APPARATUS FOR MEGHANIGALLY CHALKING BILLIARD CUES AND THE LIKE.

CLAUDE ISAAC MIUHAELSON, OF EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND.
APPARATUS FOR MECHANICALLY CHALKING BlLLlARD-CUES AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 5, 1905.
Application filed n ary 29, 1904. Serial No. 191,240-
To lb whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLAUDE Isaac MIeIIA EL- SON, manufacturers agent, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 3% North Bridge, (Scotsman Buildings) Edinburgh, in the county of Edinburgh, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Mechanically Chalking Billiard-Cues and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
M y invention relates to devices for mechanically chalking billiard-cues and the like.
According-to the said invention I employ any convenient form of electric motor, on the armature-shaft of which I secure a clip or other means for holding the chalk. The circuit of the motor is adapted to be closed by means of contacts, which are so arranged that they will be actuated during the act of but prior to bringing the one against the chalk, so as to insure that the chalk shall have commenced revolving before the cue touches the same. In order to prevent the stopping of the motor through excess of pressure from the one on the chalk, I provide means, such as a hardened point of steel or other suitable metal, for the armature-spindle of the motor to bear against while rotating. The said point may be formed by an adjustable screw set in a bracket carried on the motor-bed.
In order that my invention may be better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same more fully, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a front elevation of my device inclosed in a box and showing the lid thereof open, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same with the box closed.
A is the box.
B is the field-magnet of the electric motor, and C the armature thereof. U is the armature spindle or shaft, and C the hardened point of steel or other material against which said said armature-spindle C bears.
(J is the bracket carrying the point C.
I) is the chalk-holder, and E the chalk.
A A are the terminals to which the batteries or other sources of electric supply are connected.
F F are movable contacts and H H fixed contacts adapted to be actuated by the cue as it enters the aperture or hole Kin the box A. The movable contacts F F are composed of brass or other suitable resilient material which will enable them to normally lie out of contact with the fixed contacts H Hand to assume such a position relatively to each other that the space between them is less than the diameter of the cue, so that said one in being introduced into the box will force the movable contacts apart and bring them against the fixed contacts H H, thereby closing the circuit and starting the motor. By this arrangement the chalk will be set revolving before the cue touches it. As soon as the cue is withdrawn from the box the electric circuit is broken automatically by the natural resiliency of the movable contacts causing them to assume their normal position and the chalk and the motor then cease to rotate.
The box or case may also be suspended on pivots in a bracket, so that it may be moved through any angle.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a cue-chalking apparatus, the combination of an electric motor, a chalk-holder actuated thereby, resilient electric contacts located in front of the chalk-holder and between which the one must pass and with their members narrower apart than the diameter of the cue, and fixed electric contacts with which said resilient contacts cooperate to complete the electric circuit through the motor substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. .In a cue-chalking apparatus, the combination of an electric motor, a chalk-holder carried at one end of the armature-spindle and actuated thereby, means at the opposite end of said spindle for receiving the end thrust exerted thereon by the pressure of the cue on the chalk, and resilient electric contacts located in front of the chalk-holder and between which the cue must pass and with their members narrower apart than the diameter of the cue, and fixed electric contacts with which said resilient contacts cooperate to complete the electric circuit through the motor substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a cue-chalking apparatus, the combination of an electric motor, a chalk-holder carried at one end of the armaturespindle and actuated thereby, an adjustable thumb-screw at the opposite end of said spindle for receiving the end thrust exerted thereon by the pressure of the cue on the chalk, resilient electric contacts located in front of the chalk-holder and between which the cue must pass and the motor substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand, in presence of two subscribing Wit- 'nesses, this 12th day of January, 1904.
