To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN HENRY MEYER- HoFnR, Jr., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the countyof Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage- Receptacles; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to receptacles for garbage and ashes of the class adapted more especially for use in connection with outhousewalls or alley fences, whereby the receptacle may be filled on one side of the fence or wall and then turned on its supporting-trunnions to permit its removal from the other side thereof for the purpose of being dumped.

The primary object of my invention is the provision of simple and eiiicient means for pivotally supporting the receptacle within an opening in a fence or wall, whereby the receptacle is prevented from removal from such opening except when placed in one position.

The operation, arrangement, andV construction of the parts of the invention are fully described in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, in whicl Figure I is a'view of the rear of a fence or wall with my invention mounted in an opening therein and shown in closed position. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section taken on the dotted line in Fig. l. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detail views of the pivot-receiving socket of my invention, and Figs. 6, 7, and 8 are detail views of the pivot member thereof.

Referring to the drawings, l represents a portion of a fence or wall having an opening 2 provided therein in which the receptacle 3 is pivotally mounted. The receptacle 3 may be made of any desired shape or size and is mounted in the opening 2 with one of its sides in iin-sh position and the remaining portion thereof projecting on the inner side of the fence, as shown in Fig. 2. A cover 4. is pivoted to the inner side of the fence and adapted to rest upon and cover the receptacle when in normal position, as shown.

Projecting laterally from each of the lower outer corners of the receptacle 2is a pivot or inward movement of the receptacle.

trunnion 5, which is formed on a plate 6, that is adapted to be secured to the receptacle in any suitable manner and has its sides vertically flattened to form a transversely-elongated pivot, as shown in Figs. 6, 7, and 8. Mounted in the lower corners ofthe opening 2 in position to receive and form bearings for the pivots or trunnions 5 are the socket members 7, which are cast integral with or project from the backing-plates 8.

In order to eHect the easy removal of the receptacle 3 from the opening 2 when it is desired to empty it, the sockets7 are each provided at one side thereof with a slot 9 of suflicient width to permit the narrowed portion of the pivots 5 to be drawn therethrough` when they have been turned by a movement of the receptacle into alining positions therewith. The slots 9 are shown in the drawings as being formed in a plane diagonally disposed to that of the face of the fence I, so that the removal ofthe receptacle 3 may be accomplished as soon as it has been turned suiiiciently for its upper edge to escape the upper edge of the opening 2, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2. The slots 9 of the sockets 7 cach have their lower inner edges broadened, as shown at l0, to form a stop for the pivots 5 when the receptacle has been turned sufliciently to permit their removal from the sockets and are formed on their upper edges with an outwardly-projecting obliquely-disposed guiding-tongue Il, which is adapted to facilitate the ready iinding of the slots 9 when the pivots are returned to the sockets after the dumping of the receptacle.

The backing-plate 8 of each of the sockets 7 is provided on the rear thereof with a flange 8', which is adapted to be bolted and rigidly held loetween the contiguous faces of the fence l and the frame l2 surrounding the opening 2. It will thus be seen that the receptacle 3 is locked against removall from the fenceopening except when it is drawn outwardly on its axis and the su pporting-trunnions thereof turned into alining position with the slots 9 in the bearing-sockets 7.

A bar 13 is disposed transversely of the outer face of the receptacle 3 and has its ends prolonged and in impingement with the edges of the opening 2 for the purpose ot' limiting the One or more grips 14, by means of which the receptacle may be lifted from its bearings, are provided on the outer face of the receptacle, and

suitable locking means 15 is also provided thereon to prevent the removal of the receptacle by other than authorized persons.

As the ordinances of nearly all cities provide that garbage cans or receptacles must be movable to facilitate the dumping thereof, it has been the object of my invention to provide a sanitary receptacle that is pivotally mounted within the opening in a fence in a manner adapted to prevent its removal from the opening except when turned to a certain position with respect to the fence and to accomplish this without employing a removable lining' in a pivotally-swinging frame, as is now the case, thus simplifying and cheapening the manufacture of such receptacles.

It is obvious that such changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction of the parts as fairly fall within the scope of my invention may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination with a wall or fence having an opening therein, of a receptacle placed in and substantially closing said opening and provided with trunnions upon which it swings, said trunnions being flattened or transversely elongated, bearing-sockets secured in opposed position to the walls of said opening for receiving the trunnions and each having a slot 9 formed in its wall through which the flattened trunnions may be drawn to permit the removal of the receptacle from the opening, and means for limiting the swinging movement of the receptacle in the opening.`

2. The combination with a wall or fence having an opening therein, of a receptacle placed in said opening and provided at its lower portion with laterally-projecting trunnions upon which it swings, said trunnions being iiattened or transversely elongated, cylindrical bearingsoclrets arranged in the sides of said opening, each having a slot 9 formed in its wall to permit the lateral withdrawal of the trunnions therefrom when the receptacle is swung to a predetermined position, and a guiding-tongue projecting exteriorly therefrom adjacent to the slot to facilitate the ready finding of the slots when the trunnions are inserted therein, and means for limiting the oscillatory movement of the receptacle.

3. The combination with a wall or fence having an opening therein, of a receptacle placed in said opening and having its lower outer corners provided with laterally projecting trunnions upon which it swings, said trunnions being flattened or transversely elongated, cylindrical bearing-sockets arranged in the sides of said opening', each having an obliquely-disposed laterally-projecting tongue formed integral with its bearing-wall for the purpose described and a slot disposed in Hush position to one side of said tongue through which the associated trunnion may be inserted or withdrawn, said slot having the wall thereof opposed to the tongue intcriorly broadened to act as a stop for limiting the rotary movement of the trunnions in one direction, and means for limiting the inward movement of the receptacle in said opening.
