Be it known that I, HOWARD K. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Sheet-Feeding Machine, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to sheet-feeding machines and machines to be fed thereby, my object being to provide improved means for controllingthe delivery mechanism ofthe feedingmachine, said means operated in connection with the operation of the receiving-machine and controlled by the sheet after the same has assumed the required position on said receiving-machine.
My improvement is applicable, for instance, to sheet-feeding machines which comprise an intermittently operated delivery mechanism for the sheet and which is controlled by the sheet itself as it is moved forward. I provide means upon the receivingmachine adapted to be operated by the sheet to operate mechanism for the further control of said intermittently operated delivering means.
My invention also comprises means connected with the means above described for controlling the operation of intermittentlyoperated receiving means connected with thereceiving-machine. Such an intermittentlyoperated receiving device is the drop and feed roller in common use in connection both with feeding and with folding or with other receiving machines. In connection with such drop and feed roller mechanism on the feeding-machine I provide means whereby the drop and feed rollers are made to cooperate to carry the sheet forwardly to the receivingmachine at certain required intervals. I provide, further, means for controlling the reciprocative or intermittent movement of the drop-roller, said controlling means being controlled by the sheet, so that the drop-roller shall not be permitted to assume the operative position until the sheet is in the required position to be operated upon thereby, and it is in connection with this controlling means that I apply the further controlling means operating in connection with the receivingmachine.
Referring to the drawings, Figure1 is a plan view of portions of the feeding device and receiving device which includes my improved mechanism. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1 with the near side frame of the feeding-machine removed. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view of the portion of the ma chine, including the feed and drop rollers and latching means therefor, the pneumatic head being shown in cross-section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 4. Fig. A is a front elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary side elevation from a point opposite the point of view of Fig. 3. Referring to Figs. 2 and 3, the feed-roller 1 and drop-roller 2 for cooperating therewith,
the cam-operated member 3 for reciprocating the drop-roller 2, the cam 4 for controlling the action of member 3, and the latch 5 for the further control of member 3 are constructed and adapted to operate substantially in the manner described and illustrated in Letters Patent to me, No. 768,375, dated August 23, 1904, for machine for feeding sheets. By the mechanismillustrated and described in said patent I have provided tripping means actuated by the sheet after it has passed between the drop and feed roller for operating a valve to cause the pneumatic operation of the shaft 6, supporting the latch member 7,

3, so that the drop-roller will not be prevented thereby from cooperating with the feedroller. I also provide means whereby the cam is rotated in a certain relation with respect to the other operating parts of themachine and also with respect to the operation of the receiving-machine, so as to insure the delivery of the sheet from the feeding-machine to the receiving-machine at the proper moment-that is, when the sheet is true and ready to be fed' and also when the receiving-machine is in the proper point in the cycle of its operation to receive said sheet. It, however, sometimes occurs that one sheet does not reach the proper position in the receiving-machine before the next sheet is delivered thereto, and the sheets are thus! intermittently-operated delivery mechanism of the feeding-machine, so as to prevent the delivery thereby of a second sheet until the trip last mentioned has been operated by the sheet just preceding. For example, when one sheet has reached the position in which it will be struck by the folding-blade to send it between the rollers the way is clear for the succeeding sheet. I therefore place the tripping means so as to be engaged by the advanced edge of the sheet only when said sheet has assumed the position to' be struck by the folding-blade. Having once assumed the position properly over the slit of the foldingmachine, it is obvious that it will immediately be operated upon by the blade to be sent between the folding-rollers. It will then be safe to permit the succeeding sheet to be operated on by the delivery mechanism of the feeding-machine and the receiving mechanism of the folding-machine at the same moment that the first sheet is being operated upon by the folding-blade.
ilfee/zanism controlled &y the second ocdoetrip for controlling the feeding means.1 will now describe the mechanism which is controlled by this second valve-trip. To the latch member 7 (see Figs. 3 and 5) is secured the vertically-extending arm 9. To the upper extension of arm 9 is pivotally secured the connecting-rod 10. The other end of the connecting-rod 10 is secured to the arm 11, which in turn is loosely journaled on shaft 12, which is suitably supported in the brackets 56, connented with the framework of the machine. To shaft 12 is keyed the arm 13, which is adapted to rest upon the end of piston 14:, which in turn is operated by the diaphragm 15 in the pneumatic chamber or head 16. Compressed air is delivered to this chamber 16 from any suitable source of compressed-air supply, subject to the control of the valve operated by mechanism connected with the receiving-machine hereinafter to bedescribed. To the shaft 12 is also keyed the arm 17, having at its free end an adjustable toe 18 for engagement with the hand-operated lever 19. This member 17 has a second extension 20, to the free end of which is secured the upper end of spring 2l,the lower end of said spring 21 being secured to a stationary part of the machine. Member 11 is also provided with the downward extension, to the lower end of which is secured the latch 22. Member 11 is also provided with the lug or horizontal projection 23, which is adapted normally to be engaged by the shoulder 24 of member 17. It may also be explained that the spring 21 is adapted to overcome the force of the spring 27, secured to arm 9, which spring 27 is intended for normally bringing latch 5 out of engagement with piece 8.
It will now be seen that normally the operation of spring 21 upon member 17 by reason of the engagement of shoulder 24 of member 17 with lug 23 of member 11 in Fig. 3 will tend to move member 11 in the clockwise direction, and consequently press rod 10 toward the right, and thereby cause the latching member 7 and the latch 5 to be maintained in the position shown in said Fig. 3 that is, in engagement with piece 80f member 3-so as to prevent the operation of the drop-roller 2. At the same time the lower extension of member 11 will be pressed toward the left, also in the clockwise direction, to maintain the latch-piece 22 in engagement with the piece 25 of the mechanism supporting the drop-roller 26 of the receivingdevice,so as to lock the same in the inoperative position. It will thus be seen thatwhen the piston 14 is in the position shown in Fig. 3 thespring 21 will maintain theshaft12,and consequently the arm 17, in such position as to secure the latching of the drop-roller 2 of the feeding device and the drop-roller 26 of the receiving device, so that no sheet can be delivered to the receiving device or carried from the feeding device while the pneumatic piston 14 is in said position shown in Fig. 8. When, however, the valve is operated to admit air into the pneumatic head or diaphragm-chamber 16, the piston 14: is pushed outwardly-that is, to the left-thereby operating member 13 in a counter-clockwise direction, and also shaft 12 and arm 17. which is keyed thereto, so as to withdraw the shoulder 24 from engagement with projection 23 of arm 11. This leaves arm 11 free to respond to the actuation of spring 27 to permit the disengagement of latch 5 from piece 8 and also the disengagement of latch 22 from piece 25, as shown in Fig. 5, to permit the cooperating movement of the droprollers 2 and 26 when the other conditions necessary for such movements are present.
H cmd- Operating Means.
(a) For the arbitrary starting of t/Lefeedz'ng 0perdtz'0n.As will hereinafter be explained, the admission of compressed air to the pneumatic head 16, and the consequent movement of piston 1 1, which will permit the unlatching of the operating mechanisms of drop- rollers 2 and 26, can only occur at such point in the cycle of operation of said machines as will result when a sheet has reached the required position in the receiving-machine. It is obvious therefore that it will be necessary in I the initial starting of the machine before any sheet whatever has been fed to the receivingmachine to substitute an arbitrary actuation in place of this pneumatic actuation. For this purpose I have provided the lever 19, (see Fig. 5,) secured to the shaft 30, having its upper free end pivotally secured to the rod 31,
which rod is slidably supported in the bracket 32, secured to the framework of the machine and adapted to be operated by the handle 33. Slidably mounted upon the rod 31 is the sleeve 34, normally engaging with bracket 32 and provided with the slot 35. A pin 36, secured to said rod 31 and projecting into slot 35, 'will obviously limit the movement of the rod 31 in the direction to the left to the amount of travel of said pin 36 in slot 35. A collar 59 is secured to the rod 31, and a compressionspring 57 is provided on said rod 31, operating between said collar 59 and sleeve 34. The purpose of this spring is normally to maintain the pin 36 at the right-hand end of slot 35. By drawing the rod 31 to the left, or in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 5, the extent of movement permitted by pin 36 in slot 35 will cause the end 37 of lever 19 to engage the toe 18 of arm 17 to cause the withdrawal of the same from engagement with lug 23 of arm 11. This will permit the movement of arm 11 in response to the action of spring 27 and the consequent movements of latch 22 and latch 5.
(b) For the arbitrary latching 0 f the droprolters to stop the feeding 0peratt0n.It will be noted that sleeve 34 on rod 31 merely engages with bracket 32 to limit its movement in the left-hand direction or direction of the arrow, as shown in Fig. 5. Rod 31, however, is free to move in the other direction irrespective of said sleeve 34. To the lower free end of lever 19 is secured the arc-shaped exten sion 38,which engages the under side of lug 39, secured to the extension 40 of latch member 7. This are -shaped member 38 is so shaped and positioned as normally not to interfere with the free movement of latch memher 7 that is, in the range of movement limited by pin 36 and slot 35. When, however, the rod 31 is pushed in the right-hand direction opposite the direction of arrow shown in Fig. 5, the lower end of lever 19 is brought into the position shown in Fig. 6. In this position the lug 39 is brought along a surface 58, being a continuation of the arc-shaped extension 38, but in the arc of a greater circle than the adjacent are, so as to cause the actuation of latch member 7 into the latching or operative position, as shown in Fig. 6. Since latch member 7 and latch member 22 are practically tied together by the connectingrod 10, it follows that a similar operation results to latch 22. The purpose of this mechanism is that it at times becomes necessary to stop the intermittently-operated delivering and receiving mechanisms of the feeding and receiving machines before the sheets become choked between the feedingmachine and the first folding-rollers or similar devices of the receiving-machine, and by the mechanism just described the pushing forward or to the right of the hand-operated rod 31 results in disengaging both drop- rollers 2 and 26, so as to instantly stop the sheet in any position it may be, and thus prevent the wasting of several sheets before the respective machines could be stopped in the ordinary way.
T he Mice-tripping mechanism of the receiving" tZertea-Referring to Fig. 1, 42 indicates the valve which controls the air delivered under pressure to head 16 of the feeding device already described. The pipe 43 leads to the valve from a suitable source of air-su pply, which may be the general pneumatic system of the feeding-machine, while pipe 44 leads from the valve to the pneumatic head 16.
The valve 42 and the mechanism for controlling the operation of same are illustrated in Figs. 7 to 10, inclusive. This valve 42 is of usual type of air-valve, having a verticallymovable piston member 45, which serves to open and close communication between the supply-pipe 43 and the delivery-pipe 44 and the delivery-pipe 44 and the outside atmosphere. When in the position shown in Fig. 8, the piston is held in the elevated position by the tripping member 46, the lower end 47 of which member projects downwardly below the path of travel of the sheet. The shaft 48 is geared with the other operative parts of the folding-machine and has mounted thereon the cam 49. (See Figs. 2, 7, 8, 9, and 10.) Nith each rotation of shaft 48 the cam 49, which is secured thereto, is rotated, and the lever 50, having the antifriction-wheel 51, adapted to engage with said cam, is made to oscillate the shaft 52, to which said lever is keyed. The oscillation of shaft 52 causes the reciprocation of lever 53, which is also keyed to said shaft 52. Lever 53 is adapted to engage the arm 54 of the piston-controlling trip member 46. With each reciprocation, therefore, of lever 53 the piston is elevated and permitted to fall. The shaft 48, carrying cam 49, is so geared and rotated in connection with the other operating parts of the machine that the extension 47 of the trip member 46 will be elevated thereby before the advanced edge of the sheet reaches the limit of its travel toward and against the guide member 55. When the sheet reaches such position, the extension 47 will be maintained thereby in said elevated position, which will permit piston member 45 to remain in the depressed position, as shown in Fig. 9, so that the piston 14 will be actuated outwardly at the proper time to permit the release and consequent actuation of the droprollers 2 and 26, as above described. It will be noted that the sheet is not required to lift or in any way move the tripping member 46, this movement being provided for by the cam 49 and operative mechanism connected there- &
with. The sheet merely has to prevent the downward movement of extension 47 when said sheet reaches the proper position. It is also to be noted that the tripping member 46 and extension 47 are so proportioned and positioned as to require the sheet to reach substantially the limit of its movement in the direction of the arrow as-shown in Fig. 8 before it can control the operation of said tripping member 46, and consequently the operation of the piston member 415 of valve 12.
What I claim is 1. The combination of a sheet-feeding machine, latching means for the control thereof, pneumatic means for operating the latching means, a machine for receiving the sheets from the feeding-machine and means, operated by the sheet on the receiving-machine, forcontrolling the pneumatic means.
2. The combination of a sheet-feeding machine and a machine for receiving sheets therefrom, latching means for the control of the sheet-feeding machine, pneumatic means for operating the latching means, and means, controlled by the sheet on the receiving-machine, for causing the actuation of the pneumatic means.
3. In combination with a sheet-feeding machine and a machine for receiving sheets therefrom, latching means for controlling the operation of the sheet-feeding machine and the receiving-machine, pneumatic means for actuating the latching means, and means, controlled by the sheet when in the required position on the receiving-machine, for controlling the actuation of the pneumatic means.
4:. In combination with a sheet-feeding machine and a machine for receiving sheets therefrom, latching means for controlling the operation of the feeding-machine, pneumatic means for actuating the latching means, and
a valve-trip, controlled by the sheet when in the required position on the receiving-machine, for controlling the pneumatic means.
5. In combination with a sheet-feeding machine and a machine for receiving sheets therefrom, latching means for controlling the operation of both the feeding and receiving machines, pneumatic means for actuating the latching means, and a valve-trip, controlled by the sheet when in the required position on the receiving-machine, for controlling the pneumatic means.
6. In combination with a sheet-feeding machine and a machine for receiving sheets therefrom, means for controlling the delivery mechanism of the feeding-machine, pneumatic means for actuating said controlling means, and means controlled by the sheet, when in the required position on the receiving-machine, for controlling the pneumatic means.
7 In combination with a sheet-feeding machine and a machine for receiving sheets therefrom, means for controlling the delivery mechanism of the feeding machine, pneumatic means for actuating said controlling means, and means, controlled by the sheet when in the required position on the receiving-machine, for causing the actuation of the pneumatic means.
8. In combination with a sheet-feeding machine and a machine for receiving the sheets therefrom, latching means for controlling the operation of the delivery mechanism of the feeding-machine and the receiving mechanism of the receiving-machine, pneumatic means for operating said latching means, and'a valvetrip', controlled by the sheet when in the required position on the receiving-machine, for controlling the pneumatic means.
9. In combination with a receiving-machine and a machine for feeding sheets thereto, latching means for controlling the operation of the feeding-machine, pneumatic means for operating the latching means, and an oscillating valve-trip therefor, controlled by the sheet when in the proper position on the receivingmachine, for controlling the pneumatic means.
10. In combination with asheet-feeding machine and a machine for receiving sheets therefrom, means for controlling the delivery of sheets from the feeding-machine to the receiving-machine, pneumatic means for operating said controlling means, and a valve-trip therefor, controlled by the sheet when in the required position on the receiving-machine, for controlling the pneumatic means.
11. In a sheet-feeding machine comprising intermittently-operated delivery mechanism, latching means therefor, pneumatically-operated latch-controlling means, a machine for receiving sheets from the feeding-machine and means connected with the receiving-machine and controlled by the sheet delivered thereto for controlling the pneumatically-operated latch-controlling means.
12. In a sheet-feeding machine comprising intermittently-operated delivery mechanism, a machine for receiving sheets therefrom, a sheet-controlled valve-trip in said receivingmachine and pneumatically-operated means controlled thereby for controlling the operation of the delivery mechanism.
13. In combination with a sheet-feedingmachine and latching means for the control thereof, a machine for receiving sheets therefrom, pneumatically-operated means controlled by the sheet on the receiving-machine for controlling the said latching means and manuallyoperative means for the arbitrary actuation of said latching means.

In combination with asheet-feeding machine, a machine for receiving sheets therefrom, pneumatically operated means controlled by the sheet on the receiving-machine for controlling the operation of the feedingmachine, and manually-operative means for the arbitrary actuation of said last-mentioned controlling means.

In combination with a sheet-feeding machine, a machine for receiving sheets therefrom, valve-trip-controlled pneumatically-operated means controlled by the sheet on the receiving-machine for controlling the operation of the feeding-machine, and manually-operative means for the arbitrary actuation of said last-mentioned controlling means.
16. In combination With a sheet-feedingmachine, a machine for receiving sheets therefrom, pneumatically controlled latching means controlled by the sheet on the receiving-machine for controlling the operation of the feeding and receiving machines, and manually-operative means for the arbitrary actuation of said latching means.
17. In com bination With a sheet-feeding machine, a machine for receiving sheets therefrom, pneumatically operated means controlled by the sheet on the receiving-machine for controlling the operation of the feeding and receiving machines and manually-operative means for the arbitrary actuation of said last-mentioned controlling means.
18. In combination With asheet-feeding machine, a machine for receiving sheets therefrom, valve-trip-controlled pneumatically-operated means controlled by the sheet on the receiving-machine for controlling the operation of the feeding and-receiving machines, and manually-operative means for the arbitrary actuation of said last-mentioned con trolling means.
19. In a sheet-feeding machine comprising intermittently-operated delivery mechanism, a machine for receiving sheets therefrom, latching means for controlling the intermittently-operated mechanism, pneumaticallyoperated means for the control thereof, means connected with the receiving-machine and controlled by the sheet delivered thereto for controlling the pneumatically-operated means, and manually-operative means for the arbitrary actuation of said latching means.
20. In a sheet-feeding machine comprising in termittently-operated delivery mechanism,
to, latching means for the control thereof, pneumatic means for operating the latching means, a valve and valve-tripping mechanism therefor on the receiving-machine controlled by the sheet, after the same has been fed thereto, for controlling the pneumatic means.
22. In combination With a receiving-machine and mechanism for feeding sheets thereto comprising intermittently operated delivery mechanism, latching means for controlling the intermittently-operated delivery mechanism, pneumatically-operated means for controlling the latching means, valve-tripping mechanism controlled by the sheet on the receiving-machine forcontrolling the pneumatically-operated means.
23. In combination With a receiving-machine and mechanism for feeding sheets thereto, comprisingin termittently-operated receiving and delivery mechanisms, latching means for said intermittently-0per'ated mechanisms, pneumatically-operated means for controlling the latching means, and valve-tripping mechanism controlled by the sheet on the receivingmachine for controlling the pneumaticallyoperated means.
24:. In combination-With a receiving-machine and mechanism for feeding sheets there to, a drop and feed roller connected with the receiving-machine, a drop and feed roller connected with the feedingmachine, latching means for controlling the drop-rollers, pneumatically-operated means for controlling the latching means and valve-tripping mechanism controlled by the sheet on the receiving-machine for controlling the pneumatically-operated means.
25. In combination with a receiving-machine and mechanism for feeding sheets thereto, a drop and feed roller connected With the receiving-machine. a drop and feed roller connected With the feeding machine, latching means for controlling the drop-rollers, pneu matically-operated means for controlling the latching means, valve tripping mechanism controlled by the sheet on the receivingmachine for controlling the pneumatically-operated means, and manually-operative means for the arbitrary actuation of the latching means.
