citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county of Richmond, and State of New .York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inking Mechanisms, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying, drawin s, forming a part of the same.
his invention relates to certain improvements in inking mechanisms. Inking mechanisms as now ordinarily constructed usually include a plurality of formrollers and one or more distributing-rollers cooperating therewith. When the press is stopped, or when for any reason it is desirable to change the color of the ink, it is necessary to wash the ink from the rollers, and in order to do this it is desirable that the mechanism be arranged in'such a Way that the composition rollers maybe readily accessible. It has been customary heretofore to mount the vibrating distributing-rollers in a mov- 4 able frame, the frame being so constructed that when in operative position the distributers are in contact with the form-rollers, the frame being thrown u carrying the distrib uters away from the orm-rollers when it is desired to clean ,the rollers. In some constructions the frame has. been thrown upward by means of suitably-arranged springs,
the frame being locked inits operative position against the tension of these springs. These springs are, however, necessarily powerful, and great exertion is required on the part of the pressman to force the frame down after the rollers have been cleaned to move the distributers into their operative position. Power-operated devices for lifting this frame have also been devised; but they have been located above the frame, and because of this location they interfere with the operations of the pressman inrunnin the machine. Mechanisms have also been evised for lifting this frame, which include gear-o erated liftingrods. These devices, while nishing sufficient power for operating the frame, are objectionable because the pressure of the frame and distributers is suflicient to cause the gearing, which is hand-operated, to run in a reverse direction from that in which it was turned to raise the frame whenever the pressman releases hishold on the frame, and for this reason it has been necessary to supply devices of this character with independent locking;means,'which devices were expensive and cumbersome. Furthermore, in inking mechanisms as usually constructed the vibrating distributors, which were mounted in the movable frame before referred to, have been given a vibrating movement by means of a suitable lever, mounted on an operatingshaft, the ends of the lever engaging collars on the rolls. When the movable frame was lifted, the collars were disengaged from the ends of the lever, which remained stationary because it was mounted on the shaft. It freuently happened, however, that in lifting t e rolls the distributers would shift somewhat, so that the operating-collars on the shafts of these distributers would not engage with the ends of the levers when the frame was lowered into its operative position, and in order to effect the engagement itwas neces sary for the pressman to shift the rollers lengthwise, which operation consumed time.

Referring to the drawings, which illustrate one embodiment of the invention, the mechanism which has been selected to illustrate the invention is the inking mechanism of a bed-and-cylinder rinting-machine.
The frame of t e machine, which may be of any suitable construction, is marked 1. The form-roller stand, which may be of any preferred type of construction, is marked 2, the stand being bolted to the frame, as is usual. The inking mechanism shown embodies four form-rollers 3, the journals of these rollers being supported in open bearings of ordinary type, thesebcarin s bein supported in sockets in the stand in t e usua vmanner and being adjustable, as is usual in such constructions. The stand is rovided with two pairs of upwardly-exten ing pro- 'ections 4, one projection of each pair being iocated on opposite sides of the machine.
Inasmuch, however, as the illustration of only one side of the'machine is necessary for an understanding of the machine, only one of each of these pairs is illustrated.
The movable frame for carrying the distributing-rolls may be variously constructed and may be mounted in any suitable manner. In the preferred constructions and as illustrated it consists of a pair of curved arms 5, these arms being pivoted at 6 to suitable brackets 7, attachedto the frame. Only one of'the brackets and arms is, however, shown, for the reasons before stated- The distributing-rolls (marked 8) have their shafts 9 suitably journaled in the arms 5, and the arms themselves rest on the projections 4 of the ink-roller stand before referred to when the distributers are in operative position.
As is usual in the class of inking mechanisms which has been selected to illustrate the invention, the distributers will be driven ositively and will drive the form-rollers by iction. The means for driving these distributers may be of any suitable character. As shown, the shafts 9 are provided with ears 10, which ears are in mesh with pinlons 11, mounte on studs 12, extending inward from the ink-roller stand. These pinions are arranged to be engaged by a rack on the reciprocating bed, the rack and bed being illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. =3. This construction for driving the distributers is a usual one, and any other desired means may be substituted therefor. In the construction illustrated rider-rolls 13 are provided, which run on the distributers, these rolls be ing journaled in open bearings 14, carried on the movable frame.
In order to obtain ready access to the rollers for cleaning purposes, the pivoted frame is swung upward, and devices are provided for this urpose. While these devices may be varied in their specific construction, they will include a lifting-lever and suitable oper atin devices, the lever being located beneath the ame. Furthermore, this lever will be referably so arranged that when the frame is in its raised position the strains produced by the weight of the frame will be lengthwise of the lever and through. its center of movement, so that the lever is self-locking.
In the construction shown the lifting-lever is marked 15. In the referred construction two of these levers wil be em loyed, one on hearings in the frame of the machine, and the lever is provided with an antifriction camroll 17. The operating'means for the lever may be varied within wide limits; but in the preferred construction the shaft 16 will have attached thereto a segment-arm 18, the teeth 19 of which engage with a gear 20, mounted on the frame of the machine. In the referred construction this gear will be han -operated and is illustrated as provided with a handle 21, by which it may be turned. Preferably, also, the frame will'be provided with a cam-block22, against which the antifriction-roll 17 bears. that by this mechanism the frame carrying the distributers ma be readily liftedas shown, for instance, in Fig. Jr-and owing to It will be understood the relation of the parts the weight of the frame when the same is raised will not tend to rock the lever or levers 15 about their center, so that no'extraneous locking means are necessary to hold the frame in its raisedpo-v sition. Preferably, however, there will be provided a stop 23, which operates to prevent the segment-arm from being swung too far over, so as to cause the roller 17 to run off the block 22.
The distributin -rollers will preferably be arranged to be vi rated as is customary in inking mechanism constructions of the type selected to illustrate the invention, and this vibrating mechanism, while it may be varied widely in construction, will referably inelude a vibrating lever 24. T e connection between the vibrating lever and the distrib uters may be eflected in any desired manner; but preferably each of the shafts 9 will be provided with a grooved collar 25, with which the ends, of the lever engage, this being a wellknown construction. The operating means for the lever may be of any desired or usual character. As shown, these means include a vertical shaft 26, stepped in a bearing 27, mounted on the frame, the shaft being further supported by a bearing 28, located on the inkroller'stand. Any suitable means -may be .employed for moving theshaft to efiect-the operation of the vibratin lever. In the construction shown the sha t carries a segment 29, which is engaged by a segment 30, mounted on a lever 31, this lever being pivoted on a stud 32, which is in turn carried on a bracket 33, secured to the frame of the machine. The end of the lever 32 is provided with the usual antifriction-roll and engages a cam 34 on a cam-shaft 35. i r
1 As has been pointed out, in former constructions it has been customary to connect the vibrating lever directly to-the shaft, so that when the distributer-roll-carrying frame 'was raised the ends of the vibrating lever were disengaged from the collars on the shafts of the distributer-rolls. If the rolls became shifted, therefore, the collars would not engage their levers when the frame was moved into its operative osition, and this required a shifting of the ro lers by the pressman. In accordance with the present invention the connection between the vibrating lever and its operating means is a disconnectible one, so that the lever will always remain engaged with the collars or other means by which it vibrates the distributers.
The disconnectible connection between the lever and its operating means may be widely varied in construction. however, the lever is mounted on a short shaft 36, said shaft serving as a power-transmitting section. This shaft is mounted in a bearing 37, secured to the movable distributer-roll frame. Suitable engaging devices will be provided between the power-shaft 26 and this transmitting-section 36. While these means may be of any suitable character, in the construction shown the shaft 26 is provided with a recessed block 38, and the power- -transmitting section is provided on its lower end with a block 39, properly proportioned to engage the recess in the block 38 It may happen that after the distributerroller-carrying frame is raised the relative position of the power-transmitting section and the shaft 26 will be varied, so that the engaging devices referred to? will not come into proper engagement. To insure the engagement of these devices, therefore, suitable ten sioning means will be preferably provided. In the construction shown these .tensioning devices include a spring 40, said spring being located between the bearing 37, before re-.
ferred to, and the block 39, the tendency of this spring therefore being to cause the block 39 to engage the recess in the block 38 whenever the parts are in such relative position as to admit of this engagement. 7
While the weight of the frame and the 7 arts which it carries might be sufficient to llold the frame in its operative position and tocause the engagement of the devices which secure the vibrating means and its operating means, there will preferably be employed As shown,
locking devices which will insure that the frame after being lowered is held in its proper operative position. These locking devices may be of any suitable character. In the construction illustrated, however, there is provided'a shaft 41, which extends across the machine from side to side, and preferably there will be provided at each end an eccentric-pin 42, each of these pins engaging an opening in a latch 43, these latches-passing through vertical slots 44 in the arms 49, constituting the frame. These latches are further preferably provided with slots 45, which engage pins 46, mounted in the arms. The lower hooked ends of these latches 43 engage with keepers 47 which are formed on the inkroller stand, before referred to. The shaft 41 is or may be provided with suitable operating means, such as a handle 48. It will be readily understood that by turnin the shaft 41 by means of its handle the late es for engagin with their keepers, as indicated in Fig. 6, will be swung downward and outward by the movement of the eccentric-pins 42 into the position indicated in Fig. 7, so that the frame may be readily raised. After the frame has been lowered the reverse movement of the shaft will swing the latches into the position shown in Fig. 6.
Changes and variations may be made in the constructions shown by which this inven tion is carried into effect. The invention is not, therefore, to belimited to the specific construction herein shown and described.

11. In an inking mechanism, the combination with a movable frame, of distributers mounted therein, a lever for vibrating the distributers, a vertical operating-shaft, a power-transmitting section between the shaft and the lever, cooperating engaging devices on the shaft and section, and a s ring for insuring the eiwagement of these evices, substantially as described.
12. In an inking mechanism, the combination with a movable frame, of distributers mounted therein, a lever for vibrating the distributers, an operating-shaft having a recessed locking-block thereon, a transmittingshaft between the lever and the operatin shaft, said shaft having an engaging bloc thereon cooperating with the recessed locking-block, and. means for insuring the enga ement of the two blocks, substantially as e.- scribed.

In an inking mechanism, the combination with a movable frame, of distributers mounted therein, a lever for vibrating the distributers, an operating-shaft having a recessed locking-block thereon, a transmittingshaft between the lever and the operatin shaft, said shaft having an engaging bloc thereon cooperating with the recessed locking-block, a spring for insuring theen agement of the two blocks, and means for ocking the frame in its operative position, substantially as described.

In an inking mechanism, the combination with a pivoted frame, of distributers mounted thereon, a lever for vibrating the distributers, an operating-shaft, a tensioneontrolled disconnectible connection between the vibrating lever and its operating means, means for locking the frame in its operative position, a lifting-lever pivoted beneath the frame, and a gear and segment for operating the lever, substantially as described. In an inking mechanism, the combination with a pivoted frame, of distributers mounted thereon, a lever for vibrating the distributers, a shaft, a s ring controlled power-transmitting section etween the shaft and the lever, cooperating locking devices on the section and shaft, means for lockin the frame in its operative position, a liftingever pivoted beneath the frame and means includmg a segment and a hand-operated gear for operating the lever, substantially as described.
