Description
No..800,51'7. PATBNTED SEPT. 26, 1905.
H. PJVAN WAGENBN.
BOAT. BAILER.
APPLICATION FILED APR.14,1905.
ATTORNEYS HUBERT PIERREPONT VAN WAGENEN, OF RYE, NEW YORK.
DBOAT-BAILER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 26, 1905.
Application filed April 14, 1905. Serial No. 255,573.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUBER'I PIERREPONT VAN WAGENEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rye, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Boat-Bailer, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for bailing water caused by rain, waves, or the like from small boats, such as rowboats, the object being to provide a device for this purpose that will be simple in construction, that may be removably attached to a boat and conveniently operated.
I will describe a boat-bailer embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a row-boat, showing a bailing device embodying my invention as applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan of the bailing device. Fig. 3 is a front view thereof; and Fig. 4 is a side elevation, partly in section.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a boat in which is the usual thwart 2. Removably attached to the thwart 2, as here shown by means of a swinging clamp 2, is a plate 3, from which a post 4 stands upward, and adjustable vertically on this post 4. is a supplemental post 5. As here shown, this post 5 is movable through guide-straps 6, attached to the post 4., and is held as adjusted vertically by means of pins 7 which, as here shown, passinto perforations in the said post. 5 and engage on the upper sides of the parts 6. It is to be understood, however, that I do not limit my invention to any particular means for holding the post 5 in its adjusted position. By making the post 5 vertically adjustable the scoop to be hereinafter described may be arranged at any desired angle with relation to the bottom of the boat. Mounted to swing laterally on the auxiliary post 5 is a yoke 8, in which the handle 9 of the scoop 10 is mounted to swing.
In the operation the scoop 10 is to be dipped into the Water in the boat, then raised and turned laterally, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, to discharge the water from the scoop over the side of the boat.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with a boat, of a scoop mounted to swing vertically and laterally with relation to the boat.
2. The combination with a boat, of a post extended upward from the thwart thereof, a yoke mounted to swing laterally with relation to said post, and a scoop having its handle mounted to swing in said yoke.
3. The combination with a boat, of a plate removably attached to the thwart thereof, a post extended upward from said plate, an auxiliary post adjustable vertically on the first named post, a yoke mounted to swing laterally on said auxiliary post, and a scoop having swinging connection with said yoke.
4.. A bailing device adapted for removable connection with a boat and comprising a post, a yoke having lateral swinging relation to the post, and a scoop having its handle portion pivotally engaged in said yoke.
5. In a bailing device for a boat, a plate adapted to be removably secured to a thwart of the boat, a post extended upward from the plate, an auxiliary post having vertical sliding connection with the first-named post, a yoke mounted to swing laterally on said auxiliary post, and a scoop having its handle portion pivotally engaged in said yoke.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HUBERT PIERREPONT VAN WAGENEN.
