Description

No. 804,008. PATENTED NOV. 7, 1905. J. R. HOPKINS.
. COMBINED WRENCH AND SPANNER.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 13, 1905.
UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIoE.
COMBINED WRENCH AND SPANNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. *7, 1905.
Application filed May 13, 1905. Serial No. 260.239.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES R. HOPKINS, of Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Wrench and Spanner, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combination-tool for use by firemen, including a spanner adapted for use in operating hose-couplings and a wrench adapted to operate a hydrant-nut.
The invention has for its object to provide a simple, durable, and effective combinationtool of this character; and it consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim;
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a combination-tool embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents an edge view showing the same partially in section and engaged with a hydrant-nut. Fig. 3 represents a top View, a part of the tool being shown in section.
The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
In the drawings, (0 represents a head, which may be of cast metal or otherwise formed, said head being provided with a polygonal cavity 6, adapted to engage a hydrant-nut n. The head is provided at one side of the cavity I; with an enlargement 0, that enlargement having a segmental face 0, which forms the wall of a slot or opening 0 the ends of which are adapted to engage projections on a hose-coupling, the face 0 being curved to conform to the periphery of the said coupling. The enlargement 0 is preferably cast in skeleton form, as represented in the'drawings. The head a is provided at the opposite side of the cavity 6 with a shankd, provided with an internallyscrew-threaded orifice extending from the outer end of the shank to the cavity 6.
6 represents ahandle provided at one of its end portions with an external screw-thread adapted to engage the internal thread of the shank d. The handle is adapted to be screwed into the shank until its inner end projects far enough into the cavity 6 to come to a bearing on the nut n, as shown in Fig. 2.
It will be seen that the described tool is adapted to be used either as a spanner or as a wrench. When the tool is used as a wrench, the handle 6 may be unscrewed or retracted sufficiently to enable the nut to freely enter the cavity 6, and may then be screwed into the cavity sufiiciently to firmly engage the tool with the nut.
It will be observed that the internallythreaded opening in which the handle 6 fits leads from one of the flat sides of the nut-receiving cavity, and two other flat sides of said cavity meet at a point opposite the inner end of said handle. Therefore when the handle 6 is screwed down upon a nut the said nut will becrowded or wedged into the apex of the two flat faces which are opposite the inner end of said handle. Moreover, since the handle and the nut-receiving cavity and the spanner are all in alinement, the tool may be just as conveniently operated one way as the other, by means of the one handle, whether a nut is being tightened or loosened or a hose-coupling being operated upon.
- I claim A tool of the character stated, comprising a head having an angular nut-receiving cavity, and having an internally-threaded opening leading from one of the flat sides of the said cavity, two other fiat sides of the cavity meeting at a point opposite said threaded opening, the head having also an enlargement formed with a segmental outer face constituting a spanner, and a handle having a threaded portion fitting the internally-threaded opening of the head and having its inner end formed as a nut-grasping jaw adapted to crowd or wedge an angle of a nut into the apex of the two fiat sides of the cavity which are opposite said jaw, the said handle and the nut-cavity and spanner of the head being in alinement, whereby the tool may be employed with equal facility for exerting leverage in either direction, on either a nut or hose-coupling.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES R. HOPKINS. Witnesses:
O. F. BROWN, E. BATCHELDER.
