TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Beit known that I, .OHN UMBACII, of the cityof Kankakee, in the county of Kankakee, in the State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Method of-Constructing Back-Pads to Harness; and Ldo hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the gur'es of'ireference marked thereon. t

The nature of my invention consists in the construction of back-pads to harness, in such a manner as to admit of the filling/being introduced before the pad is stitched, to accomplislrwhich the pocket or under side of ,the pad which contains the filling is first pressed bymeans of blocks to the required shape. This .pocket so formed is then placed in a metal or wooden cup, shaped and formed similar to it. The filling is then evenly placed in, after which the top part of thepad is placed over, and with a strap or elastic bandito hold thein all firmly together, it is ready for placing in the clamps to hc stitched.

Toenable others skilled in the art-to make and use my invention, reference is had to the annexed drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figurel is a plain view of the cup.

Figure 2 is a transverse section of the cup.

Figure 3 is a plain view of the one side'to an ordinary back-pad, sh the pocket or cushion.

Figure 4 is a'plain view of a pad, the same as shown in g. V3, except a portion ofthe upper surface is broken away, showing the under part of the pad which forms the pocket or cushion to contain the filling,

Figurel is a cross-section of the cup, as shown in g. 1, and also a cross-section of the pad, as shown in iig. 3, as contained in it during the process of stitching.

Figures 8 and 9 represent the convex and concave surfaces of the' form-blocks uscdfor pressing the, pocket to its required shape, so as to form the under side of a back-pad.

Figure 7 represents a cross-section, showing the concave surface in the block represented by fig. 8.

And a description of its construction and operation is asfollows Ivconstruct my back-pad in the usualv form of` the tree-back pad, but in order to obviate the necessity of first basting theY pocket or cushion part of the pad to the upper part of the same, andalso to dispense with the necessity of putting the filling ofthe cushion in after one end and two sides of the pocket are stitched or closed up by the use'of a remmer, and to make a durable and perfectly evencushion to back-band, I put the leather for the under part of the pad into the press or tree, as shown by blocks represented by figs 8 and 9 in the accompanying drawings, iig. 8 representing the concave andig. 9 the convex part of the press, as indicated by figs. 6A and 7, being,transverse sections of figs. 8 and 9 respectively. The material being pressed between these convex and concave blocks suiiicently to retain this concavo-convex form, is then placed in the mould or cup, as shown by {igsul and :2, the convex surface of the pressed material is placed in the concave or cup of mould and the filling for cushion or pad is evenly distriblit-ed in the conoavity of this pressed material as required, and the upper part of the back-pad is then put on the opening ofthe c'up containing thepresscd outer material for cushion, and the filling of cushion as represented by` drawings marked 8 and 4, and there secured by leather or rubber bands ready for placing in the clamps to be stitched; the moulding or cup over the cushion of the under side of the pad preventing any disturbancesof the filling in the process of stitching, as represented in cross-section marked 5 on said drawings. v

What l claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The use and application of the moulding or cup, in the filling and stitc owing its upper surface as stitched to the back-pad to harness.
