Be it known that I, CHARLES W. l.\/IORHOUS, of Greenwich, in the county of Washington and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Game-Board, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements in games; and the object of my invention is to produce a game apparatus which can be easily made up in the form of a board and held in the lap, like a checker-board, or can be laid on a table or other support.

The object of my invention is to produce an amusing and instructive game in which the States of the Union are indicated and on which the symbols or marks representing the States are arranged to form spots on which checkers or other devices can be moved in playing the game, as will be'hereinafter described.

WVith these ends in view my invention consists of a game-board the construction and arrangement of which will be hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in whicl H Figure 1 is a view of the game-board. Fig. 2 is an assembled view of a checker of each of the series employed in the game.

My invention comprises a series of spots, shown in the drawings in circular form,which are arranged in the form of a triangle and on which the names of the States are produced, each spot having the name of a State thereon. Obviously the spots,so called, can be made of any color, as likewise can the board; but I prefer to make the spots circular, with a white ground on which the names are produced in black, though of course this is not essential. As before stated, the number of spots corresponds to the number of States, and there are therefore forty-five in all, and by arranging them in triangular form it will be seen that there are nine spots on a side and the others are located at equidistant points on the surface of the board. The spots are connected by lines in both directions, the lines being parallel with two sides of the triangle and intersecting the spots and other lines crossing the triangle parallel to the base thereof.

Many games can be played on the board, and it requires three players-one for each side-and the players can be designated so as to represent ditferent parties.

In the drawings one part of the board is marked D, another R, and another P, which letters can stand for the partiesDemocratic,. Republican, Populist, or Prohibition. Obviously the names of the parties can be written out in full and the names can be changed as parties change.

I prefer to play the game with red, white, and blue checkers. To show the use of the board, I will state, therefore, several games which can be played, though it is evident that other games can also be' played on the board without affecting my invention. To playthe game which I call President, nine red checkers or men are placed on the circles in the corner marked R, with the exception of the extreme corner circle, which is left vacant, and these men are called Republicans. Nine white checkers are'similarly placed in the corner marked D and are called Democrats. Nine blue checkers are similarly placed in the corner marked P and are called Populists or Prohibitionists. The men are moved either forward or sidewise, much as in the game of checkers, and along the lines on the board. \Vhen a man gets on an opponents corner-circle, the man is called a Governor, and when a Governor gets on the second opponents corner-circle it is called President, and the player of the President checker wins the game. The checkers are indicated on the board by dotted lines.

Another game may be played as follows: Ten red men are placed on the ten circles in one corner of the board, ten white men in a second corner, and ten blue men in a third corner. The men are moved forward or sidewise, as before. The object of the game is to jump as in checkers and take the men of the other players from the board.

As stated, other games can be played; but the above show the manner of using the board.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A game apparatus comprising a board having a triangular lield thereon with fortyfive spots spaced apart on the field and arranged to form a series of smaller triangles each spot being marked to represent a State of the Union, and checkers or men of three different colors to move on the said board.
