GARMENT-SUPPORTIEJR.
Patented Nov. 14, 1905.
Application filed April 24, 1905. Serial No. 257,083.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. SonLoss, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, in the borough of Manhattan and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Supporters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to stays or supporters for garments, and has special. reference to devices for stiffening or supporting ladies collars and neckwear. Owing to the lacy or light construction in which ladies collars are often made up it is desirable to introduce a device of some character to hold them in shape. Whalebone, feather-bone, celluloid, and other elastic material have been used heretofore for this purpose, the same having been inclosed in a suitable textile cover; but so far as known to me all such devices have been objectionable in the fact that the ends of the elastic material wear through the cover and scratch the neck or disarrange and tear the collar itself. The object of the present invention is to avoid this disadvantage and at the same time provide a supporter that can readily be attached to the collar, that will be delicate in construction, and but little observable when applied to the garment.
To this end the invention consists of a supporter or stiffener made of suitable material, such as .tough paper or celluloid, in the form of a closed loop having two parallel sides and rounded ends, the material thus formed being covered by a wrapping of silk floss or other light-strand material.
The device is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan of the supporter before it is covered. Fig. 2 is a plan of the supporter after it is covered; and Fig. 3 is a view of a portion of a ladys collar, showing the supporter in place.
The core or body of the supporter is indicated by a and may be stamped or otherwise formed out of stiff tough paper or of celluloid, thin steel, or other suitable material. It
has the shape of a closed loop having two long sides or members parallel and connected together at their extremities by curved ends I), which merge into said side members and have a section uniform therewith. This core or body is covered by Wrapping its members with silk or other soft floss, which may have any color to correspond with the garment in which it is to be used. This covering is applied by means of a needle passed successively through the opening in the loop, so as to wind the material individually upon the members thereof, as shown in Fig. 2.
In applying this device to a ladys collar it is set vertically on the inside of the same at such points'as the stiffening will be most effective, and it is sewed in place by a few stitches passing around the members of the loop in about the same way that the floss covering is applied. The round ends of the stiffener have no tendency to cut through the cover and are not in any way uncomfortable to the person wearing the device.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. A ladys collar supporter or stiffener adapted to support bands of lace and similar fabrics in yielding but resilient relation, comprising a core or body of slightly flexible or resilient sheet material in the form of a closed loop having two long parallel side members connected together at their extremities by rounded portions integral with said side members and merging intothe same so as to present throughout their length a section uniform with that of the side members, and a cover of stranded material applied individually to the members of the loop so as to extend over the end portions and completely cover the same.
2. A ladys collar supporter or stiffener adapted to support bands of lace and similar fabrics in yielding but resilient relation, comprising a core or body of slightly resilient or flexible material in the form of a closed loop having two long sides or members connected together by rounded end portions integral therewith which merge into the side members and. have a section uniform therewith, the said members being individually covered by stranded material spirally wound upon the same, and extending around the rounded end portions thereof, so as to completely inclose said body.
In witness whereof I subscribe my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
