BEDSTEAD-FASTENING. j
Specification of Letters Patent No. 8,076, dated May 6, 1851.
To all whom t may concern," j Be it known Vthat we, JAMES R. Kam` and SPENCER LEWIS, of Tiiiin, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio,- have invented i certain new and useful Improvements in Bedstead-Fastenings; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full and clear description of the construction thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part ofthis speciiication.

Fig. 3 is a section of the post, showing an end` view of the divided box, with its wedge shaped wings. The nature of our invention and improvements consists in providing the upper section or part of the cylindrical box with two parallel wedge shaped wings and a triangu lar'projection, on its periphery in such a manner that the triangular projection shall open a way or groove on its entrance into the'post, which shall be closed by the wedge Shaped wings which are made to follow` while the upper section of the box is being driven to its place in the bore ofthe post,- and `thus crowd the wood in front of the end of the triangular projection and form a complete lock to the cylindrical box, and prevent the possibility of its drawing out when once secured without tearing the wood with it.
My improvement also consists in dividing the cylindrical box longitudinally into two equal part-s or sections, in such a manner that the upper section or part shallbe made to serve the purpose of a wedge for forcing the teeth projectingfrom the periphery of the lower section into the post.
My improvements further relate `to the employment of parallel wedge shaped wings and triangular projections on opposing sides of the shank of the rail for the `purposeof locking the same when driven for holding it securely.

E E are two parallel wedge shaped wings projecting about a quarter of an inch from the periphery and extending from the front edge of the section B, to the shoulder (a) of the triangular projection D leaving a space between their adjacent sides equal to the thickness of said triangular projection,
and having their upper edges made sharp for passing into the wood and are for the purposeof crowding the wood between their adjacent sides which has the effect of closing the way, or groove previously made by the entrance of the triangular projection D and thus `crowd the wood close against the shoulder (a) and forming a firm lock thereto.
F is the lower section or part of the cylindrical box, provided with an inclined plane (o) on its inner periphery for drawing the shank of the rail inward in connection` with the inclined plane of the upper section B,`to form a tight joint,-and also provided with a series of teeth (c c). `The inclined planes G, b, do not extend the full semi-diameter of the sections B, F, but leave spaces between their ends for the entrance of the shoulders or knobs (d) `on the end of the shank.
The cylindrical box is divided longitudinally into two equal parts or sections B, F, the line of division inclining upward at an angle of aboutlO degrees from a horizontal plane, so that in driving the upper section `B into the bore of the post its edges `will be made to act as wedges on the edges of the lower section` F, and force its projecting teeth (c) into the wood and serve as awedge to hold it. j `Gr@` is a section of the rail.

'Ihe end of the rail is also bored and the shank H inserted and driven therein till the ends of the parallel wedge shaped wings I, I, are ush with the face' of the shoulder of the rail.
Having thus described our improvements on the bedstead fastening, what we claim therein as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. Providing the upper section or part B l of thev cylindrical box with a triangular and -tw-o parallel wedge shaped wings D, E E, IInade sharp and projecting from its periphery insuch a nianner that the triangular projection D, shall open a groove or way in the post which shall be closed by the entrance of the parallel wedge shaped wings E, E, which follow, as the section B is driven into the post,-and thus crowd the wood in front of the shoulder (a.) of the triangular projection D, and for a complete lock thereto, as described.
2. IVe also claim dividing the cylindrical box longitudinally into two equal parts or sections B-F, t-he line of division inclining upward at an angle of about 10 degreesy from a horizontal plane,by which the edges of the upper section B are made to serve the purpose of wedges for forcing the teeth of the lower section F, into the post and holding it securely as described. i
