is retracted.

Having thus. described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a lock, the combination with a keeper, of a main bolt for engaging the keeper, a locking device for locking the main bolt in a projected position, and, an auxiliary bolt for engagement with the said keeper in advance of the main bolt when closing the door, the said auxiliary bolt actuating the said locking device, to unlock the main bolt for the latter to be in position to be retracted, the keeper being arranged to hold the said auxiliary bolt in a retracted position while the door is closed.

A look provided with a sprin pressed main bolt, a locking device'for ho ding thesaid main bolt against retraction, an auxiliary bolt extending beyond the main bolt when both bolts are projected, a pivoted arm arranged to receive a swinging motion from the said auxiliary bolt and to actuate the said locking device, and a manually-controlled retracting mechanism for the said main bolt, controlling the said locking device independent of the said auxiliary bolt and the said arm. a

A look comprising a keeper, a springpressed main bolt, a spring-pressed lockinglever for locking the said main bplt against retraction, an auxiliary bolt extending beyond the said main bolt when both bolts are projected, a pivoted arm controlled by the saida uxi liary bolt and engaging the said locking-lever, to swing the latter out of engagement with the main bolt, and a manual controlled retractin mechanism for retracting the said main olt independent of the said auxiliary bolt, the said retracting mechanism also controlling the said locking-lever independent of the auxiliary bolt and its pivoted arm.

a spring-pressed auxiliary bolt, and means for actuating the locking-lever from the auxiliary bolt to release the main bolt, when the auxiliary bolt is pushed inward.
7. A look provided with spring pressed main bolt, a pivoted and spring-pressed locking-lever for locking the main bolt projected, a spring-pressed auxiliary bolt, and a pivoted arm operated by the auxiliary bolt and actuating the locking-lever to release the main bolt when the said auxiliary bolt is pushed inward.
8. A look provided with-a main bolt, a locking device for the main bolt, an auxiliary bolt,'means for actuating the locking device from the auxiliary bolt when said bolt is ushed inward, and means for permanently lbclcing the main bolt and with it the auxiliary bolt in retracted positions.
9. A lock provided with a main bolt, an auxiliary bolt, and means for permanen ly locking the auxiliary bolt in a retracted position.
10; A look provided witha main bolt, a locking device for the said main bolt, to hold the latter against retraction, an auxiliary bolt for controlling the said locking device, and manually-controlled means for retracting the auxiliary bolt and looking it permanently in a retracted position and freeing the said locking device.
