Description
A. GARMAN.
Plow-Clevis.
Paten ted June 20', 1838.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARON OARMAN, OF COLUMBUS, NEW JERSEY.
IM PROVEMENT IN PLOW-CLEVISES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 791, dated June 20, 1838.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARON CARMAN, of Golumbus, in the county of Burlington and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Flows and Olevises; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description.
Thenatureot'myinvention and improvement in the plow consists of a floor or projecting supporter and tapering flange, A, for the selfsharpening point B, which is cast solid with sheth E and the mold-board.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction. I a
I construct my plow in any of the known forms, except the front part, which is constructed in the following manner- The floor A, supporting the point B, is set in a sloping form toward the point and rising about three inches in the rear, with a tapering flange nuderneath, which is cast solid with the floor A, sheth E, and the mold-board. An opening is made as wide as the point B, so as to admit of the point B to slide on the floor A back between the sheth E and the mold-board, which is closed up with the point B and the colter above when screwed down, with the bolt passing through all three, the sheth E passing up through the beam.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The floor with a tapering flange underneath as a supporter for the self-sharpening point, and the manner of uniting the same to the plow, as herein described.
The nature of my invention and improvement on the clevis consists in an upright piece, L, attached to the front and upper corner of the clevis F, and also the tongue N, with double horizontal swivels J K and the iron brace T.
I construct my clevis in any of the known forms. The improvement consists in attaching an upright piece, L, to the front and upper corner and rising above the clevis, so as to admit of one or more square openings to receive a piece of iron, called a tongue, N. The tongue is of a sufficient length so as to extend back a J K, to which is attached an iron brace, T,
sloping at each end and rising in the center, with bolt-holes, to be fastened to the Whittletree I, and extends sufficiently forward so as to come directly over the whiffletree I when attached to the plow in the usual mode for drat't by the ring G, and by means of the holes H can be regulated to suit the size of the ring Gr, connected with the clevis F; and the horizontal swivel J, which is immediately in front of the upright piece L in clevis F, will admit of the plow-beam being varied to or from land at. pleasure; and the iron brace T, attached to the whiffletree I by a bolt or screw at each end and received in the center by the horizontal swivel K, admits of the ends of the whiffletree being varied backward or forward, according to the motion of the horses, and when the whiffletree is leveled by draft the plow by this improvement will always be brought in an erect position.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The upright piece L, attached to and rising above the front and upper'corner of the clevis F, with one or more square openings to receive a tongue, N.
2. The tongue N, with double horizontal swivels J K.
3. The iron brace 'l, as hereinfnlly described.
For a more exact description of thesaid plow and clevis reference may behad to the drawings.
ARON OARMAN.
