in the borough of Manhattan, county of New 1 York, city and State of New York, citizens of the United States, have invented an Improvement in Decorative Materials and lVall-Coverings, of which the following is a specification.

Decorative materials and wall-coverings as at present manufactured are both plain and figured. The colors of both of said materials are applied by means of rollers. The designs of the figured or ornamental materials are applied by pattern-rollers of about eighteen to twenty-four inches in circumference. Hence the design applied in colors is in repeating sections or multiplying figures that correspond and substantially match. and in figured wall-covering as hereinbefore employed each strip as applied to a side wall or ceiling had upon its surface a design in repeated sections, which in each strip applied must be matched along the meeting edge with the preceding strip to make a perfect continuity of the figure.

lVe have only illustrated one form of design; but it is evident that the design may be modified so as to be wholly or partially continuous or that they may be spaces of plain color in the design between the major design at one end and a frieze design at the other end; also, that the strips may first be printed with a fine, delicate, or indistinct background.

The wall-covering strips are adapted to be cut in lengths of six, eight, ten, or twelve feet adapted to match from the base or from a dado to the frieze or ceiling, and we prefer at each edge to have a short space of plain color to allow for trimming, and we further prefer that the respective edges should be made as usual of a width of paper slightly greater than the pattern proper, so as to provide for trimming to a definite line.
