PNEUMATIC CHUCK.

Be it known that I, HUGO R. SLrvrNsKI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pneumatic Chucks, of which the following is a complete specification.
IVhile this invention relates generally to chucks in which the aws are actuated through a suitably-driven plunger, it is designed with special reference for use in connection with a spoke-riveter of the type shown in the patent of Chris Borg, No. 792,390, dated June 13, 1905, Pneumatic spoke-riveter.
The object of the invention is to provide improved means for receiving and gripping the hub of a wheel and for moving said hub to a position in which it can be operated upon by a suitable stationary spoke-riveting machine.
The preferred construction of my improvement is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a front elevation of the complete device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, half in section, of the same, but with the foot trip-lever and a portion of the connectin members shown removed. Fig. 3 is an en arged detail section of the chuck-head and associated parts; and Figs. 4 and 5 represent a plan and section, respectively, of the chuck-head.
In the drawings, 1 designates the fixed base, made, preferably, of cast-iron, and slidably mounted on the upper surface thereof in the dovetailed way 1 is the movable base-plate 2. This baseplate 2 is provided with two laterally-arranged lugs 2, (the one on the right-hand side not appearing in the half-sectional view of Fig. 2,) between which is pivotally mounted the lug 3 of the cylinder 3, the pin 4 forming the pivotal axis thereof. On the side of the cylinder opposite to the lug 3 is a second lug 32,
having an aperture 33 therein which receivesthe adjustment-screw 5, the aperture 33 being somewhat larger than the said bolt. The lower end of the set-screw 5 is received by a boss 22 on the base-plate 2, the said screw passing through the plate and affording means by which the said plate can be adjustably fixed in its dovetailed way in the base 1. The lock-nuts 5 on the set-screw 5 enable the vertical axis of the cylinder 8 to be adjusted slightly for a purpose which will hereinafter appear. The cylinder 3 is provided with an upwardly-projecting stem portion 6, which acts as a guide to the piston-rod 8 of the piston 7. A valve-box 9, containing suitable valve mechanism, is secured to the cylinder; but as such valve mechanism does not constitute a part of this invention details thereof are not deemed necessary in the present connection. The pipe 10 supplies the air, and the valve-stem 9 is actuated through the bell-crank 11 pivoting also on the pin 4 which forms the pivotal aXis of the cylinder 3. The bellcrank is controlled and actuated by means of the foot-lever 12, With the adjustable link connection 13 interposed therebetween. The upper end of the cylinderl 3 is provided with the stem portion 6, within which fits the piston-rod 8 of the piston 7. In the piston-rod 8 is formed the longitudinally-extending slot 8 in which fits the end of the cap-screw 14, the object being to prevent rotation of said piston-rod. To the upper or free end of the piston-rod is secured the chuck-head 15. (See Figs. 4 and 5.) This chuck-head is provided With a plurality of lugs, preferably three pairs, equiangularly arranged on the circumference of the head and near the bottom thereof, each pair of lugs receiving a hubclamping arm 16, with its horizontally-ex tending axis formed by the pin 16. The lower end of the hub-clamping arms is provided with the rollers 162 and the upper end with the radially-disposed hub-engaging setscrews 163, which thus renders the engaging end of said arms adjustable radially with respect to the hub. The upper end of the chuck-head 15 has formed therein the recess 15 for receiving the fastening-nut S2 on the upper end of the piston-rod 8. On the upper end of said chuck-head is formed also the interru ted-flange portion 152, which consti tutes a ub-receiving chamber, the interruptions therein providing openings for receiving the oil-cup on the wheel-hub and the setscrews 163, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4. The length of the upper end of the arms 16 is such that the set-screws 163 will lie within the interrupted portions of the flange 152 and their inner ends be made to bear against the hub, which lies within the chamber formed by said interrupted flange.

lower end of said sleeeve. Two straps 18 are bolted to the upper end of the stem 6 and are provided with the hook ends 18', which engage the said groove 17', thus permitting of rotative movement. A gland 19, suitably bolted to the upper end of the stem 6, forms a stuffing-box 20 and insures a tight bearing for the piston-rod in the upper end of the stem. An antifriction-bearing is formed between the conical sleeve 17 and the gland 19 by the balls 21 and a suitable ball-race, thus rendering easy of rotation the said sleeve. The upper end of the sleeve 17 is made cylindrical, so that the chuck-head '15 may have. continued movement while the hubclamping arms 16 remain in their clamped position.
The spoke -riveting machine in connection with which this pneumatic chuck is used is designated as a whole by A and is shown in For details of the construction and operation of said riveter reference may be made to the application already cited. The hub of the wheel operated upon is designated by B and the spoke-blanks b b The operation of the device is as follows: The device is placed beneath the rivetingmachine A and accurate adjustment in proper relative position completed by means of the cap-screw 5 in the lu 32. As the weight of the left-hand side 4of the cylinder rests upon the lower lock-nut 5', the inclination of the aXis of the cylinder can be adjusted and the hub-holding chuck-head 15 be brought in proper relation to the jaws of the spoke-fastening device A. The lower face of the upper lock-nut 5 does not rest on the lug 33, but is some distance above, in order to permit of a slight rocking or tilting movement of the cylinder 3. In the chuck-head 15, which first occupies the position indicated by full lines in Fig. 1, is placed a wheel-hub B.
Through the foot-lever 12 and the interme-A diate valve-actuating mechanism air is admitted to the cylinder 3 beneath the piston and the piston 7 and piston-rod 8 are forced upwardly, the piston-rod carrying with it the chuck-head 15. As the chuck-head and hub-clamping arms pivoted thereon move upwardly the rollers 16, rolling on the surface of the conical portion of the sleeve 17, will be forced outwardly, while the upper ends of said arms will be moved inwardly, causing the inner ends of the set-screws 163 to engage and securely clamp the hub. The clamping action being completed, the rollers 162 will continue on the cylindrical portion of the said sleeve, while the chuck-head carries the hub upwardly into operative relation withV the riveting-machine A. During the upsetting operation the heading-tool a of the spoke-riveter approaches the iiXed jaws a thereof, the cylinder rocking an amount suflicient to permit a shoulder to be upset between the hub and said fixed jaws a. The operation on one spoke being completed, the chuck-head and hub are dropped just suflicient for the spoke to clear the jaws of the said riveting-machine, then turned to position for operation on the adjacent spoke, and again raised. In this slight movement of the chuck-head the rollers 162 are in contact with the cylindricalportion of the sleeve 17, and hence the grip of the clamping-arms 16 on the hub is constant. As the pressure of contact of the rollers 162 on the sleeve is considerable, the sleeve in the last-.described rotary movement will be carried with the other rotating parts, the groove 17 permitting of such movement. In the initial movement of the chuck-head 15 upwardly the rollers 162 will exert a stress tending to carry the sleeve 17 upwardly, but the hooks 18/ of the straps 18 in the groove 17 restrain such longitudinal movement. After all the spokes b have been secured to the hub B the piston 7 is permitted to drop to its lowest position or to be forced down by air-pressure and the hub released as the arms 16 are allowed to swin inwardly at their lower ends.
W at l claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a pneumatic chuck, in combination, a cylinder, a piston and piston-rod in operative relation therewith, achuck-head secured to the free end of said piston-rod, hub-gripping arms pivotally mounted on said chuckhead, and means longitudinally iiXed secured to the end of said cylinder for actuating the said hub-gripping arms. v
2. In a pneumatic chuck, in combination, a cylinder, a piston and piston-rod in operative relation therewith, a chuck-head secured IOO IIO
to the free end of said piston-rod, hub-gripping arms pivotally mounted on said chuckhead, and a conical sleeve for actuating the said hub-gripping arms, said sleeve being iiXed with respect to longitudinal movement in relation to said cylinder.
3. ln a pneumatic chuck, in combination,

5. In a pneumatic chuck, in combination, a cylinder, a piston and piston-rod in operative relation therewith, a chuck-head secured to the free end of said piston-rod, hub-gripping arms pivotally mounted on said chuckhead, and a sleeve rotatably mounted on said piston-rod for actuating the hub-gripping arms, said sleeve being fixed With respect to longitudinal movement in relation to said cylinder, and constructed with its lower end conical and its upper end cylindrical inform.
6. In a pneumatic chuck, in combination, a piston and piston-rod in operative relation therewith, a chuck-head secured to the free end of said piston-rod, three equiangularlydisposed hub-gripping arms pivotally mounted on said chuck-head, said arms being provided with hub-engaging set-screws at their' upper ends and with sleeve-engaging rollers on their lower ends, and a conical sleeve for actuating said hub-gripping arms, said sleeve being rotatably mounted on said piston-rod and xed with respect to longitudinal movement in relation to said cylinder.
7. ln a pneumatic chuck, in combination, a cylinder pivotally mounted at its base, means for adjusting the inclination of the vertical aXis of the cylinder, a piston and piston-rod in operative relation with said cylinder, a chuck-head secured to the free end of said piston-rod, hub-gripping arms pivotally mounted on said chuck-head, and means for actuating the said hub-gripping arms.
