Description

4TO ALL WHOM `IT MAY CONGEEN:
@einen faire atentbi'fire- J. C. MCAFEE, OF WEST ALEXADER, PENNSYLVANIA Letters Patent No; 81,520, dated August 25, 1868.
ilge sigehnle munt it in tlgesi @eine what mit mating mi nf tige sume.
Be it known that I, J. C. McAFEE, of West Alexander,in the county of Washington, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a newA and improved Compositionfor Grinding Marble; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference beinghad to the annexed drawings, making a part of. this specification.
The manner of applying the sheets or plates of my improved composition to planes or polishing-tools is represented by a longitudinal vertical section of such plane or tool, having `a detachable shoe or sole formed of the composition. i
`and removed, if desired.
In the drawings, A. represents the stock, and B the handle of the plane or tool, C being a water-chamber, in its front end, closed by a valve, c, operated by a spring, d, and thumb-piece, e.
F is the sole or shoe, attached to the bottom of the stock by any suitable means,so that it can be detached v Countersunk screws may be used for this purpose, if preferred, and the sole may consist of one piece, or several connected pieces of the composition. Y
The composition which I employ consists of pulverized Hint and gum-shellac, in equal parts, made into a paste, and allowed to dry, and becorerhard and rm. It may be moulded in moulds, or worked by hand to any form desired, sofas to give it the proper shape for polishing ornamental marble-work, of any pattern or design, and may vbeeastin solid blocks, or grinding-stones, if preferred.
A convenient form for manufacturing and applying it to use will be to cast or mould it in small strips or squares, as seen at s-s in the drawing, having an aperture or apertures, through which screws may be inserted, to confine the pieces to the tool in connection with which theyare to be employed.
This composition can be readily reduced to a plastic condition at any time, by moderately heating it upon acommon vstove or in hotwater, and, while in this condition, can be readily moulded by the workman, either in moulds or by hand, to anydesired form` .It does not require compression, but, `when cool, sets" hard and firm to a degree suicient for all purposes for which I employ it.
When applied in ythe manner described, itV grinds away marble faster than any substance heretofore .employed, while its own` wear is so slight as to be imperceptible.
By attaching it to. astoek, A, as described, it can be used much more conveniently than when otherwise handled, besides electing a saving in the material, and protectingithe fingers and hand from injury andsoiling. Having thus describedmy invention, what I claim las new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The composition above described, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
J. c. MQAFEE."
