Be it known that 1, Jules N. DEAvER,a citizen of the United States. residing at Millcreek. in district No. 22, Indian Territory,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display-Racks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in racks especially adapted for store use; and the object of the invention is to produce a simple and efficient rack which is adapted to hold goods for display, &c., and so arranged that it may be raised and lowered and held at different elevations.

The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and in combinations and arrangements of parts, which will behereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my apparatus, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view showing the manner of construction of the rack.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A A designate tubular strips which are engaged by the concaved members C, which are fastened at the corners of the skeleton shelves C. The upper ends of the tubular strips A are bent toward each other, and to their meeting-points D are connected the corresponding ends of a rope E.

F designates drums, which are mounted in suitable bearing-blocks F, and H designates wheels which are fixed to the drums, preferably beyond the ends thereof, and about said drums are adapted to wind ropes E, one to each drum. To the corresponding end of each rope is attached a weight K, which weight is provided for the purpose of counterbalancing the rack and its load.

N N designate brake-shoes, which are concave and adapted to be normally held against the circumference of the wheels by means of springs O, which are fastened to a bar Q, carrying said shoes. A string J is fastened to said bar Q, whereby by pulling down upon a ring J the bar and shoes may be drawn away from the wheels and allow the rack to be lowered.

The operation of my apparatus is simple and is as follows: When it is at its highest position and it is desired to lower the same, the weight of the operatorholding down upon the rope J releases the shoes from the wheels and the weight of the rack will cause the same to lower and the weights to rise. When it is desired to hoist the rack, the brakes are released, and by the lifting up of the rack the weights K will lower and the slack rope supporting the rack will wind up, and when the rack is raised to the desired height the brakeshoes may be set and the rack held in the position desired.

From the foregoing it will be observed that by the apparatus shown and described a simple and efficient rack is provided especially adapted for display purposes in stores and one which may be held at any height and so arranged that access may be had to the various parts of the rack by simply releasing the brakes and allowing the rack to fall by gravity.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A display apparatus for store service, 620., comprising a rack, suitably-journaled winding-drums, bearing-blocks suspended from a ceiling and adapted to support said drums, ropes connected to said rack, winding about said drums, weights secured to said ropes, a bar, springs fastened to said bar and connected to said ceiling, frictional brake-shoes carried by said bar and adapted to engage said drums, and means for drawing said brakeshoes and bar from contact with said drums, as set forth.
