Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY H. CLoUeH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Elyria, in the county of Lorain and Statebf- Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Composition Posts, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to improvements in composition posts for fences and. the like,
such as are usually made of cement concrete, and are provided at intervals of their length with projecting loops or hooks through which strands of wire may be passed to form the fence. As ordinarily constructed these loops or hooks are either themselves mounted in the concrete body of the post or are secured to metal facing-plates having fastenings which are molded into the concrete,and in either case the projections formed not only interfere with the handling and. stowing away of the posts for shipment, but are likely to be and often are broken off during such handlingand shipment, with the result that the post is imperfect when it ultimately comes to be used.
With this difficulty in view the present invention contemplates a construction of post in which the fastening hooks or loops are omitted when the post is made and are not supplied until the post has been erected and is ready to be wired, flush or non-projecting seats or sockets for said loops or hooks being, however, provided in the post, so that said loops or hooks may be readily applied by the purchaser when and as required. Thus it is contemplated that each post shall be provided in one or more of its faces and at suitable intervals along its length from top to bottom with socket-sleeves molded into the post and adapted to receive and hold the shanks of the loops or hooks. These sockets it is further contemplated will be made of some comparatively. soft non-corrodible metal, such as zinc, and will be flanged at their inner ends or otherwise so constructed as to be locked A load of such posts while being shipped to their destination will then be devoid of projections and can be packed in close contact without danger of being marred by each other "or of having their loops or hooks broken off during handling and shipment. The loops or hooks themselves will be supplied tothe purchasers in quantities separate and distinct from the posts themselves to be inserted in the sockets thereof after the posts have been erected. Ordinary screw eyes or hooks will preferably constitute these devices, and the soft metal of the sleeve-sockets will enable the threaded shanks of the screw-eyes to be screwed home therein without requiring that thelattershall be previously threaded, the
threads on the shanks of the screw-eyes simply burying themselves in the soft metal as they are screwed into place.

It is contemplated that the sleeves 2 will be of a soft non-corrodible metal, such as zinc, and the fastening of the screw hooks or eyes into the sleeves will then simply require that their threaded shanks be screwed into the sleeves, seating themselves in the soft metal as they advance.
This construction is intended and obviously will enable the posts to be shipped from the factory without the screw-eyes, and consequently without any obnoxious projections which would interfere with the packing or handling of the posts. The screw-eyes themselves will be furnished separately and in bulk to the purchaser of the posts to be inserted by him after the post has beenset and when it is ready for the wire. The inserting of the screw-eyes may be readily accomplished by the use, if necessary, of a WIGl'lCh'OI' rod by which the required twisting force can be applied to the eye, no other tools being necessary. The need of previously threading the sleeves is thusdone away with and its cost saved, while the tight fitting of the shank suflicient to prevent any accidental displacement or working loose of the screw-eye within the sleeve follows, as a matter of course, Without care or effort. Furthermore, the breaking off of one of the loops or hooks or the withdrawal and loss of one of the screw-eyes becomes a trifling matter in this construction, since the replacement or restoration of the device only requires that another screw-eye shall be inserted in place of the one broken or lost. Other fastenings than screw-eyes may obviously also be employed,so long as they are provided with screw-threaded shanks, which are forcible into the softmetal sockets of the posts, and obviously, also, the concrete 1. As a means of securing fasteningdcvices to concrete structures, a soft metallic tubular socket embedded in the body of the concrete and having an unthreaded cylindrical bore, and screw-threaded shanks on the fastening devices forcible into screw-threaded engagement with said soft-metal sockets, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a concrete structure, of soft-metal sleeve-sockets having a cylindrical bore embedded in the body of the concrete and fastening devices having threaded shanks of larger diameter than the bores of the socket-sleeves and forcible into screwthreaded engagement therewith, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a concrete structure, of a tubular metallic socket embedded therein and having a lateral projection engaging the conerete mass, and a fastening device having a threaded shank larger than the bore of said socket, said threaded shank extending into the bore of the socket and having its threads embedded in the interior wall thereof, said socket being of soft metal, substantially asset forth.
