To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM T. PACE, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Iron City, in the county of Decatur and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tie Liners and Spacers, of which the followin is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a simple and effective device for lining ties of tracks and for properly and equally spacing each individual tie with reference to its adj a cent ties.
The invention is chiefly designed for use in lining new ties placed in position in remov- -1ng old ties and also in spacing the ties properly, as above mentioned.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 1s a perspective view of a device embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view, parts reduced, showing the invention as.when applied to a track in actual use. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the device. Fig. 4 is a view of a modification of the invention.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Specifically describing the invention, the numeral 1 in the drawings indicates a gagebar, which is composed of the sections 1 and 1 adjustably connected at one end, as shown at 2, by means of bolts or similar fastenings. The connected end portions of the sections 1 and 1 are provided with plurality of openings through which the fastenings may be passed so as to permit adjustment of the sections, as above mentioned. The outer end I of the section 1 of the gage-bar 1 is provided posite side, said parts 4 and 7 being in spaced relation and adjustable toward and from each other in order to admit of engagement of these members with rails of different sizes. The tie-engaging member 3 is adapted to engage with an end of a tie in the track in order that such end may be properly alined with the adjacent ties, the rail-engaging members 4 and 7 having been previously engaged with the rail to properly position the rail-bar 1 with reference thereto. A pivoted rest 8 is pivoted to the inner side of the member 3, as shown at 9, and a pin 10 is carried by this rest 8 and adapted to pass through an open ing therein into an opening in the member 3, so as to position the rest when the latter is disposed transversely of said member 3. The rest 8 consists of a bar and is used in order that the gage member may cooperate with an end of the tie, even though said end is not sawed oif straight, or, in other words, at
readily apparent.
The section 1 of the gage-bar carries a spacing-bar 11, said bar 11 having a plurality of adjustable blocks or spacing members 12, mounted thereon, so as to properly space adjacent ties. The blocks or members 12 are attached to the bars 11 by suitable fastening-bolts which pass through slots 13, and these members are therefore adapted to admit of positioning the ties at a greater or less distance apart in a manner which will be evident. The bar 11 is attached to the gage-bar 1 by means of suitable fastenings, such as bolts, and may be readily detached therefrom when the device is not in use, so that the parts of the device may be disposed with a view to economizing space. A handle attaching member 14 is projected upwardly from the section 1 of the gage-bar, between the ends of the latter, and comprising a U-shaped member in which the lower extremity of the handle 15 is adapted to be inserted, so as to detachably connect said handle with the gage device. Said lower extremity of the handle 15 is formed with an extension which is passed through the member 14 in attaching the handle to the gage device, and the handle 15 is conveniently arranged for manipulating the device in a manner apparent.
A modification of the invention shown in Fig. 4 embodies a device constructed somewhat similar to that shown in the first three figures of the drawings, being different in de tail construction, however. In this instance the sections of the gage-bar are indicated at 1 and 1 the section 1 being longitudinally slotted, as shown at 20, to receive a fastening 21, which admits of adjustment of the section 1 in an obvious manner. The rail-engaging member 4, which is carried by the section 1 of the gage-bar, projects upwardly therefrom instead of downwardly, as in the first con struction, and this member 4 carries an angle-plate 22, the vertical portion of which is slotted, as shown at 23, to permit adj ustment thereof vertically of the member 4. The horizontal portion of the angle-plate 22 carries the plate 6, having the outermost rail-engaging member 7", the plate 6 being slotted, as at 24, to permit adjustment thereof in an obvious manner. In the modified construction the handle 15 is threaded at its lower end, so as to admit of securing nuts thereon, said nuts clamping the section 1 of the gage-bar therebetween. The handle 15 is adjustable by the provision of a slot 25 in the length of the section 1, said slot being enlarged at one end, as shown at 26, to permit of passage of the nut at the lower end of the handle therethrough. The spacing-bar 11" is adjustable longitudinally of the gagebar 1 by reason of the provision of a slot 27 therein, permitting adjustment of the fastening 28, securing the spacing-bar to the gagebar. The section 1 is formed at one end with the rail-engaging member 3 corresponding with the member 3 in the first-mentioned construction, and the rest 8" is vertically adjustable upon the member 3" by reason of the provision of the slot 29 in the length of the member 3*.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a tie liner and spacer for tracks, the combination of a gage-bar having a tie-engaging member, rail-engaging members carried by said gage-bar, and a transverse tiespacing bar.
2. Ina tie liner and spacer for tracks, the combination of a gage-bar having a tie-engaging member, rail-engaging members carried by said gage-bar, a transverse tie-spacing bar, and a plurality of tie-spacing mem bers adjustably mounted upon said tie-spacing bar.
3. In a tie liner and spacer for tracks, the combination of a gage-bar composed of adjustably-connected sections, a tie-engaging member projecting from one section, spaced rail-engaging members carried by the other section, and a transverse tie-spacing bar mounted upon the gage-bar.

7. In a device of the class described, the combination of a gage-bar composed of adjustably-connected sections, a tie-engaging member projecting downwardly from one end of one section, a rail-engaging member projecting from an end of the other section, a plate adjustably mounted upon the second section, and a second rail-engaging member carried by said plate and adjustable toward and from the first-mentioned rail-engaging member.
