GRAVITY ROLLER SIDE BEARING.

JEAN]? 0 [0/7/7021 ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. OCONNOR, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO W. H. MINER COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 31, 1905.
Application filed July 6, 1905. Serial No. 268,576.
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. OCoNNoR, a
citizen of the United States, residing in Chi cago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gravity-Roller Side Bearings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in gravity-roller side bearings for railwaycars.
The object of my invention is to provide a gravity-roller side bearing of a strong, efficient, and durable construction in which the rollers interposed between the upper and lower bearing-plates will be automatically kept in central or proper relative position in respect to the upper and lower bearingplates when the car after passing around a curve again passes onto a straight track, in which the rollers may be kept properly spaced, and in which the rollers will autovmatically return by their own gravity and that of the load thereon to their normal or central position.
My invention consists in the means I employ to practically accomplish this object or result that is to say, it consists, in connection with the upper and lower bearing-plates, one secured to the body-bolster and the other to the truck, the lower bearing-plate being furnished with reversely-inclined or gravity tracks for the rollers, the tracks for the rollers in the upper and lower bearing-plates being preferably curved about the king-bolt as a center, of bearing-rollers preferably conical in form to correspond to the curvature of the upper and lower tracks between which they are interposed, a pair of spacers having pivot-studs fitting in the rollers and an intermediate pivot-stud to receive a roller regulating or positioning device, and a roller regulating or positioning device pivotally connected to said spacerplates and engagin at its upper end the upper bearing-plate and at its lower end the lower bearing-plate.
Myinvention also consists in the novel construction of parts and devices and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown or described.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in vertical section, of a roller side bearing embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view, partly in horizontal section. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the roller regulating or positioning device, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the roller-spacer devices.
In the drawings, A represents the base or lower bearing-blate, the same being secured to the truck-bolster, and B is the upper bearing-plate, the same being secured to the bodybo ster of the car. The lower bearing-plate A is provided with roller-tracks a for the rollers C C. Each of the roller-tracks a is furnished with reverse inclines a a so that the rollers C C will tend to return to their central or normal position by their own gravity and by that of the load resting upon them. The roller-track A is preferably curved about the king-bolt as a center, as will be readily understood from Fig. 2 of the drawings. The upper bearing-plate B has a roller-track b, similarly curved about the king-bolt as a center. The bearing-rollers C C are preferably of conical form to correspond to the curvature of the track about the king-bolt. The bearing-rollers C are each furnished with central holes or bearings c to receive the pivot-studs d of the spacer plates or devices D D, two of the same being pref erably employed, one upon the inside and the other upon the outside. The spacers D D are also furnished with middle pivot studs (1, which fit in the pivot-hole f of the roller equalizing or positioning device F, which is thus pivotally mounted on the roller-spacers D. The roller-positioning device F is furnished witha pivot or bearingf, which fits in a suitable slot or recess a in the base or lower bearing-plate A, and with a similar pivot or bearing which fits in a corresponding slot or recess 6 in the upper bearing or cap plate B. The roller-positioning device F thus connects the upper and lower bearing-plates, the spacers, and rollers and insures the rollers being kept in normal position and proper relations to the other parts. The base or lower bearing-plate A is provided with a removable guide-plate A, secured thereto by bolts or rivets a and which overhangs the guide-flanges b on the upper or cap plate B. The upper or cap plate B is provided with depending sides 6 which embrace the spacers D D on each side, and thus hold the parts in their assembled position. I
