Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 26, 1905.
Application filed December 13, 1904. Serial No. 236,662.
To (tZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW A. DOWNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at O0- lumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calf-Muzzles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved form of muzzle for weaning calves in which the calf can graze with perfect freedom, but with which suckling is prevented without injury to the cow.
The invention is embodied in the combinations hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a muzzle according to the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a rear view.
In the views, 1 designates the main frame of the muzzle. This is made in its front portion of woven wire somewhat in the form of the upper member of a ducks bill. The edges of the frame are formed of rather stout wire, and these edge wires are extended rearward at each side and twisted together to form arms 1 and buckling devices l at their extremities. The arms are inclined to the plane of the lower edge of the muzzle. At the junction of the arms 1 with the frame 1 rings or fastening devices 1' are provided. Secured to the buckling devices 1" is a strap 2, that passes over the head of the calf, and said strap 2 also having a portion 2, that may or may not be integral with the strap 2, that passes under the neck of the calf. Se-
cured to the fastening devices 1 is a strap 3, that is shown to be riveted at 3 to the upper portion of the strap 2. Also secured to the fastening devices is a circular strap 4:, into which the head of the calf passes. The several straps referred to prevent undue raising and lowering of the main frame of the muzzle; but the edge of the muzzle permits it to be moved freely in a horizontal direction above the ground and at the same time prevents access of the calf to the teats of the cow.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a calf-muzzle, the combination of the main frame having the rearwardly-extending side arms, two straps to pass over the head of the calf connected respectively near the junctions of the side arms with the main frame and with the extremities of said side arms, a portion of the last-named strap also passing under the neck of the calf, and a circular strap secured near the junction of the side arms with the main frame through which the nose of the calf is passed.
2. In a calf-muzzle, the combination of the main frame having the rearwardly-extending side arms inclined'to the plane of the lower side of the main frame, two straps to pass over the head of the calf connected respectively near the junctions of the side arms with the main frame and with the extremities of said side arms, a portion of the last-named strap also passing under the neck of the calf, and a circular strap secured near thejunction of the side arms with the main frame through which the nose of the calf is passed.
In testimony whereofI aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
