Description

PATENTED AUG. a, 1905 L. F. EARL.
YARN REEL.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 3,1904.
IINITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS F. EARL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO PALMA MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
YARN-REEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 8, 1905.
Application filed February 8, 1904. Serial No. 192,482.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS F. EARL, a citizen of the United States,'residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Yarn-Reels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in yarn-reels.
It consists in improved means for supporting the hank of yarn adjustably and for permitting the removal of the yarn readily therefrom.
The further objects of and advantages obtained from my invention will appear in the description of the device and in the claims.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my device. Fig. 2 represents a section upon the line :0 m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a modification of my device, shown in elevation and partly in section, where a block is substituted for the plate shown in Fig. 1 as holding the inner ends of the yarn-holding arms. Fig. 4 represents a portion of a section of Fig. 3,
taken upon line y y.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in thefigures.
Referring to the drawings, my device consists of a stand 1, which is secured to a table or other convenient flat support by spring-- clamp 2. Upon the top and approximately at the center of said stand 1 is rotatably secured, by means of screw 3,the plate or support 1, which is here shown in the forrri of a cross having arms 5 5, whose sides 6 are turned upwardly and inwardly to form guides 7. Within these guides are sprung the inner U-shaped ends 8 of yarn-supporting arms 9, which ends 8 are slightly larger than the guides and terminate in stops 10, so that they may be sprung therein, but not pass therethrough, holding the arms securely in place.
The arms constituting the reel are shown four in number; but it will be evident that any other number greater than one will fulfil the requirements. The outer ends of these arms are formed into hooks 11, within which lie the hank of yarn in place. The arms are formed of suitable length to accommodate the sizes of hank desired, but can be extended by partially withdrawing the inner ends from their guides, and are provided intermediate their length with the spiral portions 12, which permit the arms to be sprung upwardly and inwardly to accommodate varying sizes of hank and after the yarn has been placed thereon keep the bank taut.
In the modification shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the block 13, having openings 1A, takes the place of the plate 4. Within these openings 14 are placed diaphragms 15, which prevent side movement of the U-shaped inner ends of the yarn-supporting arms. The block is pivoted upon pin 16, whose upper end bears against plate 17, held to the block in any suitable manner, as by pins 18.
It will be noted that in the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the U-shaped inner ends of the arms are in the same plane as the hooks l1 and springs 12, instead of at right angles thereto, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
In operation the device is clamped upon any suitable flat support and the hank is placed upon the hooks the arms being sprung upwardly and inwardlyas much as may be necessary. When released, the arms spring out and hold the hank under a tension which is approximately the same whatever the size of the hank. The yarn may be freely wound from the reel, which revolves freely as the yarn is drawn from it.
It will be evident that various changes may be made by those skilled in the art which will come within the scope of my invention, and I do not, therefore, desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a yarn-supporting reel, a stand, a part rotatable thereon, extensible yarn-supporting arms removably secured in said part and means intermediate the ends of said arms permitting them to be moved angularly to their length.
2. In a yarn-supporting reel, a stand, means for securing said stand to a piece of furniture, a support adapted to revolve upon said stand, yarn-holders secured within said support but removable longitudinally and means intermediate the ends of said yarn-holders for permitting their movement angularly to their length.
3. In a yarn-supporting reel, a stand, arevoluble support thereupon, arms adjustably secu red Within said support and integral springs intermediate the ends of said arms.
4. In a yarn-supporting reel, a stand, a support secured upon saidstand and removable adjustable yarn-supporting arms adapted for connection With said support, said arms being formed into a spring intermediate their ends.
5. In a reel, yarn-supporting arms removable longitudinally and having integral springs intermediate their ends.
6. In a reel, a yarn-supporting arm having elastic means of attachment at one end, a spring intermediate its length and a hook at the other end.
7. In a reel, a yarn-supporting arm insertible and removable longitudinally and integral
