To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH Soss, a citizen of the United States, residingI at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to invisible hinges for doors, gates, sashes, the lids and covers of boxes, cabinets, and the like, such as are shown and described in an application for Letters Patent of the United States filed by me February 16, 1905, Serial No. 245,809, and in United States Letters Patent granted to me December 8, 1903, No. 746,898; and the object of the invention is to provide means whereby a door or similar article provided with hinges of this class may be detached or disconnected from the frame or other holder with which it is connected without detaehing the separate parts of the hinge.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a hinge composed of two parts made according to this invention; Fig. 2, a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. a, a front view of a hinge composed of three parts and provided with my improvement and showing the hinge closed, and Fig. 5, a back view of the hinge shown in Fig. I and showing the hinge open.
In the practice of my invention, as shown in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, I provide a hinge composed of two parts consisting of plates t and adapted, respectively, when the hinge is used as a door-hinge to be secured to the frame of the door and to the door, and in practice said plates are countersunk in the frame and door. The plates a and as in the application for United States patent hereinbefore referred to, are provided in their corresponding sides with oblong rectangular recesses e2 and b2, at the inner sides of which said plates are provided with inwardly-directed supplemental plates or members a3 and 3, which are segmental in cross-section and rectangular in form, and the plate or member b3 is provided at the top thereof with an outwardly-set segmental flange 51, forming a corresponding inner segmental groove b5 on the inner side of the plate b3, while at the bottom of said plate Z13 is an outwardly-set segmental iiange o", forming a segmental keeper 67 between said flange Z1 and the plate 3 and on the outer side of said plate. The segmental plate af is provided at its upper end with an inwardly-set segmental flange e, forming a segmental keeper a5, adapted to receive the flange 7)* o't' the plate 223, and the segmental plate e is provided at its lower end with an inwardly-set segmental flange a7,adapted to enter the groove or keeper bl. In assembling the parts of this hinge the segmental plates, parts, or members a3 and 3 are slipped together, or the part, plate, or member t3 is dropped onto the part, plate, or member b3 and a screw or screws :u are passed through the part, plate, or member e3 beneath the shoulder formed by the liange i of the part, plate, or member L3, as clearly shown in Fig. 2', and this prevents the separation of said parts by moving one vertically on the other, while permitting them to slide freely one upon the other. It is necessary also to provide means whereby these parts cannot loe separated laterally in the operation of the hinge, and said parts @il and 3 are provided, respectively, and near their free edges with an inwardly-directed lug or projection as and an outwardly-directed lug or projection for this purpose, and these lugs or projections, as will be understood, prevent the separation of the parts t3 and 723 in the opening and closing of the door or other device.
If thehinge is intended forvery light work, as when used in connection with small boxes, cabinets, or the like, the hinge is made by stamping the same from sheet metal and the lugs or projections as and s are formed by means of a punch or similar device; but if the hinge is intended for heavy work, as in the case of ordinary doors, the lugs or projections as and bs may be formed in the process of casting or they may be formed by passing screws or similar devices through the parts c3 and b3.
In Figs. 4L and 5 I have showna hinge of the class specified provided with my improvement and composed of three parts and similar to the hinge shown in the United States patent hereinbefore referred to. This hinge roo' IIO
ports the door. The word door as here used is intended to designate any swinging or movable part, and -the word frame to designate any stationary part. The part c consists of an oblong plate c2, provided at one side with a transversely-arranged oblong member c3, which is plano-convex in crosssection and the fiat or plane face thereof being at right angles to the plane of said plate and flush with one edge thereof, and at the back or convex side of the member c3 is an open space cf, which extends the full length of said member, and at the ends of said member c3 the back or convex side Jthereof is provided with segmental flanges c", forming segmental grooves or keepers c. The part (Z consists of the plate (Z2, one edge of which is provided with an oblongopen space (Z3, at the back of which is a member or plate (Z f, which is segmental in cross-section, and the upper e'nd of the plate or member (Zi is provided with an inwardly-set segmental flange d", forming a segmental groove or keeper (Z on the inner side of the plate or member (Z4, and said plate or member (Zi is provided at its lower end with an inwardly-set flange (Z ,forming a segmental rabbet-groove (Z son the outer side of said Harige. The parte of the hinge consists of a plate which is segmental in cross-section and provided at the'upper end with a thickened member e2, having a segmental groove or keeper e3, and at its lower end with an inwardly-set segmental flange e4, forming a segmental groove or 'keeper e", and with an outwardly-set annular flange or rim e6, forming a segmentalgroove or keeper e. The groove or keeper c" opens downwardly, and the groove or keeper e7 opens upwardly, and the groove or keeper e5 is adapted to receive the flange c5 on the part c of the hinge and the groove or keeper el to receive the flange or rim (Z7 on the part (Z of the hinge, while the groove or keeper e3 inthe top of the part e of the hinge receives the top liange c5 of the part c and (Z of the part (Z.
As thus constructed it will be seen that in assembling the separate parts of the hinge the part e is slipped into or onto the part or member c3 of the plate or part c of the hinge, and the part or plate (Zi of the part (Z is dropped into position on the part e, and in practice after the parts are thus connected a screw or screws y are passed through the top portion of the part (Zat inwardly beneath the annular shoulder at the top of the part e formed by the enlarged segmental head (/2, as clearly shown in Fig. 4t, and these screws hold the parts of the hinge together and prevent any vertical movement of the part (Z on the part e; but whenever it becomes necessary to `detach the door for any reason all that is necessary is to remove the sere-w or screws y and lift the door off of the other parts of the hinge, the part (Z of the hinge remaining secured to the door.
In practice the separate parts of the hinge, or the segmental members thereof, are provided with interoperating lugs or projections which prevent the separation of said parts in the operation of the hinge, as clearly shown and described in the United States Letters Patent hereinbefore referred to; but said lugs or projections, which are clearly shown and described in said Letters Patent, form no part of this invention and are therefore not shown or described herein, and the diiference between the construction of the hinge shown in Figs. t and and that shown in the United States Letters Patent hereinbefore referred to relate only to the bottom of the part e and the bottom of the part (Z1 and to the screw or screws y, whereby the part (Z of the hinge may be lifted off of the part e and the door thus removed from the frame without detaching the hinge from the door and the frame.
In the construction shown and described in Figs. l to 3, inclusive, it will be observed that the outwardly-set segmental flange Z6 at the bottom of the part Z3 is formed on a circle of greater diameter than the outwardly-set flange or rim Z2* at the top of said part Z3, and the groove b5 at the top of the part Z3 is therefore formed on a circle of less diameter than the groove or keeper Z7 at the bottom of the part Z3, and the same idea is involved in the construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the iange e2 at the top of the part c being formed on a circle of less diameter-than the flange e at the bottom of said part, while the groove or keeper e3 in the top of the part e is formed on a circle of less diameter than the groove or keeper e7 in the bottom, of said part, and this construction enables the separate parts of the hinges to be properly fitted and also enables them to move easily and freely one upon another. In practice the part c3 is provided on its convex side and at one edge thereof with a lug or projection c7, which operates in connection with a correspondinglug or projection es on the concave side of the part e, at one edge thereof, to prevent the separation of said parts in the operation of the hinge, and the part (Z 'l is provided on its concave side and at one edge thereof with a lug or projection (Z 9, which operates in connection with a corresponding lug or projection e9 on the convex side of the part e and at one edge thereof and which prevents the separation of said parts in the operation of the hinge, all these features of construction being similar to those described and claimed in the United States Patent hereinbefore referred to. It will also be observed that the flanges Z4 and Z6 at the top and bottom of the part b3 in the construction shown in Figs. l to 3 are upwardly-directed flanges, and the flanges e2 and e at the top and bottom of the part c in the construction shown in Figs. t and 5 are also upwardly-directed lianges, while the flanges at the top and bottom of the part ((3 in the construction IOO IIO
shown in Figs. l to 3, inclusive, are downwardly-directed flanges, as are also the flanges at the top and bottom of the part CZ" in the construction shown in Figs. t and 5, and Without this arrangement or construction the separate parts of the hinge could not be connected and disconnected, as hereinbefore described.
My invention is not limited, however, to the exact form of invisible hinges herein shown and described, and various changes in and modifications of the parts of the hinge by which said parts may be connected and disconnected may be made Without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A hinge, comprising' a plurality of segmental members movable one upon another, one of said members being provided at one end thereofl with an outwardly-set llange forming a segmental groove and at the other end thereof with an outvvardly-setflange forming a segmental keeper, the last-named llange and keeper being formed on a circle of greater diameter than the first-named flange and groove; and another of said parts being provided at one end with an inwardly-set flange forming a segmental keeper adapted to receive the first-named flange of the first-named part and at the other end thereof with an inwardly-set segmental flange adapted to enter the keeper of the first-named part, said parts being' adapted to be connected by moving one longitudinally of the other, substantially as shown and described.
2, A hinge, comprising a plurality of segmental members movable one upon another, one of said members being provided at the top thereof with an outwardly-set flange forming a segmental groove and at the bottom thereof with an outwardly-set flange forming a segmental groove or keeper, the flange and groove or keeper at the bottom of said member being formed on a circle of greater diameter than the flange and groove at the top of said member; and another of said parts being provided with an inwardly-set and downwardly-directed segmental flange or rim forming a segmental keeper adapted to receive the flange or rim at the top of the first-named part and at the bottom thereof with an inwardly-set and downwardly-directed segmental flange or rim adapted to enter the groove or keeper at the bottom of the said first-named part, substantially as shown and described.
3. A hinge, comprising a plurality of segmental members movable one upon another, one of said members being provided at the top thereof with an outwardly-set flange forming a segmental groove and at the bottom thereof with an outwardly-set flange forming a segmental groove or keeper, the flange and groove or keeper at the bottom of said member being formed on a circle of greater diameter than the flange and groove at the top of said member; and another of said parts being provided with an inwardly-set and downwardly-directed segmental flange or rim forming a segmental keeper adapted to receive the flange or rim at the top of the first-named part and at the bottom thereof with an inwardly-set and downwardly-directed segmental flange or rim adapted to enter the groove or keeper at the bottom of the said firstnamed part, and means to prevent the vertical movement cf said parts one upon another, substantially as shown and described.
